DNA-testing for crime scene investigations will soon identify criminals in a matter of HOURS

Posted: Published on July 28th, 2014

UK Home Office has invested 431,000 in development of 'Rapid DNA' The system will enable the identification of suspects in under two hours One device being introduced looks like a printer and accepts swabs It can be used by someone with no expertise and matches the inputted swab against the national DNA database to make a match And at Sheffield Hallam University in-depth fingerprint technology is being developed to reveal more about a criminal's background By Jonathan O'Callaghan Published: 05:50 EST, 28 July 2014 | Updated: 05:50 EST, 28 July 2014 CSI has taken a step closer to reality as rapid DNA testing that could identify killers in hours has been revealed. The method reduces the time taken to identify suspects at a crime scene from days, preventing suspects going on the run or committing another offense before they are apprehended. Rapid DNA, in tandem with innovative fingerprint technology, is being heralded as a significant revolution in crime scene investigations. The UK Home Office has invested 431,000 ($732,000) in development of 'Rapid DNA' as part of the Police Innovation Fund. Through the endeavour they are hoping to improve the accuracy and speed of identifying suspects at a crime scene, and … Continue reading

90 percent of DNA ‘just filler’ – study

Posted: Published on July 28th, 2014

The old adage that we only use 10 percent of our brains is a myth, but when it comes to DNA, it seems that may indeed be the case. Researchers in the UK are claiming more than 90 percent of the human genome is either "junk" DNA that once served a purpose but is no longer required for survival or doing nothing useful at all. "If it was possible, you could snip away 90 percent of our genetic information and nothing would change at all," Professor Chris Ponting of Oxford University told newspaper The Telegraph. The team looked at what DNA humans share with other animals from our evolutionary tree, to see what genes evolution has conserved and which it has dumped. If a particular piece of DNA code is shared across different species, that suggests it does something worth preserving. The new findings could help speed up genetic research by allowing scientists to focus on the DNA that really matters. "You would need to look at less than a tenth of the genome and that could speed up the ability to track down the genetic changes," says Prof Ponting. "If our DNA was largely functional, we'd need to pay … Continue reading

Kellie van Meurs, pictured with her husband Mark, died while undergoing stem cell treatment in Russia. Photo: Facebook Supporters of a Brisbane mother-of-two who died while undergoing a controversial stem cell treatment in Russia say it did not cause her death, nor have others been discouraged from seeking it. Kellie van Meurs suffered from a rare neurological disorder called stiff person syndrome, which causes progressive rigidity of the body and chronic pain. She travelled to Moscow in late June to undergo an autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) under the care of Dr Denis Fedorenko from the National Pirogov Medical Surgical Centre. I do know that Rosemary [Ms van Meurs' aunt and carer in Moscow] felt she received the best possible care, especially from Dr Fedorenko, he said.
