Chamoun fails to finish 85kg competition

Malek Chamoun's dreams of a Commonwealth Games weightlifting medal have ended in disaster with the legally-blind lifter failing to finish the 85kg competition on Monday. Chamoun, from Sydney, was rated as an outside chance of a medal in Glasgow, but his decision to open his snatch campaign at 140kg backfired spectacularly when he record three no lifts. The 25-year-old, who was diagnosed with the degenerative condition retinitis pigmentosa at seven, is led on stage by his father George and was listed to go in at 135kg for his first lift. But in an attempt to strike an early advantage over his rivals he increased the weight by 5kg. He never looked comfortable and despite being roared on by a sympathetic crowd he dropped his final lift and fell straight into the arms of his father on the side of the stage. Lifters who fail to make any of their snatch attempts are immediately eliminated from the competition and cannot compete in the clean and jerk event. All aspects of my life have improved, said 28-year-old Dan Tiel, I dont even walk with a cane anymore. Tiel's mother first learned of the clinical trial at Northwestern University while doing research on Facebook. I had been searching for hope for 10 years and this was the first time I really felt it, Gina Tiel said. Dr. Richard Burt said about 80 patients a year are getting the stem cell transplants at Northwestern for a variety of autoimmune diseases.
