Nanomedicine Company MagForce Takes $15M From Thiels Mithril Capital

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2014

MagForce injects iron oxide nanoparticles into a patient and then vibrates them with a magnetic field to generate heat that helps kill cancer cells. It sounds like science fiction but its real. Thats why Peter Thiels late-stage investment firm Mithril Capital just led a $15 million investment into MagForces new American subsidary that values it at $65 million. Founded in 1997, MagForce is already listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange with $144 million market cap. The cash infusion will pay for the nanomedicine company to fund its development for use against more types of cancer, and the approval process in the United States. If MagForces NanoTherm treatment gets the greenlight in America, CEO Ben Lipps tells the company will IPO stateside. Heres a look at how the NanoTherm process works: Right now, the NanoTherm treatment is only available in Europe for fighting Glioblastoma brain tumors. A special coating devised by MagForce surrounds the iron oxide nanoparticles and prevents them from dispersing in the body when theyre injected into a tumor. The patient is then placed in a NanoActivator, which looks like an MRI machine. It emits a magnetic field and oscillates the polarity 100,000 times per second. The nanoparticles act … Continue reading

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2014

Beginning today, Menorah Medical Center and Shawnee Mission Medical Center have joined Saint Lukes Hospital's Cord Blood Program and now offer mothers the option to donate their newborn babys umbilical cord blood to help those in need of a stem cell transplant. According to a news release from Saint Luke's Hospital, umbilical cord blood, like bone marrow, is rich in hematopoietic stem cells, which create all of a persons blood cells. Cord blood cells can be used in the treatment of leukemia, sickle cell anemia and dozens of other diseases. Cord blood stem cells are collected after the birth of a healthy infant and pose no risk to the donating mother or baby. Through this partnership, our hospitals are helping increase the worlds supply of stem cell-rich umbilical cord blood and helping those who suffer from any one of 80 life-threatening diseases, said Bill Ward, director of the Cord Blood Program for Saint Lukes Hospital of Kansas City. Prior to today, the Cord Blood Program at Saint Lukes Hospital, the areas only free cord blood donation program, collected and processed donations from the four metro area Saint Lukes hospitals, as well as Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Scientists Inch Closer Toward Using Stem Cells for Spinal Injuries

Posted: Published on August 9th, 2014

By Amy Norton HealthDay Reporter THURSDAY, Aug. 7, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- In a step toward using stem cells to treat paralysis, scientists were able to use cells from an elderly man's skin to regrow nerve connections in rats with damaged spinal cords. Reporting in the Aug. 7 online issue of Neuron, researchers say the human stem cells triggered the growth of numerous axons -- the fibers that extend from the body of a neuron (nerve cell) to send electrical impulses to other cells. Some axons even reached the animals' brains, according to the team led by Dr. Mark Tuszynski, a professor of neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego. "This degree of growth in axons has not been appreciated before," Tuszynski said. But he cautioned that there is still much to be learned about how the new nerve fibers behave in laboratory animals. Tuszynski likened the potential for stem-cell-induced axon growth to nuclear fusion. If it's contained, you get energy; if it's not contained, you get an explosion. "Too much axon growth into the wrong places would be a bad thing," Tuszynski said. For years, researchers have studied the potential for stem cells to restore functioning nerve connections … Continue reading

The Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) had announced in June that it had agreed a criteria for treatment. It is currently the only place in the UK not to offer at least one cycle of IVF to childless couples who cannot conceive naturally. But this week the organisations governing body met and voted to defer offering a single cycle of IVF, as it cannot afford the cost. Dr Tim Hughes, from the CCG, said they had passed a motion to aspire to commission IVF in the future. He said: It is with a heavy heart that I announce the CCGs governing body has voted temporarily to defer the commissioning of IVF services in the Vale of York for 2014-15. There are approximately 110 couples in the area wanting IVF, but Dr Hughes said the service could cost as much as 2m a year to provide. The move has been criticised by campaigners, who say peoples … Continue reading
