Nanoparticles Improve Stroke Treatment

Posted: Published on July 23rd, 2014

Currently there is just one drug that has been approved for treatment of acute strokerecombinant tissue plasminogen activator, or t-PA. Essentially it works by thinning blood clots. Researchers at the University of Georgia (UGA) announced last week that they have developed a magnetic nanoparticle that when combined with t-PA can make the drug significantly more effective. The Georgia researchers injected magnetic nanorodsinto the bloodstream. When stimulated by rotating magnets the nanorods act as a kind of mixing tool that shakes up blood clots that have already been thinned by t-PA. The injected nanorods "act like stirring bars to drive t-PA to the site of the clot," said Yiping Zhao, professor of physics at UGA, in a press release. "Our preliminary results show that the breakdown of clots can be enhanced up to twofold compared to treatment with t-PA alone." Like recent research at Penn State University in which nanorods were combined with magnets and ultrasonic waves to make them spinand thereby churn up cancer cells, the nanoparticles are referred to as nanomotors. While this may offend the sensibility of some peoples understanding of what constitutes a motor, the term is used as well in the UGA research paper published in … Continue reading

Paralympian Jen French Announced as Conquer Paralysis Nows First Champion

St. Petersburg, FL (PRWEB) July 22, 2014 Joining Conquer Paralysis Now as its first champion in the movement to cure paralysis in the next decade is Paralympic silver medalist and quadriplegic Jennifer French. As a result of a snowboarding accident, French became a quadriplegic from a spinal cord injury in 1998. Now, she has joined a new effort to help find a cure for paralysis. People define cure differently, French said. For some, its walking again and for others, its something else. We have the image in our minds of what we were like before we were injured. For us, getting back to that state is whats important. French is a silver medalist representing Team USA at the 2012 Paralympic Games in the sport of sailing, and is an eight-time recipient of the Milan-Gruson Award given to the top disabled female skipper. She has been awarded 2012 Rolex Yachtwoman of the Year the first woman with a disability to do so. As co-founder and executive director of Neurotech Network, French guides the organizations focus to educate and advocate to and for persons with impairments, their caretakers and health care professionals regarding neurotechnology. She recently published her memoir, On My Feet … Continue reading

Mum's campaign to help Sophia walk

Posted: Published on July 23rd, 2014

Mum's campaign to help Sophia walk 6:00am Wednesday 23rd July 2014 in News A MUM is trying to raise 75,000 to send her youngest daughter to the USA for a lifechanging operation. Kayleigh Kilbane, 22, is desperate for her two-year-old daughter Sophia, who has cerebral palsy, to have the surgery, which will allow her to walk without pain. The selective dorsal rhizotomy operation has not been widely available in the UK, as health bosses have to first agree to meet the 24,000 cost. But last week the NHS, which had stopped the operations, announced it would fund 120, to judge how effective they are before continuing with them. Miss Kilbane wants Sophia to have the op at St Louis childrens hospital, in Missouri, which has been doing them for 25 years. She said: I have spoken to a couple of people whose children had operations there and they have done over 2,700 operations and only three had trouble. They have not long been doing it in the UK. She wants Sophia to be able to playwith brother Aiden, five, and Louie, two, without having to be in a standing or sitting frame. Read more here: Mum's campaign to help Sophia … Continue reading

IVF Success Statistics Can Be Misleading

Posted: Published on July 22nd, 2014

A nurse points out the image of a three-month-old fetus during a sonogram scan for Nancy Yin at a clinic in central China's Shaanxi province on Dec. 13, 2010. Image: Ng Han Guan/Associated Press After reading a recent Hard Evidence piece about whether fertility "drops off a cliff" at 35, I feel that some hard evidence about the chance of having a baby with IVF is needed. Some of the figures quoted in the article seem overly optimistic as does reporting on IVF at times and this may be because it is not clear what the denominator is. For example, the statement that "pregnancy rates are fairly stable (30-35%) for each embryo transferred up to the age of 30, but fall to 20% by 40 and are only 5% by 45" warrants examination. IVF treatment involves a number of steps: fertility drugs to develop a number of eggs; retrieving the eggs; adding sperm to the eggs in the hope that embryos develop; and finally an embryo transfer (ET) procedure where an embryo is placed in the uterus in the hope that it will implant and grow into a baby. Unfortunately, there is a risk that things go wrong in each … Continue reading
