New IVF treatment has first success

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2014

A new IVF technique to check embryos for genetic disorders before they're implanted has had its first success, after doctors in London reported the first pregnancy in Europe from the procedure. The technique lets doctors select embryos that are free from dangerous mutations carried by one or both parents, even if the exact nature of the mutation is unknown. Experts at the Centre for Reproductive and Genetic Health (CRGH) said Carmen Meagu, 26, and her husband Gabriel had a high chance of passing on a lethal disease to their child. They are now 17 weeks into the pregnancy. Normal embryo testing requires weeks of laboratory work , but new technique 'karyomapping' takes just two weeks to complete, allowing couples to be tested without having to break their IVF treatment cycle. Meagu has a 50 percent chance of passing on a condition called Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a muscular dystrophy disease that killed her father in his 50s but only mildly affects her. The centre's director Paul Serhal said the technique is likely to replace more traditional ways of testing embryos because it is faster, more powerful and no more expensive. It is to be available on the NHS in the UK. WENN.com … Continue reading

Guess less with genetics

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2014

AUSTRALIAN Sheep Breeding Values have proven their accuracy for more than 20 years, taking much of the guesswork out of breeding sheep. But according to Sheep Genetics manager Hamish Chandler, it is up to stud and commercial breeders to get the most out of them. Sheep Genetics has nearly 900 clients in Australia, including more than 500 terminal breeders, and additional clients overseas including some in the United States and New Zealand. The national genetic evaluation system which operates under the brands of MERINOSELECT and LAMBPLAN has delivered significant genetic gains. At the sold-out Sheep Genetics breakfast seminar held during the recent LambEx in Adelaide, Mr Chandler highlighted the large variation between the rate of gain between the top 20 per cent and bottom 20pc of producers and potential to drive greater profits. He said there was almost a $2 a ewe joined per year difference between the rate of gain of the top 20pc and bottom 20pc of producers of maternal breeds on the Maternal $ index. And while Merinos were a diverse gene pool, the MP+ Index varied around the same amount. In terminals, the variation in average rate of genetic gain was 50 cents/ewe joined from the … Continue reading

Home genetics startup 23andMe lands $1.4-million grant

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2014

Home genetics startup 23andMe has secured a $1.4-million two-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to build survey tools and expand its gene database. With these funds from NIH, an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the company intends to use its stores of genetic data for various research projects. External researchers will be able to access information on thousands of diseases and traits for more than 400,000 people. The grant enables researchers from around the world to make genetic discoveries, Anne Wojcicki, chief executive officer of 23andMe, said in a statement. 23andMe, which is backed by Google Inc., has not always played well with the federal government. Late last year, it hit a major regulatory snag when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration expressed concerns about the public health consequences of inaccurate results from 23andMes $99 DNA test. The agency took issue with 23andMes claim that its service could deliver insights about peoples genetic predispositions toward 254 diseases and conditions. 23andMe agreed to stop marketing and selling its test. But it has continued to grow its genetic database by offering raw health and ancestral information, such as a persons ethnic heritage, in … Continue reading

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise ST. LOUIS, July 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- SAGE Labs Inc., a leading provider of products, services and technologies in the field of genome engineering, announced today that they have licensed CRISPR/Cas9 technology from the Broad Institute. The license enables SAGE Labs to use the CRISPR/Cas9 system to engineer cell and animal models for their clients as well as distribute validated CRISPR reagents. This is the second license obtained by SAGE Labs around CRISPR/Cas9 technology; SAGE also obtained a license from Caribou Biosciences in September 2013. The Broad Institute was recently issued the first patent for CRISPR/Cas9 technology based on the research of Feng Zhang, PhD, published in Science in January of 2013. CRISPR/Cas9 technology represents the latest advancement in nuclease-based gene editing tools, which have revolutionized genetic engineering by markedly reducing development times and enabling genetic engineering in potentially any species. David Smoller, PhD., CEO of SAGE Labs, explained, "At SAGE Labs we use the latest technologies to provide our clients with the most advanced models of human disease, and in the shortest timelines possible. It's also essential that our clients receive the freedom-to-operate with their research models, and we're committed to … Continue reading
