Discredited Stem Cell Scientist Found Hanged

Posted: Published on August 5th, 2014

TOKYO, Japan - An eminent biologist linked to a discredited stem cell research project was found hanged at his workplace, police said Tuesday. The body of Yoshiki Sasai was discovered by security guards at the Riken Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe City, Japan, shortly before 9 a.m. local time (10 p.m. Monday ET). Several letters addressed to his colleagues were found tucked in his briefcase, broadcaster NHK reported. "It's very, very unfortunate," Riken's deputy director Shigekazu Saito told reporters. Sasai, 52, supervised a team of scientists, led by Haruko Obokata, that announced in the journal Nature in January that they had found a game-changing way to make stem cells using ordinary mouse cells. However, suspicions were raised over Obokatas research and she was accused of falsifying data. In June, Obokata agreed to retract her findings. Although the Riken Centers investigation cleared Sasai of wrongdoing, he was reprimanded for his failure to properly supervise Obokata's work. In April, he apologized for allowing an incident that might taint Japans reputation for scientific research. Japan scientist in discredited stem cell research commits suicide

Posted: Published on August 5th, 2014

Tokyo: A Japanese researcher at the centre of discredited research that was initially hailed as a potential breakthrough for stem cell treatment, killed himself after months of stress and exhaustion, officials said on Tuesday. Yoshiki Sasai, co-author of the high-profile research that had seemed to offer hope for replacing damaged cells or even growing new human organs, was found early on Tuesday at the Riken institute where he worked in Kobe, western Japan, police and the institute said. It is confirmed as a suicide, said a police spokesman. It was a hanging. Sasai, 52, had been hospitalised in March for stress and become less receptive to media inquiries during the controversy over the teams research, said Riken spokesman Satoru Kagaya. The scientist had seemed completely exhausted in their last phone conversation around May or June, Kagaya told a televised news conference. As deputy director of Rikens Centre for Developmental Biology, Sasai supervised the work of lead author Haruko Obokata, which took the world of molecular biology by storm when it was published in the British journal Nature in January. It was retracted after months of controversy that made front-page news in Japan and tarnished the countrys reputation for scientific research. … Continue reading

Scientist in Research Scandal Found Dead

Posted: Published on August 5th, 2014

A senior Japanese scientist embroiled in a stem-cell research scandal died Tuesday in an apparent suicide, police said. Yoshiki Sasai, who supervised and co-authored stem-cell research papers that had to be retracted due to falsified contents, was found suffering from cardiac arrest at the government-affiliated science institute RIKEN in Kobe, in western Japan, according to Hyogo prefectural police. Sasai, 52, was deputy chief of RIKEN's Center for Developmental Biology. A security guard found him with a rope around his neck, according to RIKEN. Sasai was rushed to a hospital, but was pronounced dead two hours later. Police and RIKEN said Sasai left what appeared to be suicide notes, but refused to disclose their contents. RIKEN spokesman Satoru Kagaya told a news conference that Sasai had three letters with him, each addressed to Haruko Obokata, a co-author of the research papers, as well as senior members of RIKEN and fellow researchers. Two other notes addressed to RIKEN officials were on Sasai's secretary's desk. Sasai's health had deteriorated over the past few months, and he had been receiving medical treatment. Kagaya said that Sasai started looking depressed in May, and that the two had hardly seen each other recently. "He seemed exhausted. … Continue reading

Most cosmetic procedures based on stem cells are bogus

Posted: Published on August 5th, 2014

MONDAY, Aug. 4, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Could stem cell injections help rejuvenate your face or body? Probably not, plastic surgery experts say, but ads for these types of bogus procedures abound on the Internet. "Stem cells offer tremendous potential, but the marketplace is saturated with unsubstantiated and sometimes fraudulent claims that may place patients at risk," a team led by Dr. Michael Longaker, of Stanford University Medical Center, wrote in a review published in the August issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The experts say consumers need to be wary of advertisements promoting the benefits of "minimally invasive, stem cell-based rejuvenation procedures." Claims for stem cell procedures for facelifts, breast augmentation and vaginal rejuvenation are not only unsubstantiated, but also risky, Longaker's team said. They note that, to date, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved only one cosmetic stem cell procedure designed to treat fine facial wrinkles. And since that single procedure was approved, the product involved has been monitored extensively. Overall, cosmetic stem cell procedures have not undergone significant scientific scrutiny, the Stanford team said. The risks associated with stem cell and tissue processing have not been closely examined. The effects of aging on stem cells … Continue reading

Gary V to undergo stem cell therapy

Gary Valenciano. File Photo. MANILA Veteran singer and concert performer Gary Valenciano is set to undergo a stem cell therapy so he could continue dancing. In an interview with entertainment site Push, Valenciano said the treatment is primarily for his knees. Kasi medyo masakit na talaga siya. I have hardly any cartilage left. Yung meniscus ko has multiple tears and it has been like this for years so Im going through a procedure na sana mag-regenerate yung cartilage ko, he said. Because of this, Valenciano said he will take a short break from his showbiz commitments. "Ill give myself a little time na mawala yung pain and then hataw ulit. Kasi hindi ko talaga mapigilan yung sarili ko eh. Even if sinasabi ko na sa sarili ko na Tama na, tama na hindi eh," he said. Valenciano, who just staged the repeat of his concert "Arise" at the SM Mall of Asia Arena last weekend, also explained why he no longer holds concerts as often as before. "I slowed down na kasi if you watched my past concerts yun yung talagang pure energy ang thrust ko eh. Yun ang ginawa ko ngayon, he said. Ayaw ko kasi yung manood yung … Continue reading

Researchers to track effects of revolutionary new medicines

Posted: Published on August 5th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 4-Aug-2014 Contact: Jamie Brown jamie.brown@liverpool.ac.uk 44-151-794-2248 University of Liverpool The University of Liverpool has been awarded 2 million to become a leading centre in the UK for tracking the fate in the body of materials used in breakthrough medicines. Researchers will be using radioactive labelling to find out where key materials used in nanomedicines go once the medicines have entered the body. Nanomedicines are a relatively new class of therapy which can deliver small quantities of a drug in a targeted way to the affected part of the body. Unlike traditional therapies, nanomedicines are formulated to use lower quantities, with the potential for cost savings, fewer side-effects and more rapid treatment of disease. Part of nanomedicine formulations involve the use of polymers or other materials which help the drug reach its target, but until now there has been little research into where the carrier materials accumulate, despite them often making up over half of the mass of the medicine. The Liverpool Radiomaterials Chemistry Laboratory at the University will 'tag' parts of the medicines by making some of them harmlessly radioactive and then monitor how they move around the body once drugs are administered. The process of making … Continue reading
