Early Stem Cell Transplant Vital in 'Bubble Boy' Disease

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2014

By Amy Norton HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, July 30, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Babies born with so-called "bubble boy" disease can often be cured with a stem cell transplant, regardless of the donor -- but early treatment is critical, a new study finds. Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), as the condition is medically known, actually refers to a group of rare genetic disorders that all but eliminate the immune system. That leaves children at high risk of severe infections. The term "bubble boy" became popular after a Texas boy with SCID lived in a plastic bubble to ward off infections. The boy, David Vetter, died in 1984 at the age of 12, after an unsuccessful bone marrow transplant -- an attempt to give him a functioning immune system. Today, children with SCID have a high chance of survival if they receive an early stem cell transplant, researchers report in the July 31 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. In the best-case scenario, a child would get stem cells -- the blood-forming cells within bone marrow -- from a sibling who is a perfect match for certain immune-system genes. But that's not always an option, partly because kids with SCID are … Continue reading

Effect of microenvironment modulation on stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury pain

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 31-Jul-2014 Contact: Meng Zhao eic@nrren.org 86-138-049-98773 Neural Regeneration Research Spinal cord injury (SCI) currently ranks second after mental retardation among neurological disorders in terms of cost to society. Pain is a debilitating consequence of SCI related to the nature of the lesion, neurological structures damaged, and secondary pathophysiological changes of surviving tissues1. Approximately two-thirds of persons who have sustained SCI experience clinically significant pain after injury, of whom one-third have severe pain2, 3. Post-SCI pain can increase with time and is often refractory to conventional treatment approaches4. Over the past decade, clinical studies have shown that post-SCI pain interferes with rehabilitation, daily activities, and quality of life and may substantially influence mood, leading to depression and even suicide4-7.Chronic neuropathic pain following SCI is divided into three types: at-level pain (pain within the body segments innervated by spinal cord segments at the level of the injury), below-level pain (pain within body segments caudal to the level at which the spinal cord was injured), and above-level pain (pain within body segments rostral to the level at which the spinal cord was injured)8. The mechanisms underlying SCI-induced chronic neuropathic pain are not well understood. Aberrant central sprouting of nociceptive fibers … Continue reading

Good samaritan donates 500 to widow denied IVF treatment with dead husband’s sperm

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2014

Donna Turner is one step closer to fulfilling her late husband's dying wish[INS ] New bride, Donna Turner, 32, was left distraught after her local NHS refused to carry out the 3,500 IVF treatment to fulfil her late husband Paul's dying wish because it would make her a single parent. Mr Turner died from bowel cancer in January 2013, aged 39, just eight months after the couple married. Now good samaritan William Brady has written a 500 cheque to help Mrs Turner get one step closer to raising the cash to have it done privately. The father-of-two from Addlestone in Surrey, said: "I'm just a sincere well-wisher. "I love my kids so much and I think this lady should have a chance of having that happiness. If she can't get it through the National Health I would hope she can get it through private means." Although prompted by his disgust at the NHS's decision Mr Brady said he recently had treatment on the NHS and was keen to stress it was vastly different to Mrs Turner's. "They were absolutely brilliant to me, I can't speak highly enough of the staff. "But I am disgusted at some of the cases where … Continue reading

Scientists oppose experiments on GM crops

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2014

A group of scientists Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi protesting the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee's decision to carry on experiments on GM crops as these adversely impact the environment. "It is shocking that GEAC took this decision in its first meeting after your government took charge. It is unfortunate the committee continues to follow the unscientific approach towards environmental release of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) when there is growing scientific evidence on the adverse impact of GMOs on human health and environment," said the letter. The GEAC under the environment, forests and climate change ministry recently approved numerous experiments on GM crops, including many GM food crops. The letter was written by P.M. Bhargava, Padma Bhushan awardee and former member of National Knowledge Commission; Minoo Parabia, retired professor of Bio-Sciences at the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University; V.S. Vijayan, former chairman of Kerala State Biodiversity Board; Dinesh Abrol, visiting professor at the Centre for Studies in Science Policy and Tushar Chakraborty, senior scientist at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata. They added in the letter that opposition to open release of GMOs originated in scientific circles and continues to be fuelled by ever-growing scientific evidence of its … Continue reading

Christian ethicists concerned over ‘three parent baby’ IVF plan

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2014

Ben Birchall/PA Wire Christian ethicists have joined scientists in expressing concern about the latest Government steps towards creating what have been dubbed "three-parent babies". The Church of England is among those calling for more research. The Government last week published its response to a 12-week Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) consultation on draft regulations to permit the use of new techniques to prevent transmission of seriousmitochondrial disease from mother to child. Some oppose the proposed IVF technique, "mitochondrial replacement therapy", because they believe it is a form of genetic modification and creates children with, in effect, three parents. The Government response emphasises that no nuclear DNA, which provides physical and other traits that children inherit from their parents, would be contributed from the donated female egg or embryo. The Government has consistently rejected claims that the techniquesconstitute genetic modification. Critics are protesting in particular against the Government's working definition in the document of genetic modification to mean the modification only of nuclear DNA in the chromosome meaning that mitochondrial donation techniques are not being counted as actual genetic modification. It is estimated that one in 6,500 children are born each year with serious mitochondrial DNA disorder which can have … Continue reading

Spurrier: Chemistry apparent on the field

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2014

FILE - In this Sept. 28, 2013 file photo, South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier calls for a timeout against Central Florida during the second half of an NCAA college football game in Orlando, Fla. Spurrier wasn't sure he'd hang around 10 seasons at South Carolina when he took the job. Now he isn't ready to leave. (AP Photo/John Raoux, File) COLUMBIA - Lorenzo Ward had walked barely 10 steps off the football field after South Carolina's first preseason practice, but he'd seen enough to fuel already high expectations. "I think there's a little something different about this team," the Gamecocks defensive coordinator said. Under the lights, Ward was impressed with what he witnessed Friday night. He was heading toward his office, ready to study the film and further evaluate the practice. But what had Ward smiling was something that can't be seen on film. "I just think there's something special about them," Ward continued. "I think the way that they're about business. There's no big-name players on this team, and so they're like family and they play as a team. I think it's something special when you do that." Less than four weeks from their first game, there are … Continue reading
