Center for Autism and Related Disorders Introduces Remote Clinical Services Nationwide to Offer Underserved Families …

Posted: Published on July 1st, 2014

Los Angeles (PRWEB) July 01, 2014 Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) today announced the launch of its nationwide Remote Clinical Services program to offer direct services to families in all 50 states. The program was previously available in 15 states, and CARD has now expanded the program nationwide to give all underserved families access to high-quality treatment for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Under this unique program, children can still get top-quality care from a CARD-trained therapist. CARDs highly skilled supervisors travel to families and train local therapists or family members to work directly with the child in the home or out in the community. As the prevalence of ASD has increased, services for children with ASD have not always kept pace with demand. As a result, families affected by ASD may encounter challenges when trying to access quality treatment. According to survey findings from the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs, children with ASD have more unmet needs than children with other special needs. Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), estimates that one in every 68 children in America is diagnosed with ASD. The increase in autism diagnoses and the lack of … Continue reading

More Video... New Guidelines for Treating Heat Stroke Heat Stroke Can Be Deadly if Not Treated Rapidly MGN Online Its finally here -- summer time! But the heat in the summer months can be deadly for athletes, or anyone working outdoors. Mark Beversdorf has been running since he can remember. Now, as an active triathlete, he knows the dangers of working out in the the hot, summer sun, and the potential for heat stroke. "What I notice is I stop sweating, and that's not a good sign," Mark said, "especially when its hot. That means you're really running out of liquid in your body if you stop sweating." The National Athletic Trainer's Association recently released new guidelines to change how athletes and coaches deal with heat stroke. They say everyone involved in athletics needs to know what quick actions to take if someone is showing symptoms. "When you reach the heat stroke part, your skin becomes very warm and very dry, so your body isn't able to compensate anymore so you stop the sweating process," Josh Finke, the EMS Division Chief at the Wausau Fire Department said, "your body isn't able to keep up with the amount of heat your … Continue reading

MS patients to pay up to 400 for crucial drug

Posted: Published on July 1st, 2014

Although Fampridine, known commercially as Fampyra, is not covered by Health Service Executive-funded drug schemes, it has been provided free to patients for the past 2 years under a clinical trial by the manufacturer, Biogen. Photograph: Biogen Multiple sclerosis patients will have to pay up to 400 per month from today for a drug to improve mobility which was previously provided free of charge. Although Fampridine, known commercially as Fampyra, is not covered by Health Service Executive-funded drug schemes, it has been provided free to patients for the past 2 years under a clinical trial by the manufacturer, Biogen. The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland has estimated that the cost of Fampyra, which treats the symptoms of walking impairment in MS sufferers, will be between 225 and 400 per month for each patient. This ongoing cost would be prohibitive for many people with MS who have been receiving the treatment for free up to this point, MS Ireland chief executive Ava Battles said. MS Ireland is calling on the HSE to make Fampyra available to the estimated 8,000 people with MS in Ireland through one of its drugs payment schemes. The drug has not been covered up to now because … Continue reading

Using geometry, researchers coax human embryonic stem cells to organize themselves

Posted: Published on July 1st, 2014

22 hours ago Forty-two hours after they began to differentiate, embryonic cells are clearly segregating into endoderm (red), mesoderm (blue) and ectoderm (black). Researchers say the key to achieving this patterning in culture is confining the colonies geometrically. Credit: Brivanlou Lab, The Rockefeller University About seven days after conception, something remarkable occurs in the clump of cells that will eventually become a new human being. They start to specialize. They take on characteristics that begin to hint at their ultimate fate as part of the skin, brain, muscle or any of the roughly 200 cell types that exist in people, and they start to form distinct layers. Although scientists have studied this process in animals, and have tried to coax human embryonic stem cells into taking shape by flooding them with chemical signals, until now the process has not been successfully replicated in the lab. But researchers led by Ali Brivanlou, Robert and Harriet Heilbrunn Professor and head of the Laboratory of Stem Cell Biology and Molecular Embryology at The Rockefeller University, have done it, and it turns out that the missing ingredient is geometrical, not chemical. "Understanding what happens in this moment, when individual members of this mass of … Continue reading
