News Review From Harvard Medical School — Study: Early Hormone Therapy OK for Heart

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2014

July 30, 2014 News Review From Harvard Medical School -- Study: Early Hormone Therapy OK for Heart Short-term hormone therapy for menopause symptoms is unlikely to harm the heart, a new study suggests. An earlier, large-scale study linked hormone replacement therapy with higher risks of heart disease and stroke. But the women in that study were well past the age of menopause. The new study included 727 women, ages 42 to 58. They were no more than 3 years past menopause. All were at low risk of heart disease. The women were randomly divided into 3 groups. One group took pills containing low doses of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Another group took progesterone pills and wore estrogen skin patches. The third group received placebo patches and pills. They contained no hormones. Everyone had ultrasound tests to show the thickness of artery walls in the neck. Another test looked at new calcium deposits in arteries around the heart. These are tests for atherosclerosis, the cause of most heart attacks and strokes. After four years, researchers did the same tests again. Increases in artery thickness and calcium deposits were about the same for all three groups. The journal Annals of Internal … Continue reading

In the Quest to Treat Intracerebral Hemorrhage, Nanomaterials Show Promise

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Intracerebral hemorrhage is a type of stroke that affects two million people worldwide each year. Despite its seriousness, no effective treatment has yet been developed. But if a recent study in the journal Nanomedicine is right, good news for doctors and patients might one day arrive in a very small package: namely, a peptide nanofiber scaffold. In the last few decades, molecular engineering of various self-assembling peptide nanofiber scaffolds (SAPNS) has emerged as an active area of research. The peptide can form stable structures that self-assemble into a gel-like substance. Now a University of Hong Kong team led by Professor Raymond Tak Fai Cheung, PhD and his student Lynn Yan-Hua Sang, PhD, who performed the majority of the experimental work, suggests a new therapeutic strategy for intracerebral hemorrhage: injecting SAPNS directly into a hemorrhagic lesion. Using rats, the team found that SAPNS attenuated brain injury, reduced brain cavity volume and enhanced recovery of brain function. This is the first time a nanomaterial has been used to replace the hematoma in the deep brain in a rat model of intracerebral hemorrhage. The hemostatic effects of SAPNS and other self-assembling peptides were discovered by … Continue reading

232 Tiny 'Toothlets' Removed from Teenager in India

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2014

A team of oral surgeons reportedly removed 232 teeth from the mouth of a 17-year-old boy in India on July 21. The boy was diagnosed with a condition called complex composite odontoma, a rare type of tumor that affects the jaw or gums, his doctors said. Ashik Gavai was admitted to JJ Hospital in Mumbai with swelling in his right jaw, Dr. Sunanda Dhiware, head of the hospital's dental department, told BBC News. The boy had been experiencing discomfort from the swelling for 18 months, Dhiware said. His father, Suresh Gavai, told the Mumbai Mirror that his son began complaining of severe pain a month ago. In people with complex composite odontoma, a tumor grows in the jaw and contains tooth-like structures, as well as blobs of enamel and dentin, the tissues that make up teeth. "Once we opened [the tumor], little pearl-like teeth started coming out, one-by-one," Dhiware told the BBC. "Initially, we were collecting them, they were really like small white pearls. But then we started to get tired. We counted 232 teeth." However, these pearl-like objects, aren't really teeth in the truest sense of the word, according to Dr. J. David Johnson an associate professor at the … Continue reading

Stem cell discovery may make tissue regeneration more efficient

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2014

A new stem-cell discovery might one day lead to a more streamlined process for obtaining stem cells, which in turn could be used in the development of replacement tissue for failing body parts, according to UC San Francisco scientists who reported the findings in the current edition of Cell. The work builds on a strategy that involves reprogramming adult cells back to an embryonic state in which they again have the potential to become any type of cell. The efficiency of this process may soon increase thanks to the scientists identification of biochemical pathways that can inhibit the necessary reprogramming of gene activity in adult human cells. Removing these barriers increased the efficiency of stem-cell production, the researchers found. Our new work has important implications for both regenerative medicine and cancer research, said Miguel Ramalho-Santos, Ph.D., associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences and a member of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCSF, who led the research, funded in part by a prestigious NIH Directors New Innovator Award. The earlier discovery that it was possible to take specialized adult cells and reverse the developmental clock to strip the mature cells … Continue reading

Beware of Claims about Cosmetic Stem Cells Procedures, Says Review in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise July 29, 2014 Advertising claims for cosmetic procedures using stem cells are running far ahead of the scientific evidence for safety and effectiveness, according to a review in the August issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). "Stem cells offer tremendous potential, but the marketplace is saturated with unsubstantiated and sometimes fraudulent claims that may place patients at risk," write Dr Michael T. Longaker of Stanford University Medical Center and colleagues. 'Worrying advertisements' for cosmetic stem cell procedures Dr Longaker and coauthors raise concerns about the unregulated use of stem cells for unproven indicationsincluding cosmetic procedures. While stem cell therapy "remains in its infancy," they write, "there are a growing number of cosmetic practitioners that are advertising minimally invasive, stem cell-based rejuvenation procedures." The article was prompted by "worrying advertisements" claiming benefits of stem cell procedures for facelifts, breast augmentationeven "stem cell vaginal rejuvenation." These ads claim benefits from procedures that have not undergone rigorous scientific evaluationincluding potential risks related to stem cell and tissue processing and the effects of aging on stem cells. To gain insight into these claims, Dr … Continue reading

Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy logo. (PRNewsFoto/Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy) WASHINGTON, July 29, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The House of Representatives today approved legislation to update the landmark Muscular Dystrophy Community Assistance, Research, and Education (MD-CARE) Act so the law continues getting results for all patients impacted by Duchenne and other forms of muscular dystrophy. The House approved the bill, H.R. 594, sponsored by Congressman Dr. Michael Burgess of Texas and Eliot Engel of New York, by unanimous voice vote. It must now clear the Senate to be signed into law by President Obama. Once that occurs, it will update the MD-CARE Act, which was enacted in 2001 and last updated in 2008. "Today's action is another significant milestone for all of us in the Duchenne and broader muscular dystrophy communities," said Pat Furlong, Founding President and CEO of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, the leading advocacy organization fighting to end Duchenne. "With this bill, we will ensure the MD-CARE Act keeps pace with the scientific and clinical needs of today and tomorrow, particularly for those with Duchenne and other forms of muscular dystrophy who are now living into adulthood." 'Love Hormone' Oxytocin May Help Some With Autism

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2014

By Alan Mozes HealthDay Reporter TUESDAY, July 29, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Treating certain adult autism patients with just a single dose of the hormone oxytocin quickly improved their ability to judge facial expressions and emotions, Japanese researchers report. Known as the "love hormone," oxytocin has been shown to play a role in emotional bonding between lovers, and between mothers and their children. In this study, it boosted underperforming neural activity in a key area of the brain that has long been associated with the processing of both empathy and emotion recognition. The finding has only been observed among male autism patients who are relatively "high-functioning," meaning that they possess verbal communication skills that exceed those of people with more severe autism. Yet, study co-author Hidenori Yamasue suggested that even "low-functioning" autism patients might ultimately derive some benefit from oxytocin treatment, because the effect of the hormone is on the ability to interpret nonverbal facial expressions, rather than dialogue. "Therefore, autistic people with deficits in nonverbal communication and interaction [might] benefit from oxytocin administration," he noted. Yamasue, from the department of neuropsychiatry in the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Tokyo, and his team report the findings online … Continue reading
