Posted: Published on July 12th, 2014

POSTED: Thursday, July 10, 2014 - 10:25pm UPDATED: Saturday, July 12, 2014 - 9:09pm TYLER, TEXAS (KETK) Autism is an epidemic, 1 in 68 of kids are diagnosed with autism each year in the United States. There are resources in East Texas, but many families do not know where to go for help. The reason why we decided to cover this story of East Texas families facing autism came for an Autism Expo we covered in April. We learned many families were looking for answers and help. We all know behavioral therapy can be expensive. We found alternatives and resources in East Texas that can be of help for families. Autism Network Coordinator Julee Renfroe helps many families with autism. There are many support groups and learning centers in East Texas. Also, Elijahs Retreat in Jacksonville is a Christ-based retreat that Jeff Moore and his late wife Kathie created in honor of their autistic grandson. At the retreat youll find animals such as horses, donkeys, etc. Its a retreat that families can spend there and relate to one another. Animals are used as a form of therapy to control behavioral patterns that come along the autism spectrum. Parents tell us, … Continue reading

Miracle solution can cure autism

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2014

A mother of two children who have autism and aspergers has claimed a US church said its bleach-based "miracle" treatment for serious health problems could cure her sons. Fiona OLeary, from Drimoleague in West Cork, said the remark was made when she contacted the group about this weekends seminar on miracle mineral solution, or MMS which is taking place in Monkstown, Dublin. Speaking to the Irish Examiner, she said she called Genesis II Churchs Reverend Mark Kishon Christopher on Monday about the event. The mother-of-five said Mr Christopher asked her if she was a genuine person seeking advice or from an organisation, before asking her to email the request. When Ms O Leary asked if MMS could really cure autism, she alleges Mr Christopher replied it was not a possibility but a fact a claim also made about numerous conditions on the Genesis II Church website. Ms O Leary was then sent an email, giving directions to the seminar, and asking her for a 295 donation. Mr Christopher did not address the issue when contacted by the Irish Examiner, describing this weekends event as a water purification seminar and saying: MMS is not a health medication, I have never claimed … Continue reading

Missouri psychiatric treatment center for youth closing under state budget woes

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2014

In seventh grade, she dealt with being bullied at school by secretly cutting her body. I thought, This is what the bullies do to me, why dont I do it to myself? said Sarah Boyer, now 17. She spoke last weekend while on leave from the state-run Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo., where she has been getting psychiatric treatment since March. Last month she and others at Cottonwood got the news that the youth psychiatric facility will close because of state budget cuts. Those who track the mental health care industry in Missouri said the closure of the state facility is yet another blow for the mentally ill in Missouri, who are being squeezed out of critical services. Boyer says Cottonwood needs to be saved so it can save kids like her. Her descent into mental illness happened rapidly. At first, Boyer said, the cutting relaxed her. Then she began cutting deeper. That scared her. It made her realize that killing herself could be easy. Yet she kept it a secret. It led to clinical depression and thoughts of suicide. In eighth grade, she let the truth slip. When her parents intervened, she became violent. Her mother, … Continue reading

Ian Thorpe reveals he is gay in Parkinson interview

July 12, 2014, 11:47 p.m. After years of dismissing speculation about his sexuality, Ian Thorpe has revealed he is gay. Thorpe made the admission in a tell-all interview with Sir Michael Parkinson, News Corp reports. The interview, which will air on Sunday night on Channel Ten, has been described by Sir Michael as one he had wanted to do for a long time. Ian Thorpe has always been near the top of my list to interview. The reasons are obvious. Not many athletes can claim to be the best of all time. Ian can." Earlier this year, Thorpe was admitted to a rehabilitation facility to receive treatment for his ongoing battle with depression. Before he retired for the first time at the age of 24, Thorpe broke 22 world records and won five gold and three silver medals and one bronze medal at the Olympic Games. But despite his success in the pool, Thorpe's career has been plagued with persistent rumours about his sexuality. Sir Michael Parkinson and Ian Thorpe shooting the tell-all interview. Group celebrates 20 years of supporting people with brain injuries, their ohana

