Doctor will discuss care, treatment of concussions

Posted: Published on August 4th, 2014

By ANDREW MARTINS Staff Writer FREEHOLD It can happen without warning. One instant, an athlete is playing his hardest, and the next moment, an injury leaves him laying on the field and disoriented. His vision becomes blurry, a sensation of nausea washes over him, and a pounding headache attacks his senses just some of the signs of a possible concussion. If left untreated, a concussion can cause lasting health issues or death and con- cussions happen to thousands of Americans every year. It can be catastrophic if the proper decisions are not made, and it is really important for parents and coaches to be educated on the signs and symptoms of concussions, said Dr. David Bertone, who operates ConcussionRXCare in Manalapan and Lincroft. Bertone and Jersey Shore University Medical Center Sports Medicine Director Dr. Stephen G. Rice will discuss head injuries and their occurrence in youth sports at iPlay America, 110 Schanck Road, Freehold Township, on Aug. 13. A lot of the youth sports leagues are not really being serviced like the high school and college [sports] are, and [youth sports] is where a lot of the injuries are occurring, Bertone said. We have been trying to educate the community … Continue reading

Some seizures mistaken for epilepsy may be linked to feelings of anxiety

Posted: Published on August 3rd, 2014

New research by clinical psychologists from the UK and US has revealed psychogenic seizures which could be mistaken for epilepsy are linked to feelings of anxiety. The team of researchers devised a new set of tests to determine whether there was a link between how people interpret and respond to anxiety, and incidents of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNESs) -- seizures that can be brought on by threatening situations, sensations, emotions, thoughts, or memories. Experts from the University of Lincoln, University of Nottingham, and University of Sheffield in the UK, with Arizona State University in the USA, used a series of questionnaires and computer tests to determine if a patient regularly avoids situations which might bring on anxiety. The tests correctly predicted whether a patient had epilepsy or PNESs in 83% of study participants. Such seizures appear on the surface to be similar to epileptic fits, which are caused by abnormal brain activity. Lead researcher Dr Lian Dimaro completed the study as part of her doctorate in Clinical Psychology on the Trent Doctorate in Clinical Psychology programme, which is jointly run by the University of Lincoln and University of Nottingham. "PNES can be a very disabling condition, and it is important … Continue reading

Thanks for the support, says Owen Williams ESPN Staff August 3, 2014 Owen Williams has posted an upbeat message of thanks to his supporters as he receives treatment for a serious spinal injury. The Wales and Cardiff Blues centre suffered a "significant injury" to his cervical vertebrae and spinal cord while playing in the World Club 10s in Singapore in June. News of his injury prompted an outpouring of support from players and fans across world rugby, with Twitter users posting under the hashtag #StayStrongForOws. Now Williams has posted a message on Twitter from his hospital bed, thanking the well-wishers and sharing a picture of himself with his dog Riley. Williams, who has four Wales caps, was injured playing for the Blues in the inaugural World Club 10s against the Asia Pacific Dragons. After undergoing treatment in Singapore, Williams was then flown to Wales and is now in Cardiff's Rookwood hospital. Williams signed for the Blues' senior side in 2010 after coming through the region's academy, but a hamstring problem restricted him to just nine starts last season. Mold forces relocation of Haley hospital patients

Posted: Published on August 3rd, 2014

TAMPA About a half dozen patients in the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital Spinal Cord Injury Center had to be moved and a hallway sealed off after mold was discovered in an area near the patient care section in May, hospital officials say. The mold was found during repairs after a pipe burst in March. As a precaution we relocated the patients until the work was complete and retests confirmed no microbial growth, said Kateriniea Littles, a Haley spokeswoman. The patients were moved for about three weeks, said Littles. The work on the first floor of the Spinal Cord Injury Center egan May 28 and is expected to wrap up in the middle of August, Littles said. The disruption led at least one patient to complain to Congress. Problems began March 21, Littles said, when a half-inch hot water line ruptured in the mechanical space of the new polytrauma center. The center was under construction at the time. The ruptured line cause water to flow into the first floor of the Spinal Cord Injury Center, Littles said, with most of the damage limited to sections of the first floor that contain the VA Internet Caf, office spaces, storage rooms, conference … Continue reading

Potential treatment, prevention of Parkinson's disease

Posted: Published on August 3rd, 2014

Parkinson's disease affects neurons in the Substantia nigra brain region -- their mitochondrial activity ceases and the cells die. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics show that supplying D-lactate or glycolate, two products of the gene DJ-1, can stop and even counteract this process: Adding the substances to cultured HeLa cells and to cells of the nematode C. elegans restored the activity of mitochondria and prevented the degeneration of neurons. They also showed that the two substances rescued the toxic effects of the weed killer Paraquat. Cells that had been treated with this herbicide, which is known to cause a Parkinson's like harm of mitochondria, recovered after the addition of the two substances. Both glycolic and D-lactic acids occur naturally in unripe fruits and certain kinds of yoghurt. Teymuras Kurzchalia and Tony Hyman both have labs at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics with rather different research programs -- but both happened to stumble upon the gene DJ-1 and joined forces. This gene, originally thought of as an oncogene, has been linked to Parkinson's disease since 2003. Recent studies showed that DJ-1 belongs to a novel glyxolase family. The major … Continue reading
