Anatomy of American Alcohol Consumption

Posted: Published on July 7th, 2014

Americans are drinking less beer, but more wine and spirits, according to data fromEuromonitor International. The trend, according to the research firms senior alcoholic drinks analyst Spiros Malandrakis, has to do with story as much as substance. Big beer companies have remained pretty complacent in flavor and instead have focused on predictable advertising and discounts to boost sales, he said. (Craft beer, a sector that is known for its innovation in beers flavor, has seen huge growth butonly makes up 8% of the total beer market.) The same old thing isnt doing it for millennials, who are looking for innovation in taste as well as a compelling backstory, Mr. Malandrakis says. Mr. Malandrakis sees innovation in flavored vodkas, but even more successfully in the marketingof Irish Whiskey and American Bourbon. Spirits managed to capture the zeitgeist much better, using prohibition-inspired themes and pop culture, he said. Craft beers, spirits and, to an extent, wine have also managed to capitalize on local movements, in which people want to know where ingredients are coming from and how theyre prepared. Mr. Malandrakis dismisses the idea that the drop in big beer sales has anything to do with calories: Real people dont go out … Continue reading

CT scans take anatomy lessons to a new dimension

Posted: Published on July 7th, 2014

Medical students in Edinburgh will be able to practice dissections using what looks like a giant computer tablet, allowing them to interact by touch with a virtual body. The life-size table, developed by US company Anatomage, has been created from CT scans which allow the body to be seen from front to back, side to side and upside down. Students at Edinburgh University's school of anatomy will be able to use it to investigate the human body by dissecting a virtual cadaver. The device allows students to remove organs, veins, arteries, nerves or tissue by touch, thus enabling them to see how parts relate to one another. The disadvantage of dissection using a real cadaver is that body parts can only be removed. Gordon Findlater, professor of translational anatomy at Edinburgh University, said: "Although it will never, I believe, replace the experience of dissecting and handling a real cadaver, it will allow students to handle a virtual cadaver without all the legislation that accompanies the use of real cadavers. "So far we have received a lot of good feedback from the students and surgeons who have tested it out." In addition to the pre-installed CT and MRI scans, researchers say … Continue reading

Epilepsy Treatments – WebMD – Better information. Better …

Posted: Published on July 7th, 2014

What Are the Treatments for Epilepsy? The majority of epileptic seizures are controlled by medication, particularly anticonvulsant drugs. The type of treatment prescribed will depend on several factors, including the frequency and severity of the seizures and the person's age, overall health, and medical history. An accurate diagnosis of the type of epilepsy is also critical to choosing the best treatment. Drug Therapy My WebMD: A Teen Copes with Epilepsy I had my first real epileptic seizure when I was 5 years old. My mother says my eyes were rolling and I was staring off into the distance. She was terrified. What I had is called a "petit mal" seizure or an "absence" seizure. Its called that because theres a lapse in conscious activity for a couple of seconds. Its different from a "grand mal" seizure, when people have convulsions. Thats what most people think of when they think of epilepsy. A petit mal seizure may not sound like much, but its... Scientists might have just found the brain's 'off switch'

Posted: Published on July 7th, 2014

Next time you go out like a light during class or a boring meeting, you can blame it on the claustrum When the area was stimulated with high frequency electrical impulses, the woman lost consciousness. Her breathing slowed down and she stopped responding to visual and auditory stimuli. When the team stopped the electrical impulses, the patient regained consciousness with no memory of what happened. Koubeissis team repeated the experiment for two days, zapping electrical impulses in the same area and the achieved the same result every time. The claustrum is where it's at Just days before Cricks death in 2004, he was working on a paper that suggested the claustrum would be the perfect candidate for the job. It receives input and projects back from all areas of the cortex, making it very suitable to acting as a conductor to bring the different parts of the consciousness orchestra together. See the article here: Scientists might have just found the brain's 'off switch' … Continue reading

Scientists from the University of Washington discovered that people with a mutation of the CHD8 gene have a 'very strong' likelihood of having autism It is the first time that researchers - from 13 institutions - have linked a definitive cause of autism to a genetic mutation A total of 15 children with the CHD8 mutation shared similar characteristics in appearance as well as problems with sleeping and digesting food When scientists disrupted the CHD8 gene in fish they found they too showed characteristics such as wide-set eyes and problems digesting food Experts believe their study will help uncover hundreds of genetic mutations and lead to genetic testing for the condition By Sarah Griffiths Published: 06:46 EST, 7 July 2014 | Updated: 07:28 EST, 7 July 2014 1,420 shares 116 View comments Scinetists have discovered that people with a mutation of the CHD8 gene have a 'very strong' likelihood of having autism (stock image) Scientists have taken a breakthrough step towards understanding exactly what causes autism.
