Photo provided by Ilene Buchenau The Poway-Penasquitos branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) sponsored six Poway and Rancho Penasquitos girls to attend Tech Trek, a science and math camp for girls, which was held from June 22 to June 28 at UCSD. At Tech Trek, girls are assigned to a math or science core class, and spend a week learning about their field, doing hands-on experiments and working with other girls under the instruction of credentialed middle school teachers and women currently engaged professionally in math, science, or technology fields. The girls are from three middle schools in the Poway Unified School District: Gabby Decano and Cierra Stock from Meadowbrook Middle School; Kaitlyn Heard and Yarah Feteih from Black Mountain Middle School and Olivia Mahan and Abby Kooyman from Mesa Verde Middle School. All six girls were nominated by their science teachers, who gave them the applications for the camp. Some of … Continue reading

Stroke rates down in senior citizens, but not in youth

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2014

(KTVI)- Stroke rates decline, but heres whats surprising. This decrease is among senior citizens and not for those 65 years and under. St. Louis University Hospital Cardiologist, Dr. Michael Lim, talks about study results in if he was surprised and what the lower level for seniors is attributable to. So, why do rates in younger people remain high? For younger people, lifestyle changes just arent happening like they should and thats attributed to those issues. Heres the story: Seniors in America are suffering fewer strokes, regardless of their race or sex, a new long-term study reveals. Our study found that the decrease is happening in whites and blacks, which is very important because blacks are at an elevated risk of stroke, he added. However, people younger than 65 continued to suffer strokes at about the same rate, although the researchers found that more of these younger patients survived their stroke. The stroke death rate for people aged 65 and older held steady. One expert found some of the study results troubling. Diabetes, obesity and lack of physical activity are still major problems that have not been reduced in the last decade, this raises some red flags. Go here to read … Continue reading

Safety profile of blockbuster blood thinner comes under question

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2014

A new investigation has raised fresh questions about a bestselling prescription medication to reduce stroke risk in those with the heart rhythm disorder known as atrial fibrillation. Published Tuesday in the journal BMJ, a package of articles suggests that patients taking the drug dabigatran (marketed since 2010 as Pradaxa) may have a higher risk of life-threatening bleeding episodes than physicians and regulators had been led to believe. The BMJ probe also suggests that there may be safety benefits to monitoring Pradaxa's anticoagulant effect on individual patients -- a practice deemed unnecessary by the Food and Drug Administration when it approved the medication's marketing four years ago. Beneath these carefully worded questions of patient safety, the authors write, lie issues of integrity and transparency in the presentation by Pradaxa's manufacturer, Boehringer-Ingelheim, of early clinical trial data and of safety data collected since the drug hit the market. The judgment of U.S. and European drug regulators also comes in for questioning. In an apparent bid to position Pradaxa as an improvement on a long-used medication, Boehringer-Ingelheim "withheld from the [FDA's] regulators important analyses regarding how to use the drug as safely and effectively as possible," wrote BMJ's investigations editor, Deborah Cohen. Today, … Continue reading

The New York Stem Cell Foundation Partners With Beyond Batten Disease Foundation to Fight Juvenile Batten Disease

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2014

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 23, 2014 The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) and Beyond Batten Disease Foundation (BBDF) have partnered to develop stem cell resources to investigate and explore new treatments and ultimately find a cure for juvenile Batten disease, a fatal illness affecting children. NYSCF scientists will create induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell lines from skin samples of young people affected by juvenile Batten disease as well as unaffected family members. IPS cell lines are produced by artificially turning back the clock on skin cells to a time when they were embryonic-like and capable of becoming any cell in the body. Reprogramming juvenile Batten iPS cells to become brain and heart cells, will provide the infrastructure needed to investigate what is going wrong with the cells adversely affected by the disease. Thus far, efforts to study juvenile Batten disease have been done using rodent models or human skin cells; neither of which accurately mimic the disease in the brain, leaving researchers without proper tools to study the disease or a solid platform for testing drugs that prevent, halt, or reverse its progression. This will be the largest and first genetically diverse collection of human iPS cells for … Continue reading
