Posted: Published on July 9th, 2014

Dr. Spivak is a board-certified Neurosurgeon who specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery and stem cell therapies. He has dedicated himself to helping heal your back! Back pain is a major source of pain and suffering throughout America. Almost everyone suffers from back pain at least at least once in his or her lifetime. Back pain can cause depression and cause problems with work and family. There is no reason to prolong your suffering, as many different treatments are available to provide you with back pain relief. The most common cause of back pain is caused by injury to the lower back. Damage to the disks is called Degenerative Disk Disease. Damaged disks can herniate and pinch spinal nerves. This can cause the searing pain in the legs known as sciatica. Sometimes chiropractic treatment or physical therapy will help relieve back pain, but sometimes interventional surgical procedures must be undertaken when a person does not recover after less intensive treatment. There are many types of invasive treatments, some of which can be quite effective but none of them actually repair the damaged disk. Much progress has been made in experimental stem cell treatments that can actually heal the damage that … Continue reading

Stem cell treatment causes nasal growth in woman's back

Posted: Published on July 9th, 2014

A woman in the US has developed a tumour-like growth eight years after a stem cell treatment to cure her paralysis failed. There have been a handful of cases of stem cell treatments causing growths but this appears to be the first in which the treatment was given at a Western hospital as part of an approved clinical trial. At a hospital in Portugal, the unnamed woman, a US citizen, had tissue containing olfactory stem cells taken from her nose and implanted in her spine. The hope was that these cells would develop into neural cells and help repair the nerve damage to the woman's spine. The treatment did not work far from it. Last year the woman, then 28, underwent surgery because of worsening pain at the implant site. The surgeons removed a 3-centimetre-long growth, which was found to be mainly nasal tissue, as well as bits of bone and tiny nerve branches that had not connected with the spinal nerves. The growth wasn't cancerous, but it was secreting a "thick copious mucus-like material", which is probably why it was pressing painfully on her spine, says Brian Dlouhy at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, … Continue reading

Enrile fit, vigorous enough for jailprosecutor

Senator Juan Ponce Enrile at Camp Crame on the way to the PNP Hospital. The Sandiganbayan has ordered Enriles arrest in connection with the plunder and graft cases filed by the Ombudsman. INQUIRER FILE PHOTO/ LEO SABANGAN MANILA, PhilippinesFor the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Senator Juan Ponce Enrile need not be under hospital arrest for his plunder case because the 90-year-old lawmaker seemed healthier after his stem cell treatment. During a hearing at the Sandiganbayan on Tuesday, prosecutor Annielyn Cabelis said Enriles motion for him to be detained at the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital is unfounded and self-serving. Cabelis told the court that even with his age and various illnesses, Enrile is still performing quite well as senator. The prosecutor cited Enriles stem cell treatment as adding strength to the veteran lawmaker. Hes undergone stem cell surgery, adding vigor to the accused. Its not really precarious as what they told the court, Cabelis said. Associate Justice Samuel Martires noted the prosecutors claim that Enrile seemed stronger after the stem cell treatment. The justice then went on to ask the prosecutor if she feels her blood pressure going up when she is arguing with her husband. When the … Continue reading

Stroke patients to benefit as expert targets Southend 8:00am Tuesday 8th July 2014 in News By Christine Sexton PATIENTS at risk of a stroke are set to benefit from pioneering treatments made possible by a collaboration between Southend Hospital and Anglia Ruskin University. Patients suffering the severe and life-threatening effects of a blocked artery in the brain will benefit from new procedures directly removing the blood clot. World renowned Professor Iris Grunwald joined Southend Hospital and Anglia Ruskin University in a dual role six months ago and is leading an international research trial based at the hospital into the benefits of interventional stroke treatment. She said: Southend has a history of excellence within stroke care and is considered one of the best centres in the country. Were now able to offer cutting-edge interventional stroke treatments, such as removal of clots directly from the brain with a minimally invasive technique. The chances of reopening a blocked vessel with this technique are by far higher than just medication alone and it gives us another option to help patients with the most severe strokes. 'Player may have died from unrelated brain bleed'

Posted: Published on July 8th, 2014

Facebook TRAGIC: Jordan Kemp was taken to Auckland hospital after his collapse but never recovered. Northland rugby player Jordan Kemp may have received perfect concussion treatment earlier this year and died from an unrelated brain bleed, a former All Blacks doctor says. The talented hooker collapsed during a game between his Otamatea Hawks side and Old Boys Marist in Whangarei on Saturday. It is believed he suffered a brain bleed after a clash of heads. He died in hospital on Sunday. Kemp had been blue-carded under world-leading concussion rules earlier this season. That meant he had to see a doctor immediately after the game and get medical approval before he played again. He did not play for five weeks after the concussion and Northland Rugby Union chief executive Jeremy Parkinson said he had played for the last six weeks "symptom-free". Graham Paterson, who has worked for more than 25 years in rugby medicine and was the All Blacks' doctor from 2004-05, said there were three possibilities for Jordan's death, but the cause would not be known until after an autopsy. "People can die from a one-off head injury and it might be that the post-mortem shows he's got a brand … Continue reading

Hope for MS sufferers as new treatment is approved for NHS

Posted: Published on July 8th, 2014

Alemtuzumab, also known as Lemtrada, can be used to treat NHS patients after it was ruled to be good value for money, despite a 56,000 price tag. An estimated 9,500 people in Scotland who have the more common relapsing remitting form of MS will become eligible to access the drug following the decision by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC). Scotland has the highest prevalence of MS in the world, with more than 11,000 people living with the condition. Originally developed as a cancer treatment, alemtuzumab has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of relapses, during which patients experience episodes of worsening neurological symptoms over a sustained period. The episodes can last weeks or months, may require hospital treatment and leave lingering health problems. Trials have shown that the drug also slows down progression of physical disability and offers added convenience to patients, who receive five infusions on consecutive days before returning a year later for three more daily doses, rather than an ongoing regime of injections. Dr Belinda Weller, a consultant neurologist at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, said that while patients would continue to be monitored closely, some would never need another alemtuzumab treatment following the … Continue reading

Cannabis medicine allowed for MS patients

Posted: Published on July 8th, 2014

The availability of cannabis-based medicine to relieve one of the main symptoms of multiple sclerosis is about to move a step closer. While regulatory approval has been recommended for around two years, legal changes are needed to allow its use as a treatment for muscle spasms suffered by patients with MS. The progressive, neurological condition affects 8,000 people in Ireland. The Department of Health said it will introduce regulations in the coming weeks which would enable authorised, cannabis-based medical products such as Sativex to be legally prescribed by medical practitioners and used by patients. Sativex is already in use for the relief of spasm symptoms by MS patients in a number of EU countries, including the UK. The availability of this and other cannabis-based treatments have long been sought by support organisation MS Ireland, which welcomed the prospect of revised legislation to allow their use. Ongoing research into the benefits of medicinal cannabis and cannabis-based medication extract for the symptoms of MS has shown the efficacy of such treatments to alleviate spasticity, sleep disorders, pain and other symptoms associated with MS, said chief executive Ava Battles. MS Ireland believes people with MS should have access to all and any appropriate … Continue reading
