Family turns to radical treatment to reverse stroke

Posted: Published on July 16th, 2014

A TOOWOOMBA family will soon know if a revolutionary treatment is going to lift the fog shrouding 26-year-old Joel Shepherd's mind. His sister Susan Graham-Ryan will fly with Mr Shepherd, their mum Coralie Graham, brother Kris and one of Mr Shepherd's carers to Los Angeles on Sunday. On Monday, Mr Shepherd is due to undergo reverse stroke treatment, which will hopefully reduce inflammation caused by a brain injury he acquired when he was three-and-a-half years old. Funding the perispinal etanercept treatment has been a huge undertaking. WHAT'S HOT ONLINE "Mum had to get a big remortgage of the house to cover the cost of it," Mrs Graham-Ryan said. But the burden has been eased by community members, some complete strangers, who have generously donated money to help fund the treatment. "It has just been amazing and overwhelming at the same time," Mrs Graham-Ryan said. A drug used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis will be injected into a large blood vessel at the base of Mr Shepherd's neck. He will then be suspended upside down to ensure the drug stays in the area it is intended to repair. Read the rest here: Family turns to radical treatment to reverse stroke … Continue reading

Supported by a $450,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, the The CAREN system will be a critical part of the universitys neuromusculoskeletal, traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder research initiatives involving wounded warriors, warfighters and student veterans, Dr. Quillen said. The system will greatly facilitate our ongoing interdisciplinary research to analyze human mobility and function and to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities by increasing their independence and community reintegration. USF purchased the CAREN system with the support of grant from the National Science Foundation. This system integrates a lot of technologies typically used individually like a split belt treadmill with force-sensing plates, a moveable base and motion capture analysis to really help us better understand how an individual walks and moves in different terrains and environments, said Kyle Reed, PhD, assistant professor of mechanical engineering in the College of Engineering. The CAREN project will bring together more than 20 investigators with expertise in rehabilitation engineering and science from the colleges of Engineering, Medicines School Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Behavioral and Community Sciences, Nursing, and Virtual and Performing Arts. They will collaborate with researchers from James A. Haley Veterans Hospital and Draper … Continue reading

Health Canada warns testosterone therapy may pose cardiovascular risks

Posted: Published on July 16th, 2014

TORONTO -- Health Canada is warning consumers and health-care providers about a potential risk of serious and life-threatening cardiovascular problems linked to testosterone replacement therapy for men. Testosterone replacement products are used in men whose bodies don't make enough of the hormone, causing such effects as flagging libido, low energy, loss of muscle, mood swings and disturbed sleep. A recent Health Canada safety review found a growing body of evidence suggesting that the use of replacement testosterone may pose an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots in the lungs or legs, and heart rhythm irregularities. The federal department says testosterone replacement products should not be used in men for non-specific symptoms if lab tests have not confirmed a low testosterone level, nor should they be used in children under 18 nor in women. Men should advise their doctor of any history of cardiovascular disease or symptoms that might indicate such disease before using testosterone replacement therapy. The agency also says health providers should assess patients for cardiovascular disease risks before prescribing testosterone and closely monitor men who begin hormone replacement. In Canada, 12 testosterone replacement products are approved for sale, including such brand-name products as Androderm, Delatestryl, Androgel … Continue reading

Systemic lupus erythermatosus, often abbreviated to SLE or lupus, is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease (or autoimmune connective tissue disease) that can affect any part of the body. As occurs in other autoimmune diseases, the immune system attacks the bodys cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage.[2] SLE most often harms the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys, and nervous system. The course of the disease is unpredictable, with periods of illness (called flares) alternating with remissions. The disease occurs nine times more often in women than in men, especially women in child-bearing years ages 15 to 35, and is more common in those of non-European descent.[3] [4] [5] In SLE, the bodys immune system produces antibodies against itself, particularly against proteins in the cell nucleus. SLE is triggered by environmental factors that are unknown. All the key components of the immune system are involved in the underlying mechanisms [of SLE] according to Rahman, and SLE is the prototypical autoimmune disease. The immune system must have a balance (homeostasis) between being sensitive enough to protect against infection, and being too sensitive and attacking the bodies own proteins (autoimmunity). From an evolutionary perspective, according to Crow, the … Continue reading
