Dont allow field trials of GM crops: farmers, activists

Posted: Published on July 22nd, 2014

The recent decision of the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) to allow field trials of GM rice, mustard, cotton, chickpea and brinjal has been met with strong opposition from farmers groups and environmental activists. Seeking the intervention of Union Environment and Forests Minister Prakash Javdekar, the Bhartiya Kisan Union has asked for annulment of the approvals. Questioning the need for release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the fields, the BKU leaders said they were concerned over the nations seed and food sovereignty. This is because most genes as well as transgenic processes are already patented and these Intellectual Property Rights work for the monopolistic benefit of the profiteering multinational corporations. The ease with which a transgenic technology allows corporations to claim ownership rights over seeds makes it attractive to them to hype why the world needs GMOs and seek control over entire food chains from production to marketing jeopardising the livelihood security of farmers, BKU leaders Naresh Tikait, Dharmendra Malik and Yudhveer Singh said in a letter to the Minister. In a separate letter to Mr. Javadekar, the Coalition for GM-free India said the GEAC approvals came at a time the Supreme Court was about to pronounce its orders … Continue reading

The Bristol Post commented Joy as Bristol Children's Hospital to pilot to free surgery to…

Posted: Published on July 22nd, 2014

Sam Rooke, pictured with son Jack FOR years desperate families across Bristol have been raising thousands of pounds to pay for their child to undergo a life-changing operation to help them walk. Some youngsters suffering from cerebral palsy struggle to walk without the surgery. Despite the operation's impressive track record in helping sufferers walk unaided, it has never been available on the NHS But now around 24 children each year, who live in the South West, will be able to undergo the surgery free of charge, thanks to a new pilot. Bristol Children's Hospital has been announced as one of five centres which will evaluate the effectiveness of the operation during a two to three-year programme. The Bristol Post has previously reported on dozens of families who have raised anywhere between 35,000 to 80,000 to pay for the treatment. This procedure involves a neurosurgeon cutting nerves in the spinal cord to reduce the tightness in youngsters' legs. Children, aged between three and 10, who suffer stiffness in their lower limbs, and meet the clinical criteria for treatment, will be able to apply. Sam Rooke, whose five-year-old child Jack underwent the operation in January, said this was 'a step in the … Continue reading

Cleveland Clinic researchers discover neuroprotective role of immune cell

Posted: Published on July 22nd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 22-Jul-2014 Contact: Laura Ambro ambrol@ccf.org 216-636-5876 Cleveland Clinic July 22, 2014, Cleveland: A type of immune cell widely believed to exacerbate chronic adult brain diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis (MS), can actually protect the brain from traumatic brain injury (TBI) and may slow the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, according to Cleveland Clinic research published today in the online journal Nature Communications. The research team, led by Bruce Trapp, PhD, Chair of the Department of Neurosciences at Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute, found that microglia can help synchronize brain firing, which protects the brain from TBI and may help alleviate chronic neurological diseases. They provided the most detailed study and visual evidence of the mechanisms involved in that protection. "Our findings suggest the innate immune system helps protect the brain after injury or during chronic disease, and this role should be further studied," Dr. Trapp said. "We could potentially harness the protective role of microglia to improve prognosis for patients with TBI and delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease, MS, and stroke. The methods we developed will help us further understand mechanisms of neuroprotection." Microglias are primary responders to the brain after injury or during … Continue reading
