Yukon Boy Battles Rare Form Of Muscular Dystrophy

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2014

YUKON, Oklahoma - A Yukon family is shaken after learning their active teenage boy is battling one of the rarest forms of Muscular Dystrophy. The teen used to be a standout athlete, but now, he can barely stand up. Scotty Wooten has one of the only known cases of FSHD Muscular Dystrophy in Oklahoma. It weakens muscles in his face, arms and shoulder blades and has dramatically changed his life. Like any other 16-year-old boy, Scotty loves to play video games, but in the last two years, since he was diagnosed with the very rare Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, Scotty is forced to sit out. "I missed out on a lot of gym classes, which were pretty fun, because you usually get to play dodge ball," Scotty said. Scotty moves slower, gets tired faster, had to transfer to Yukon Alternative High School and can no longer play on a sports team like he used to. "Really liked sports, mostly baseball, enjoyed playing catcher," Scotty said. Scottys mother says it hurts to watch her son battle the disease. "Physically, Ive seen a lot of changes," explained Emily Wooten, Scotty's mother. "Scotty doesn't walk flatfooted like a normal person any longer. He walks … Continue reading

Neck manipulation linked to stroke

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2014

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. The American Heart and Stroke Associations have issued a new statement about neck manipulation, a treatment done by chiropractors and some other health care providers. The groups say manipulation may be associated with stroke. Earlier this year, FOX 4 introduced you to Genny Hale who had a stroke a day after having her neck adjusted. She went to the emergency room with sudden arm numbness and dizziness. Thats one of the first questions they ask, if I had ever seen a chiropractor, said Hale. Dr. Karin Olds is a neurologist at Saint Lukes Neuroscience Institute. Yes, chiropractic manipulation of the neck can cause a stroke, said Dr. Olds. She told us that when the neck is torqued in any way, it can cause a tear or dissection in an artery wall. A clot forms which causes the stroke. Now the American Heart and Stroke Associations are weighing in, saying that neck manipulation may be associated with stroke although it cannot be said with certainty that it causes strokes. Theres no cause and effect thats with the chiropractic adjustment and stroke, said Dr. Kendall Payne, a chiropractor who is president of the Kansas Chiropractic Association. Dr. Payne said … Continue reading

Anthony L. Komaroff Universal Uclick DEAR DOCTOR K: I suffer from what my doctor calls chronic neuropathic pain. What are my treatmentoptions? DEAR READER: There are two main types of pain. Nociceptive pain results from an injury to tissues outside your nervous system. Burns, sprains and broken bones are all examples of nociceptive pain. Tiny nerve fibers are always present in tissues. When the tissue gets injured, the nerve fibers detect it. The signal they send the brain is nociceptive pain. The signal says to the brain: Do something to avoid furtherinjury! Ebola: We never had outbreaks in capital cities before

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2014

The atmosphere in Sierra Leone where the deadly ebola virus has so far claimed almost 300 lives is not so much one of panic as one of grave concern, according to Clare native and Concern worker, Fiona McLysaght. Ms McLysaght, who is Concern Worldwides head of operations in the stricken country, said while the news reports filtering out tended towards a doomsday scenario, the good news was there were survivors too. Since the first case was confirmed on May 26, we are now at 591 confirmed cases. Of that figure, 214 people have died [as of last Wednesday] but there are also patients who have recovered. In fact to date, 161 patients have recovered from a disease for which there is no vaccine, no treatment, and no cure, Ms McLysaght said. Those who recover are followed up for three months afterwards to make sure the virus is gone. Those with the best chance of recovery were patients who sought treatment early, she said. Sometimes they respond to symptomatic treatments, in other words they respond to treatment given to them for symptoms such as high temperature, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, and if they have a healthy immune system. So people do survive, … Continue reading

As genetic counseling grows, so do Iowas needs

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2014

By Chelsea Keenan, The Gazette About 30 college students gathered last week at the University of Iowa to ask questions about genomic medicine and learn more about the growing field of genetic counseling. I really just wanted to learn what a genetic counselor does and see if its something to consider, said Katie Knudtson, who will be a freshman at Iowa State University this fall. Genetic counselors educate patients about how their genes affect their health. The counselors specialize in certain areas, such as pediatric, cancer, prenatal or psychiatric. Its a good marriage between education and research, said Erin Davidson, an intern at the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics at the UI. Davidson, who studied biology at Colorado State University, is in the process of applying to graduate school. The research and technology is exploding, she said. I want to help people understand their options and what their tests mean. The Iowa Institute of Human Genetics promotes education, clinical care and research. The organization, which was created two years ago, develops new tests, such as how the body and its genetic makeup metabolize drugs, and works on integrating them into a clinical setting, said Colleen Campbell, a certified genetic counselor … Continue reading
