Real People: Chemistry student finds stress relief with art of oragami

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014

By H.M. Cauley Origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding, certainly demands patience and dexterity. For Suwanee resident Rebecca Gieseking, creating intricate, creased shapes takes even more: Its a challenge to her imagination and science skills. The engineering aspects have always been part of my artwork, said the 24-year-old. I like making connections between a very logical thought process and also being creative. I couldnt design what I do without the artistic and the scientific parts. Gieseking, a Georgia Tech Ph.D candidate in chemistry, first found her passion for origami when she was a child, and by the time she joined the Girl Scouts, she had a favorite model she followed. The hobby made her consider a career in art. In college at Furman University, I double-majored in chemistry and art, but I wasnt doing a lot of origami, said Gieseking. Then I started graduate school in 2010 and didnt have much time to paint anymore, either. But at the end of my first year, one of the worlds leading origami experts came here and talked about the artistic and scientific side of it, and I was drawn back to it. Gieseking began designing avant garde bowls and vases … Continue reading

But now a new home test claims to tell the difference between a fleeting fling and a relationship that could mean a couple live happily ever after, by using a combination of genetic and psychological tests. The kit offers an affordable way to test chemistry and compatibility long before a life-changing commitment is made, between a couple, according to Ontario, Canada-based firm, Instant Chemistry, which devised the tests. Happily ever after? Instant Chemistry, a new home test, … Continue reading

Team chemistry separated World Champions Germany from the rest (Comment: On The Ball)

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014

The last two editions of the FIFA World Cup (2010 and 2014) have clearly brought one key message to the fore -- team cohesion and chemistry. The 2010 winners Spain were predominantly made up of two sides -- Barcelona and Real Madrid -- with more than half the team being constituted of Catalan players. This meant that most of these players were already used to playing with each other, increasing cohesion and chemistry. Barcelona players like Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Pedro, Jordi Alba and Cesc Fabregas were present this year as well meaning that the cohesion was still there but something else was missing as the defending champions were dumped out in the group stages. Spain's biggest problem was age and probably a shot of overconfidence. Most of their top players are on their last legs with their club career also winding down. Xavi, Iker Casillas, Fernando Torres and Andrea Iniesta have without any doubt played their last World Cup and their fitness or lack of it was there to see in the Brazilian heat. The newly crowned 2014 champions Germany, who edged Argentina 1-0 in the final Sunday, had a similar recipe for World Cup glory. Six of … Continue reading

Biotech Falls With Internet Stocks as Fed Cites Stretched Values

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014

Biotechnology and social media stocks slumped as the Federal Reserve said valuations in smaller companies in the industries are substantially stretched. The Nasdaq Biotechnology Index retreated 1.5 percent, the most in a week, and the Global X Social Media Index ETF lost 1.4 percent as of 11:19 a.m. in New York. Facebook Inc. and Pandora Media Inc. slid more than 1 percent. The Russell 2000 Index of small-cap shares fell 0.8 percent. The market just got spooked with the mention of biotechnology and social media stocks, Paul Zemsky, the New York-based head of multi-asset strategies at Voya Investment Management LLC, which oversees $213 billion, said by phone. Were in a new era of macro policy where the Fed is using new tools to prevent bubbles and raising vocal concerns when markets are away from fundamentals. Fed officials have made cautionary statements about valuations for smaller companies already this year. In February, Fed Governor Daniel Tarullo said surging small caps were one reason policy makers should ensure they werent creating systemic risk in financial markets. The Standard & Poors Smallcap 600 Index trades at 26 times reported profit and the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index has a multiple of more than 500, according … Continue reading
