Exuberant chemistry student at Indiana University died in Malaysia jet crash

Posted: Published on July 20th, 2014

In Indiana Universitys classrooms, Karlijn Keijzer was known as an intellectual doctoral chemistry student from the Netherlands, who spent long days testing anti-cancer and Alzheimers drugs. In campus sports, she was a feisty and formidable athlete who spent long mornings on the rowing team. But she will always be remembered by her friends for one long festive night when she showed up to a costume party dressed as a giant piece of corn. The 25-year-old student who was back in the Netherlands just for the summer and planned to return to Bloomington in the fall was killed along with the 297 other passengers when their Malaysia Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down over Ukraine. Keijzers boyfriend was also on the plane: Laurens van der Graaff. He was a 29-year-old teacher. Friends said theyd been dating just a year and were madly in love. Photographs online and on Facebook show a young, good-looking couple laughing together, arms around one another, blue eyes glowing. President Obama said Friday that at least one U.S. citizen was killed in the crash: Quinn Lucas Schansman. The victims included 189 Dutch citizens, 44 from Malaysia and 27 from Australia. Other nationalities were … Continue reading

Looking for Home School Families to Test High School Chemistry Laboratory Program

Posted: Published on July 20th, 2014

Ponca City, Oklahoma (PRWEB) July 16, 2014 The home school or on-line learning high school is growing in popularity. Yet, for all the benefits of these approaches, there are some downsides. One of which is the availability of a laboratory component for science courses. The most often mentioned barrier, particularly for chemistry, is the availability of the materials required to conduct the laboratories as they use traditional laboratory type chemicals and/or specialized equipment. Sophic Pursuits, Inc. is working to remove this particular barrier as a chemistry laboratory course does not have to be expensive or require hard to find supplies. Basic laboratory skills can be learned using materials that are found in most kitchens. Discovering Chemistry is currently in the pilot testing phase, with a full release of the materials to be available in the early fall. And, Sophic Pursuits is looking for pilot test families to help with this effort. The laboratory course is designed to accompany any chemistry text or can stand alone. The course is written so that any parent or instructor can us it - whether you have a science background or not. It focuses on basic laboratory skills that the high school student will need … Continue reading

He was 90. Hed been in failing health, his son Chris said. Mr. Ashley retired in 1989 from Oak Harbor High School, where hed taught since 1963. Teaching just came naturally to him, his son said. He taught biology, earth science, and general science. He played recordings of bird calls and expected students to be able to identify 30 of them. He led students on walks to collect and identify leaves. He was popular, said son Chris, a onetime student, as were Mr. Ashleys son Charles and daughter Mary. Most kids enjoyed that class. He made it fun. Mr. Ashleys wife, Virginia, was a popular English and history teacher at Oak Harbor High who later served on the Board of Education. Holiday season … Continue reading
