Large Study of Stem Cells for Autism Draws Criticism

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014

Experts say a $15 million trial to explore stem cells from cord blood for treating autism is premature. Cold comfort: Researchers are trying to find out whether stem cells taken from frozen cord blood can improve autism symptoms. Credit:Tbsdy lives via Wikimedia Commons A team at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, is set to launch a $40 million clinical trial to explore stem cells from umbilical cord blood as a treatment for autism. But experts caution that the trial is premature. A $15 million grant from the Marcus Foundation, a philanthropic funding organization based in Atlanta, will bankroll the first two years of the five-year trial, which also plans to test stem cell therapy for stroke and cerebral palsy. The autism arm of the trial aims to enroll 390 children and adults. Joanne Kurtzberg, the trials lead investigator, has extensive experience studying the effectiveness of cord blood transplants for treating various disorders, such as leukemia and sickle cell anemia. Most recently, she showed that cord blood transplants can improve the odds of survival for babies deprived of oxygen at birth. A randomized trial of the approach for this condition is underway. To really sort out if [stem] cells can … Continue reading

Calling out for Asian stem cell donors

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014

In hospital after a relapse of leukemia in May, Mai Duong, a Montrealer of Vietnamese descent, was told by her doctors that she would soon need a stem cell transplant. Finding a match wouldn't be easy, they said, because there is a dearth of compatible Asian donors in Quebec and worldwide. But Duong wasn't content to sit and wait in her hospital bed. "Instead of not doing anything, I told myself this is going to be a fight and this is going to be a fight that everybody is going to know," she said. In a video explaining her situation, Duong said she is having difficulty finding a comparable donor because ethnic groups are under-represented in the international (stem cell donor) registry. It seems we dont give out our stem cells and this is a huge problem. In Quebec, fewer than 0.5 per cent of the 47,000 registered stem cell donors are of Asian descent, Laurent-Paul Mnard, a spokesperson for Hma-Qubec, said. There is no registry in Vietnam. "On the international level, there's a similar problem because we're talking about 1.9 per cent of (Asian) donors in the American registry and 0.9 per cent in the international registry," he added. … Continue reading

Mother died after delaying aggressive cancer treatment 'to have a baby'

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014

She had fought the illness for more than four years, Manchester Coroner's Court was told. Her death came despite undergoing stem cell transplant, and her family believe she would have survived if she had chemotherapy. But they said she would not have been able to become a mother, which she longed for. At the inquest, Dr Jim Cavet, consultant haematologist at Christie Hospital, Manchester, said Mrs Cockx deferred treatment in 2010 and in 2011, when she became pregnant. Dr Cavet met his patient to discuss her treatment plan throughout her pregnancy until she gave birth to Harriet via a C-section. Tests showed that after the birth of her daughter, the cancer had returned, but more aggressively than before. Dr Cavet told how the new mother put her daughters health first throughout, despite being in a pretty bad way after the birth. "Nicola was very concerned for Harriet and her health and was reluctant to have any chemotherapy even then," said Dr Cavet. "She did accept steroids and they dealt with the high levels of calcium but not the underlying myeloma." Mrs Cockx first realised she had a problem in June 2008 when she started limping. VitaThreads LLC Reports Meeting Primary and Secondary Endpoints in Pre-Clinical Studies Demonstrating Effectiveness of …

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014

WORCESTER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--VitaThreads LLC today reported that the VitaSuture Wound Management Systems (VWMS) met a primary endpoint of incisional closure and secondary histological endpoints in pre-clinical in vivo animal studies. The study was conducted in a rat skin incision model system, evaluating the behavior of VWMS in 23 animals over the course of 57 days as compared to currently available sutures. VWMS demonstrated successful closure of evaluated wounds with no device-linked complications, with complete absorption of the suture material within 14 days, and minimal histological evidence of inflammation as compared to controls. Review by a board-certified histopathologist revealed less accompanying fibrosis and inflammation in suture absorption and wound healing than controls. Mechanical testing of VitaSuture demonstrated superior break strength to conventionally employed absorbable sutures by a factor of as much as 2x. Glenn R. Gaudette, PhD1, Associate Professor,Biomedical Engineering, WPI, served as Principal Investigator for the VWMS pre-clinical evaluation commented, "The substantial lack of inflammation of VWMS presents a unique opportunity to reduce common suture complications including scar and granuloma formation while its quick absorption offers a chance for rapid return to native tissue behavior. This is just the beginning as I see the future potential for VitaSuture as an … Continue reading

Stem cell clinics soon to need okay of 3 agencies

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014

The Philippine College of Physicians has called on the public to undergo stem cell therapy treatment only in institutions that have the approval of the following agenciesDepartment of Health, Food and Drug Administration and Professional Regulation Commission. PCP president Dr. Anthony Leachon saidthe three offices have agreed to implement new guidelines as regards stem cell treatment facilities. "Kung hindi maayos ang facilities, hindi ito ma-aprubahan. 'Pag ang produkto ay hindi registered sa FDA, hindi pwede. At pangatlo, kung ang doktor ay hindi siya specialist.... Kapag isa lang doon ang mali, wala na. All or none," Leachon said. He noted that clinics should have a sign in front with a "stamp of approval" from all three. "Huwag ka pumunta doon kung walang stamp," he added. Leachon said that while the DOH evaluated the facilities of clinics, the FDA would check on the medicine to be used. The PRC, he said, would identify whether the doctor that will administer the theraphy is a certified specialist. He also added that doctors should first conduct clinical trials of the services to be offered in the clinic. Excerpt from: Stem cell clinics soon to need okay of 3 agencies … Continue reading

Mom pleased by Missouri's move to legalize cannabis extract

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014

A woman who moved her daughter to Colorado so that she could have access to an epilepsy treatment made from a cannabis extract said she's pleased to hear that the extract will soon be legal in Missouri. Gov. Jay Nixon signed a bill on Monday that will make a type of cannabis oil called CBD available for people who have tried other treatments for epilepsy without success. The oil is low in THC, the chemical that produces the high that people experience from marijuana. Holly Brown's daughter suffers from a type of epilepsy that hasn't responded to other treatments. She said parents in Missouri who have children suffering from the same condition have a lot to look forward to. "She has a rough condition, so she has some really rough days," she said. "They are not near as rough as they used to be, and the good days are significantly better than the good days we had before." Brown said that while she's excited, she can't move back to Missouri because the exact medicine her daughter is taking is still only available in Colorado. Under the new Missouri law, two nonprofit agencies will be licensed to grow the marijuana plants … Continue reading

The Hartwell Foundation has presented an Individual Biomedical Research Award to Professor Judy A. Van de Water of the University of California, Davis, in recognition of research that could affect nearly one in every four cases of autism among children in the U.S. Van de Water, an immunologist and professor of internal medicine in the UC Davis School of Medicine, is one of 11 scientists from throughout the U.S. selected to receive the award that recognizes early-stage, innovative and leading-edge biomedical research with the potential to benefit children in the United States. Van de Water is an autism researcher affiliated with the UC Davis MIND Institute. She is the eighth UC Davis researcher selected for the honor since 2008. Awardees receive $100,000 each year for three years. In 2013, Van de Water described how unique antibodies in the bloodstream of some pregnant mothers target proteins critical to the fetal brain development. The discovery represents the first definitive cause for a subset of cases of non-genetic causes of autism. Van de Water coined the term Maternal Autoantibody-Related (MAR) autism to describe the 23 percent of autism cases associated with maternal autoantibodies. Her research is focused on finding a way to target … Continue reading
