Woman needs flight to Israel for stem cell transplant

Posted: Published on July 24th, 2014

NEW YORK (WABC) -- "Physically and emotionally, it's got to be tough for you," Eyewitness News reporter Stacey Sager said. "It's everything," said Jill Bevilacqua, a patient. It's everything because for Jill Bevilacqua, a new type of stem cell transplant could be a life changer. Her multiple sclerosis is now accelerating to the point where she can barely do things for herself. Three weeks ago, they learned that a trial procedure she'd have to wait for here in the states had suddenly reopened in Israel, but the violence was escalating. "We're determined to get there because I don't know when this will ever happen again for her," said Doreen Bevilacqua, Jill's mother. They were booked on a Delta flight to Tel Aviv Thursday, but the FAA has now extended their ban on U.S. commercial flights there. The news from Delta wasn't good when Jill's mom called. "Then this morning they told me there are no seats available, you're on a wait list," Doreen Bevilacqua said. El-Al tells Eyewitness News, that the truth is, they have plenty of seats. Justice minister won't interfere with Stamina court decision

Posted: Published on July 23rd, 2014

'Ministry can't interfere with judges' Orlando tells Senate (ANSA) - Rome, July 23 - Justice Minister Andrea Orlando told the Senate health committee Wednesday that the ministry can't interfere with a court ruling that forced a hospital to administer the controversial Stamina stem-cell treatment to an ailing boy. His statement came after a court ordered the treatment administered to a child suffering from muscular dystrophy at a hospital in northern Italy on Tuesday, despite the fact that it has been discredited by many in the scientific community. The Stamina treatment was administered on the orders of a Sicilian court after the hospital in Brescia decided to suspend the procedure because it had been called into doubt. The justice ministry "cannot interfere with the court's decisions. The judge has freedom of interpretation," Orlando told MPs. "However, no amount of court rulings can fill what is a legislative void on this issue," he added. The credibility of the Stamina treatment - which involves extracting bone-marrow stem cells from a patient, supposedly turning them into neurons by exposing them to retinoic acid for two hours, and injecting them back into the patient - has long been suspect, and last autumn the health ministry … Continue reading

CP Help Center Adds New Study On Possible Causes of Cerebral Palsy

Posted: Published on July 23rd, 2014

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 23, 2014 The birth injury patient advocates at CerebralPalsyHelp.org are alerting parents of new research information on the site concerning the causes of cerebral palsy. A recent Norwegian study found a strong relation between cerebral palsy and past family history of the condition*. The CP Help Center is a national advocacy center providing the latest on cerebral palsy treatment, clinical trials, resources and litigation news. Parents can learn more about their childs condition and how it may have been caused, get information on available assistance, and decide if they should seek legal advice. Cerebral palsy restricts muscle movement, coordination and posture. The leading cause of functional and developmental disability in children in the United States**, it occurs in approximately 3.3 out of every 1,000 births, and affects approximately 500,000 children**. While CP alters muscle function, it is actually a neurological disorder caused by brain damage to the parts that control muscle function***. This usually occurs before, during or after birth***. Cerebral palsy may be caused by factors occurring to the fetus during pregnancy, or by trauma or asphyxiation during labor***. There is no cure at this time. However, researchers are working toward better treatments. Recently, … Continue reading

Gene inhibitor, salmon fibrin restore function lost in spinal cord injury

Posted: Published on July 23rd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 23-Jul-2014 Contact: Tom Vasich tmvasich@uci.edu 949-824-6455 University of California - Irvine Irvine, Calif., July 23, 2014 A therapy combining salmon fibrin injections into the spinal cord and injections of a gene inhibitor into the brain restored voluntary motor function impaired by spinal cord injury, scientists at UC Irvine's Reeve-Irvine Research Center have found. In a study on rodents, Gail Lewandowski and Oswald Steward achieved this breakthrough by turning back the developmental clock in a molecular pathway critical to the formation of corticospinal tract nerve connections and providing a scaffold so that neuronal axons at the injury site could grow and link up again. Results appear in the July 23 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience. The work expands on previous research at UCI. In 2010, Steward helped discover that axons flourish after the deletion of an enzyme called PTEN, which controls a molecular pathway regulating cell growth. PTEN activity is low during early development, allowing cell proliferation. PTEN subsequently turns on, inhibiting this pathway and precluding any ability to regenerate. Two years later, a UCI team found that salmon fibrin injected into rats with spinal cord injury filled cavities at the injury site, giving axons a framework … Continue reading