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2014

On the second Wednesday of the month, they gather to share stories, learn about resources and empower each other. Inside Hawaiian Rehabilitation Services in Kailua-Kona, they freely speak about how they were injured, as well as their progress, breakdowns, breakthroughs and feelings about their new lives. With the help of invited speakers, they find answers to problems from the physical, emotional and cognitive to the bureaucratic that are hindering their independence and community re-entry. Other topics are also discussed, such as creating accessible homes, the healing power of music, vocational training and Hawaiian club swinging. They are survivors, caregivers and advocates. All belong to the Kona Brain Injury Support Group, voluntarily facilitated by certified rehabilitation registered nurse and nurse life care planner Karen Klemme. This summer marks 20 years since the groups inception, which began with a passing comment. In 1994, Klemme was evaluating a Waimea woman in her mid-20s who received a traumatic brain injury during the delivery of her child. Klemme was tasked with identifying and facilitating options and services for meeting the needs of this woman a year after the trauma. Not only was the woman starting to walk and talk, she was going to take care … Continue reading

Madison, MS Residents Are Now Welcome to Visit Drs. Roger B. Parkes and R. Clarke Stewart for Gum Disease Treatment …

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2014

Madison, MS (PRWEB) July 11, 2014 Dr. Roger B. Parkes and R. Clarke Stewart of Periodontal Associates of Jackson, P.A. make it easier than ever before for area residents to treat their persistent gum disease and help prevent bone loss by offering the LANAP protocol, the first laser gum surgery cleared for patient use by the FDA. Patients searching for a periodontist near Madison, MS who may be concerned about traditional scalpel-based periodontal surgery can now have a procedure that restores their gum and bone health without any cuts or stitches and with minimal discomfort. The LANAP treatment utilizes the PerioLase MVP-7 laser which is able to differentiate between diseased and healthy gum tissue. It then essentially vaporizes the infected cells while leaving all others unaffected. This dramatically reduces the impact and pain during any recovery that patients experience. It also retains the maximum amount of healthy gum tissue and stimulates bone regrowth, which are critical to preventing the loss of teeth. Without enough gum and bone to hold them in place, teeth are at risk of extraction. When teeth are missing, the adjacent bone in the jaw no longer receives the stimulation that the natural tooth roots provide. This … Continue reading

MS girl hoped to have been cured of HIV has relapsed

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2014

By MARILYNN MARCHIONE AP Chief Medical Writer A Mississippi girl born with the AIDS virus and in remission for years despite stopping treatment now shows signs that she still harbors HIV - and therefore is not cured. The news is a setback to hopes that very early treatment with powerful HIV drugs might reverse an infection that has seemed permanent once it takes hold. The girl is now nearly 4. As recently as March, doctors had said that she seemed free of HIV despite not having been on AIDS drugs for about two years. That was a medical first. But on Thursday, doctors said tests last week showed that she is no longer in remission. She is now back on treatment and is responding well, doctors said. The news is "obviously disappointing" and may have implications for a federal study that had been about to start testing early, aggressive treatment in such cases, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "We're going to take a good hard look at the study and see if it needs any modifications," either in terms of length and type of treatment or because of ethical concerns over … Continue reading

Edmond woman proclaims new MS treatment a success

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2014

EDMOND Pamela Gooch could not step out of bed on most days. Taking a shower exhausted her. Multiple sclerosis would not allow her to lift her 2-year-old son, Gooch said. On June 2, Gooch underwent an autologous stem cell transplant at Northwestern University in Chicago. Today, her chronic fatigue has vanished. Now I can do that and play with my kids and go to the park and have a picnic, said Gooch, a 41-year-old former Edmond pre-K teacher. MS remains an incurable autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. It occurs when the immune system attacks a persons myelin, a lining that protects nerve fibers. Symptoms of MS depend on where lesions form on the brain, optic nerve or spinal cord. More than 300,000 people in the United States with MS have symptoms ranging from fatigue, incontinence, dizziness, double vision, imbalance, numbness or paralysis, to speech problems and other sensory disorders. Gooch lives with progressive relapsing MS, a rare form of the disease. The pharmaceuticals used to treat MS did not prevent the explosion of brain lesions she had in April. Her right leg began to drag and she could barely walk to her driveway, she said. Her autologous stem … Continue reading
