There Are Cells Inside Teeth That Can Turn Back Into Stem Cells

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2014

Inside each of our hard, calcified teeth is a small population of living stem cells that can differentiate into many types of tissue. The origin of those stem cells has long been unknown, but scientists may now have a completely surprising answer: Cells of the nervous system can migrate into the middle of a tooth and actually turn back into stem cells. If verified, this could be a possible new source for stem cells. Teeth are connected to nerves, as anyone who's had the misfortune of a toothache would know. Igor Adameyko of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and his team were studying glial cells, which support and protect neurons, in mice. By fluorescently labeling these glial cells, they could track the fate of these cells over time. What they found was entirely surprising. Glial cells from nerves in the gums actually migrated into teeth, where they turned into mesenchymal stem cells and eventually into tooth cells. Stem cells differentiating into specific cells is to be expected, but glial cells turning into stem cells is the exact opposite of what we thought we knew. The study published in Nature is definitely exciting, but it will of course need to be … Continue reading

A mathematical theory proposed by Alan Turing in 1952 can explain the formation of fingers

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2014

Alan Turing, the British mathematician (1912-1954), is famous for a number of breakthroughs, which altered the course of the 20th century. In 1936 he published a paper, which laid the foundation of computer science, providing the first formal concept of a computer algorithm. He next played a pivotal role in the Second World War, designing the machines which cracked the German military codes, enabling the Allies to defeat the Nazis in several crucial battles. And in the late 1940's he turned his attention to artificial intelligence and proposed a challenge, now called the Turing test, which is still important to the field today. His contribution to mathematical biology is less famous, but was no less profound. He published just one paper (1952), but it triggered a whole new field of mathematical enquiry into pattern formation. He discovered that a system with just 2 molecules could, at least in theory, create spotty or stripy patterns if they diffused and chemically interacted in just the right way. His mathematical equations showed that starting from uniform condition (ie. a homogeneous distribution -- no pattern) they could spontaneously self-organise their concentrations into a repetitive spatial pattern. This theory has come to be accepted as … Continue reading

DNA evidence cited in 1979 Lackawanna slaying

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2014

Michael Rodriguezs semen was detected on his former wifes clothing after she was found fatally stabbed 108 times in a Lackawanna cemetery 35 years ago, according to testimony Thursday at a pretrial hearing. And her blood was found on his leather jacket. Dr. John P. Simich, head of the Erie County Central Police Services Forensic Lab, testified about some of the DNA evidence that led to last years murder indictment of the 60-year-old defendant in the 1979 slaying of his estranged wife, Patricia. Simich said testing last year found DNA matching the defendants in a semen stain on the victims black body suit. Testing in 2009 of dried red stains on a leather jacket that state prosecutors say belonged to the defendant found DNA matching that of the victim, Simich said. Simich said that no one ever asked the lab to test the jacket from 1993, when the lab first started doing DNA testing, until 2009 when the State Police submitted the jacket for testing after reopening the investigation. The testimony came at the hearing on a motion by defense attorney Paul J. Cambria Jr. to dismiss the indictment because of what he calls unreasonable delay in charging his client … Continue reading

DNA of Elgin hires promotions coordinator

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2014

Putting in an unsolicited day of volunteering at Elgin's Fourth of July parade paid off big for the new promotions coordinator hired by the city's downtown neighborhood association. Keith Weatherspoon started work Monday after being selected from about 25 applicants, Executive Director Deirdre White said. "He wanted to show his commitment (by volunteering), and that really stood out to me," White said. "Then I interviewed him, and it just worked out really well." Weatherspoon, 42, most recently worked as "brand ambassador" for Dixon Golf in Tempe, Arizona, before moving back to Elgin, where he grew up. He graduated from Larkin High School and has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Eastern Illinois University. "Keith's knowledge and experience in the industry has already made him a key addition to the DNA family," White said. "We view his appointment as a sign of our continued commitment to the businesses of downtown and being a leading force in Elgin's revitalization." Weatherspoon will plan, organize, market and execute special events and promotional activities for downtown Elgin, White said. The DNA also has two part-time staff members. Its annual budget is about $250,000, roughly half from the city of Elgin. Among his first goals is … Continue reading
