Preventive Autism Treatment Focus of Research Awards

Posted: Published on July 28th, 2014

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) - The Hartwell Foundation has presented an Individual Biomedical Research Award to Professor Judy A. Van de Water of the University of California, Davis, recognizing research that could affect nearly one in every four cases of autism among children in the U.S. Van de Water, an immunologist and professor of internal medicine in the UC Davis School of Medicine, is one of 11 scientists from throughout the U.S. selected to receive the award that recognizes early-stage, innovative and leading-edge biomedical research with the potential to benefit children in the United States. Van de Water is an autism researcher affiliated with the UC Davis MIND Institute. She is the eighth UC Davis researcher selected for the honor since 2008. Awardees receive $100,000 direct costs each year for three years. In 2013, Van de Water described how unique antibodies in the bloodstream of some pregnant mothers target proteins critical to the fetal brain development. The discovery represents the first definitive cause for a subset of cases of non-genetic causes of autism. Van de Water coined the term maternal autoantibody-related (MAR) autism to describe the 23 percent of autism cases associated with maternal autoantibodies. Finding a way to target autoantibodies Her … Continue reading

Anti-Inflammatory Drug for Parkinson's

Posted: Published on July 28th, 2014

An experimental anti-inflammatory drug can protect vulnerable neurons and reduce motor deficits in a rat model of Parkinson's disease, according to researchers at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. The results were published in July 2014 the Journal of Parkinson's Disease. A release from the university notes that the findings demonstrate that the drug, called XPro1595, can reach the brain at sufficient levels and have beneficial effects when administered by subcutaneous injection. Previous studies of XPro1595 in animals tested more invasive modes of delivery, such as direct injection into the brain. The release quotes Malu Tansey, PhD, associate professor of physiology, as saying, "This is an important step forward for anti-inflammatory therapies for Parkinson's disease. Our results provide a compelling rationale for moving toward a clinical trial in early Parkinson's disease patients." The new research on subcutaneous administration of XPro1595 was funded by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF). XPro1595 is licensed by FPRT Bio and is seeking funding for a clinical trial to test its efficacy in the early stages of Parkinson's disease. "We are proud to have supported this work and glad to see positive pre-clinical results," said Marco Baptista, PhD, MJFF associate director … Continue reading

Kellie van Meurs, pictured with her husband Mark, died while undergoing stem cell treatment in Russia. Photo: Facebook Supporters of a Brisbane mother-of-two who died while undergoing a controversial stem cell treatment in Russia say it did not cause her death, nor have others been discouraged from seeking it. Kellie van Meurs suffered from a rare neurological disorder called stiff person syndrome, which causes progressive rigidity of the body and chronic pain. She travelled to Moscow in late June to undergo an autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) under the care of Dr Denis Fedorenko from the National Pirogov Medical Surgical Centre. Cell therapy for multiple sclerosis patients: Closer than ever?

Posted: Published on July 28th, 2014

Scientists at The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) Research Institute are one step closer to creating a viable cell replacement therapy for multiple sclerosis from a patient's own cells. For the first time, NYSCF scientists generated induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells lines from skin samples of patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis and further, they developed an accelerated protocol to induce these stem cells into becoming oligodendrocytes, the myelin-forming cells of the central nervous system implicated in multiple sclerosis and many other diseases. Existing protocols for producing oligodendrocytes had taken almost half a year to produce, limiting the ability of researchers to conduct their research. This study has cut that time approximately in half, making the ability to utilize these cells in research much more feasible. Stem cell lines and oligodendrocytes allow researchers to "turn back the clock" and observe how multiple sclerosis develops and progresses, potentially revealing the onset of the disease at a cellular level long before any symptoms are displayed. The improved protocol for deriving oligodendrocyte cells will also provide a platform for disease modeling, drug screening, and for replacing the damaged cells in the brain with healthy cells generated using this method. "We are so … Continue reading

Stem cell banking gets a star nod

The Hindu Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Mayur Abhaya of LifeCell launch the public stem cell bank. Photo : M.Vedhan Its a no brainer, said Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, when asked why shed decided to bank her umbilical cord blood after her baby was born. Its a simple but very precious gift we can give to our children. Medical progress is growing and will continue to grow. We already know how helpful stem cells extracted from cord blood can be; so it was very natural and easy for us to make that choice, she said. Speaking at a press meet to launch a public stem cell banking venture by LifeCell, a stem cell bank, Ms. Bachchan lauded this initiative, saying it would have a large social impact and address the dearth of stem cells in the country. Under this initiative, said Mayur Abhaya, CEO and managing director of LifeCell, parents will be encouraged to donate their cord blood after their baby is born. The blood will be collected, stem cells extracted and stored by LifeCell. A public cord blood inventory will be created and when needed, patients and their families can find a match in it, and the stem cells can be … Continue reading

Genetic switch discovered that can prevent peripheral vascular disease in mice

Posted: Published on July 28th, 2014

Millions of people in the United States have a circulatory problem of the legs called peripheral vascular disease. It can be painful and may even require surgery in serious cases. This disease can lead to severe skeletal muscle wasting and, in turn, limb amputation. At The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School, scientists tested a non-surgical preventative treatment in a mouse model of the disease and it was associated with increased blood circulation. Their proof-of-concept study appears in the journal Cell Reports. Unlike previous studies in which other investigators used individual stimulatory factors to grow blood vessels, Vihang Narkar, Ph.D., senior author and assistant professor in the Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology at the UTHealth Medical School, identified and turned off a genetic switch that stifles blood vessel development. "We discovered an inhibitory switch that degrades blood vessels," said Narkar, whose laboratory is in the UTHealth Center for Metabolic and Degenerative Diseases at The Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases. "We were able to genetically turn it off to prevent peripheral vascular disease in a preclinical study." Added Narkar, "Our next step will be to test this targeted … Continue reading

Asian stem cell donors are rare in Quebec

Posted: Published on July 27th, 2014

MONTREAL Two months since she suffered a relapse of leukemia, Mai Duong still hasnt found a compatible stem cell donor, but her friends havent lost hope. A dozen volunteers from S.O.S. Mai and Hma-Qubec staff registered close to 200 people in a swab drive during the 2014 Dragon Boat Challenge at the Olympic Basin last weekend. Since July 1, Mais friends and family, as well as members of the Vietnamese community, have helped to sign up around 2,000 potential donors, half of whom are Asian. Of Vietnamese origin, Duong, 34, has been struggling to find a match because of the lack of Asian donors on Quebecs registry and worldwide. Only 0.5 per cent of donors in the province are of Asian descent, according to Hma-Qubec. Christiane Rochon, a colleague and friend of Duongs for almost 10 years, volunteered to collect swabs on Saturday. When youre sick, I think everyone should have the same chances of recovering, she said, but its not like that right now. If youre not white, youre doomed. Hma-Qubec has been searching international registries to arrange an umbilical cord or bone marrow stem cell transplant for Duong. The challenge with Mai is that Vietnam doesnt have its … Continue reading
