Chemistry professor earns $1 million grant, set to improve intro classes

Posted: Published on July 3rd, 2014

The 2,000 students expected to take Chemistry 211 next year are in for a surprise. Chemistry Prof. Anne McNeil was recently awarded $1 million from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to improve undergraduate chemistry education for the coming academic year. McNeil is one of 15 science educators to be selected. The institutes stated purpose in funding each educator is to encourage more students to engage with science, math and engineering and maintain American leadership in those fields. McNeil's main focus with the grant will be revamping introductory chemistry courses at the University, namely Chemistry 211, an introductory laboratory course, which she believes are important because theyre required for many science and engineering majors and careers and are often students first experience in a scientific lab setting. McNeil has observed that 37 percent of students changed their course of study after taking introductory chemistry courses, which she attributed to the classs current nature. Chem 211 is a class that mostly freshmen take, either first semester or after they take General Chemistry, she said. The general consensus is that the class is kind of boring and not challenging, because it can be a recap of what students have already learned in high … Continue reading

Texas A&M chemistry professors receive special appointments

Posted: Published on July 3rd, 2014

Four Texas A&M University chemistry professors have been appointed to endowed chairs and professorships within the Department of Chemistry. Franois P. Gabba was named to the A.E. Martell Endowed Chair, established in 1999 in honor of legendary A&M chemist Arthur E. Martell for his contributions as a world-renowned researcher to the field of science and his impact on both faculty and students during the development of A&M's chemistry department, officials said. Daniel Romo has been appointed to the Gradipore Chair in Separation Science, established in 2001 by Australian biotechnology company Gradipore Ltd. to support the separation science program in chemistry at A&M. Sherry J. Yennello has been appointed to the Nuclear Science Chair, established in 2000 through the Bright Matching Chair Fund Program in combination with funds from the College of Science and the Department of Chemistry. Hongcai Joe Zhou was appointed as a Davidson Professor of Science and a joint holder of the Davidson Chair in Science, established in 1981 through a bequest from C.J. Davidson and the C.J. Davidson Family Charitable Foundation to support world-class bioorganic chemists and biosynthetic chemistry research. Barbara Netter and her late husband Edward Netter have been awarded the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy (ASGCT) Distinguished Service Award for their contributions to the field of genetic and cellar therapy. As the founders of Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT), the Netters have helped grant almost $25 million in funding to cancer researchers and physicians worldwide. The award was presented during the 17th annual meeting of the ASGCT May 22, in front of some 1,700 scientists and cancer research advocates. Its an honor to receive this accolade from an organization at the center of our medical community, Ms. Netter said in a statement. Through the work at ACGT and in the cell and gene therapy realm, I have the rare opportunity to see new and optimistic methods of treating cancer unfold. With fantastic breakthroughs in cancer cell and gene therapy occurring more frequently, the future is bright. Founded in 1998, the ASGCT is a non-profit medical organization dedicated to boosting awareness for gene and cell therapies. These therapies have … Continue reading
