Tiny ‘Bio-Bots’ Walk Using Real Muscle Tissue

Posted: Published on July 2nd, 2014

By Devin Coldewey Scientists have long attempted to imitate nature's efficiency and mechanical elegance but this project's minuscule machines are powered by actual living tissue. Rashid Bashir, head of bioengineering at the University of Illinois, leads the effort to build "bio-bots" that use muscle cells culled from rats to get around. The muscle is wrapped around a simple, flexible 3-D printed "skeleton," and stimulated electrically; when the muscle contracts, the tiny contraption takes a "step" forward. The speed can be controlled by the frequency of electrical pulses. You can watch it in action here. "This work represents an important first step in the development and control of biological machines that can be stimulated, trained, or programmed to do work," Bashir said in a news post describing the research, which appeared in the journal PNAS. He envisions such tiny machines working inside human bodies, for instance navigating toward toxins or injuries to administer aid. "This is very promising for medical applications," added co-author and graduate student Ritu Raman. "But why stop there?" YA Novel Anatomy Of A Misfit Stirs Pre-July 4th Fireworks

Posted: Published on July 2nd, 2014

Just when it seemed safe to punch out for the holiday, a hot book has studios in a lather. Im hearing Paramount with Allison Shearmur as producer is in front-runner position and working on a pre-emptive deal for Anatomy Of A Misfit, a novel by Andrea Portes that sources feel has the potential to be a big book. The logline: The third-most-popular girl in school is secretly dating a troubled loner when the most popular guy is suddenly interested in her. She struggles to choose between them until she is faced with a tragedy that changes her entire perception of high school and the social order. Portes based the tale on a story from her own life. Shes a bestselling author who wrote Bury This and Hick, and she will team to write the script with Joel Silverman, who just scripted a film about 1970s Miami Dolphins kicker Garo Yepremian for Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer, and now is adapting for CBS Films Lady In The Locker Room, about one of the pioneer female baseball beat reporters who covered the Oakland As in the 1980s.Anatomy Of A Misfit will be published in the fall by HarperTeen. Cannabis oil available as treatment for children with epilepsy starting today

Posted: Published on July 1st, 2014

SALT LAKE CITY Charlees Law takes effect today. It allows parents of epileptic children in Utah to possess cannabis oil without fear of prosecution. Meanwhile, Primary Childrens Hospital is one step closer to testing it on children with severe epilepsy but needs government approval. Primary hopes the study could lend scientific credibility to what some have called a miraculous extract. Were excited about every treatment, every possibility, said Jennifer May, Co-founder of Hope 4 Children with Epilepsy. A British pharmaceutical company has now agreed to let PCH test Epidiolex children ages 2-17 with severe epilepsy. The drug contains pure cannabidiol oil. Colorado parents say the extract has significantly reduced seizures for some epileptic children. However, since the government puts cannabis in the same category as heroin and LSD, the Drug Enforcement Agency must sign off on the trial. That hasnt happened so its unclear when the study begins. Heres the other hurdle for families interested. The Epidiolex IND [Investigational New Drug] is only going to allow for 25 of the most severe patients and there are many more than that, May said. Cannabis reduced seizures in epileptics, study finds

Posted: Published on July 1st, 2014

Cannabis used for kids epilepsy Promising results from a small study of children who were given an experimental cannabis drug for their hard-to-treat epilepsy has sent shares in its British maker, GW Pharmaceuticals, soaring. The company, which grows cannabis under license at a secret location in Britain, is developing a range of so-called cannabinoid medicines. It already sells Sativex across Europe for spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis. The latest findings for Epidiolex, its new product, come from an assessment of 27 children and young adults with treatment-resistant epilepsy who were given the drug at two U.S. hospitals. The medicine contains cannabinoid elements but none of the psychoactive ingredients that make marijuana smokers high. The pharmaceuticals company said that the results after 12 weeks of therapy in the open-label study showed a reduction in seizure frequency of more than 50 percent. It will begin phases 2 and 3 clinical trials over the second half of the year. Justin Gover, GWs chief executive, said he expected Epidiolex would be ready for submission to U.S. and European regulators in 2016.
