The Adult Stem Cell Technology Center, LLC Launches A Marketing Campaign To License Adult Stem Cell Biotechnologies

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2014

Boston, MA (PRWEB) July 31, 2014 Bostons Adult Stem Cell Technology Center, LLC (ASCTC) finds itself flush with innovative adult stem cell biotechnologies. Currently the company holds seven recently issued patents and has three additional patent applications currently under examination by the U.S. Patent and Trademarks Office. The patented inventions address two of the most vexing problems in adult stem cell biology research and regenerative medicine. Adult stem cells are difficult to identify; and they have been difficult to multiply to sufficient numbers to support regenerative medicine applications. ASCTC has addressed the identity problem by developing patented biomarkers that are found exclusively on adult stem cells. The biomarkers are based on ASCTCs expertise in defining properties of adult stem cells that are not shared by any other normal cell types in the body. The patented biomarkers also identify some types of cancer stem cells. Therefore, they have applications in both stem cell medicine and cancer medicine. ASCTCa success in developing procedures for producing adult stem cells in large numbers is due to the companys expertise in adult stem cell growth control. ASCTCs technology uses natural compounds found in the body to instruct adult stem cells to multiply in a controlled … Continue reading

. Bollywood actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who was adjudged the worlds fourth most BEAUTIFUL LADY, today reiterated the importance of stem cell banking by mothers and the situation that led to her decision to go in for stem cell banking for her daughter. The decision to bank umbilical cord cell had to be taken at a time when taking baby steps to parenthood. And on our part, we did some research, spoke to friends and our families, of course. We were informed about it, said Bachchan, a young mother herself. Aging Immune System May Get Kick-Start from Discovery of Molecular Defect

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2014

Health and Medicine for Seniors Aging Immune System May Get Kick-Start from Discovery of Molecular Defect Old stem cells are not just sitting there with damaged DNA ready to develop cancer, as it has long been postulated "The decline of stem-cell function is a big part of age-related problems. Achieving longer lives relies in part on achieving a better understanding of why stem cells are not able to maintain optimal functioning." Emmanuelle Passegu, PhD July 31, 2014 - There's a good reason seniors over 60 are not donor candidates for bone marrow transplantation. The immune system ages and weakens with time, making the elderly prone to life-threatening infection and other maladies, and a UC San Francisco research team now has discovered a reason why. "We have found the cellular mechanism responsible for the inability of blood-forming cells to maintain blood production over time in an old organism, and have identified molecular defects that could be restored for rejuvenation therapies," said Emmanuelle Passegu, PhD, a professor of medicine and a member of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCSF. Passegu, an expert on the stem cells that give rise to the blood and … Continue reading

Transplantation shown to be highly effective in treating immune deficiency in children

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 31-Jul-2014 Contact: Courtney DeNicola Nowak denicolc@mskcc.org 212-639-3573 Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Babies who are born with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) can be successfully treated with a transplant of blood-forming stem cells, according to experts led by Memorial Sloan Kettering's Richard J. O'Reilly, MD, a world-renowned pioneer in the development of transplant protocols. Their review will be published in the July 30 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. SCID is a group of inherited disorders that cause the immune system to severely malfunction. When this breakdown occurs, babies no longer have the ability to fight off routine infections because their natural, built-in defense system has been damaged. If undiagnosed or left untreated, SCID is almost always fatal within the first year of life. A review of more than 240 patient cases found transplants to be quite effective, especially when performed early in life. Of those children receiving transplants within three and a half months after birth, 94 percent were alive five years later. The best results, not surprisingly, were seen after transplant from "matched sibling" donors. But among patients who didn't have a matched sibling, overall five-year survival rates were quite high 77 to 93 percent … Continue reading

Vampire facials are said to refresh and heal

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2014

A new facial is gaining popularity around Baltimore, and while it won't make you live forever, some doctors and patients say it will make you look younger at least for a few months. The vampire facial, a nonsurgical procedure made famous by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, uses a patient's blood to stimulate healing and regenerate cells. "After healing, my skin just seemed smoother," said Grace Ban, an Odenton resident who received the procedure to reduce the appearance of acne scars and minimize the wrinkles around her eyes. "Even my husband commented a few times after the treatment. He said, 'Your skin looks great.'" But before you book your appointment, experts say it's important to understand just how the procedure works and to know that the science supporting any aesthetic benefit is inconclusive. "Everybody would like to look younger and more fresh," said Dr. John Kim, a faculty member with the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine. "The jury's still out on long-term efficacy of these procedures, but short term, there's some definite benefits." There are several different forms of "vampire" treatments, says Dr. Beth Comeau, the Ellicott City aesthetic medicine doctor who treated Ban. All of the treatments use platelet-rich plasma … Continue reading

Aims & Scope Cell Medicine informs society about original, peer-reviewed research and review articles on the subject of cell therapy and its translational application to human diseases. A wide range of topics involving the use of cells, engineered cells and stem cells derived from a multitude of different sources, covering aspects of physiological, medical, tissue engineering, and device-oriented manipulation of the nervous system, endocrine, cardiac, bone, skin, muscle and other organs, with the ultimate aim of clinical translation are acceptable. To provide complete coverage of this revolutionary field, Cell Medicine reports on relevant technological advances and their potential for translational medicine. Rigorous peer review is applied to all articles published in Cell Medicine to ensure only high quality contributions from all areas of translational research are accepted. While the journal Cell Transplantation, issued by the same publishers, is primarily restricted to articles that directly relate to cell transplantation, Cell Medicine also encompasses other forms of cellular study that are expected to ultimately result in a translational therapy and so is not limited to cellular transplantation. Cell Medicine is an online Open Access journal. This allows your work to be disseminated to a wider audience and also entitle you to a … Continue reading

Cell's recycling center implicated in division decisions

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 28-Jul-2014 Contact: Catherine Kolf ckolf@jhmi.edu 443-440-1929 Johns Hopkins Medicine Most cells do not divide unless there is enough oxygen present to support their offspring, but certain cancer cells and other cell types circumvent this rule. Researchers at The Johns Hopkins University have now identified a mechanism that overrides the cells' warning signals, enabling cancers to continue to divide even without a robust blood supply. In the process, the researchers found that lysosomes the cell's protein "recycling centers" help govern cell division decisions. They also uncovered new evidence that certain drugs can halt the growth of tumors that have high levels of the protein HIF-1alpha. A summary of their findings will be published the week of July 28 in the journal PNAS. Low levels of oxygen stimulate the production and activation of HIF-1alpha, which protects cells in two ways. Primarily, it turns on several genes for proteins that help the cells adapt to the lack of oxygen. It can also stop the duplication of DNA, which prevents cells from dividing and adding more oxygen-using cells to an already harsh environment. Knowing that some cells ignore the warnings of HIF-1alpha and divide anyway, Gregg Semenza, M.D., Ph.D., and his … Continue reading
