Stroke pathways will speed treatment

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2014

A new assessment and treatment pathway will help stroke sufferers get treatment faster in Marlborough. St John, the Nelson Marlborough and West Coast district health boards have worked together to develop a fast track pathway for suspected stroke patients. As soon as St John ambulance officers in Marlborough suspect that a patient has suffered a stroke, they will alert the Emergency Department in Wairau Hospital who will then be ready to receive the patient on arrival and put priority on their assessment and treatment. St John Marlborough territory manager Murray Neal said that if a stroke was suspected, and the patient could be delivered to hospital within 3.5 hours of developing symptoms, they were classified as status 2, or serious. "It's important that they get to definitive treatment as quickly as possible, and that might mean utilising air transport where appropriate, including a rescue helicopter." St John district operations Tasman manager James McMeekin said the stroke pathway was vitally important. Stroke was the third leading cause of death in New Zealand, and 65,000 New Zealanders required significant daily care after suffering a stroke, he said. The pathway begins with ambulance officers assessing a suspected stroke sufferer. "If a stroke is … Continue reading

Rising to the challenge of a stroke

Dave and Brenda Griffin back home in Dunedin. Photo by Linda Robertson. A stroke doesn't have to mean the end of everything Stroke survivor Dave Griffin and his wife Brenda travelled to Los Angeles for treatment that has given his rehabilitation a big boost. Reporter Eileen Goodwin spoke to the couple recently. A Dunedin man thought to be the first New Zealander to undergo innovative stroke treatment in the United States believes it has improved his speech and walking, while reducing fatigue and pain. Dave Griffin (55) and wife Brenda went to Los Angeles for a procedure using etanercept, returning last month. It was not a cure, but had improved his muscle flexibility, and he was now able to walk without dragging his right foot. ''This man hasn't stopped smiling since we got back,'' Mrs Griffin said. The trip home was much easier than the trip there because of Mr Griffin's improved mobility. He had the stroke in December 2012, and the couple just wish he had had the treatment sooner. Mrs Griffin said the treatment put her husband in a good position for further rehabilitation. She believed Mr Griffin was the first New Zealander to receive etanercept for stroke. … Continue reading

The promise and hazards of stem cell research

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2014

Federal funding blocked mainly over opposition to use of blastocysts PORTSMOUTH Dr. Amy Sievers, an oncologist at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, does stem cell transplants with great success for her patients and is a firm advocate for stem cell research. Sievers is allowed to do stem cell blood transplants because she does not use the source of controversy, embryonic stem cells. Instead, she can use stem cells from bone marrow, where blood is made. The cells can become new blood for transfusion into patients with blood-related cancers like leukemia. "When we get past the chemo and radiation, the hope is we can replace blood and give the patient healthy blood and a chance to build a good immune system," Sievers said. Parents saving cord blood when they give birth is an option, but Dr. Alexandra Bonesho of Core Physicians in Epping said it is very costly for the patient, is not covered by insurance and is not something pediatricians recommend widely unless there is a reason. "It's not something we use as a practical course of events," Bonesho said. "Cord blood banking is very expensive, less so if the blood stem cells are donated to the National Cord Blood Bank. In … Continue reading

New stem cell research retracted

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2014

Almost five months after publication, Nature retracted two papers regarding new stem cell research. This retraction came after various errors were spotted, both in the papers presented and the attempted recreations of the experiments described. The research, which claimed that embryonic stem cells could be created by exposing normal skin cells to stress, appeared to be a medical breakthrough at the time of publication. The lead author was found guilty of misconduct, while her employer was threatened numerous times with dismantlement, reports Scientific American. It appeared that parts of the methods were plagiarized from previous studies in the stem cell field, and the supposed 'different' cells and embryos described in the study were actually the same. It was only after recreation of the described methods failed that the errors were brought forth and scrutinized by various outside sources, including one of the co-authors. The Riken Center for Developmental Biology in Japan began in-depth investigations into the studies in February 2014, and categorized some of the major errors that skewed the written results as misconduct, reports Uncover California. Nature released a statement regarding the publication, saying, "The episode has further highlighted flaws in Natures procedures and in the procedures of institutions … Continue reading

Cindy Lange-Kubick: A transgender education, the story of one young man's journey

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2014

The first time we met, Wes Staley wore a hospital gown. The 25-year-old was being prepped for surgery at Village Pointe Aesthetic Surgery in west Omaha. His mom was there and his dad, and his partner, Scott Schneider, whod had the same operation five years earlier. It was a sunny late-winter day and, in a few minutes, Wes would be wheeled into an operating room where a plastic surgeon would remove his nipples, and then his breast tissue, and then reattach his nipples a few centimeters farther apart than they had been before, to replicate a male chest. Then hed sew him back up, leaving crescent moon-shaped scars just above his rib cage. It would be almost as painful as it sounds. The procedure would take less than an hour, and after another hour in recovery, Wes could go home where Scott would take care of him, and Wes would post photos of his progress on Facebook. After all of the questions and post-op instructions, after his parents left the room and huddled in the hallway by boxes of silicone implants while the doctor examined their son, Wes would tuck his short, dark hair under a silver shower cap and … Continue reading
