Marie Flemings partner welcomes MS cannabis plan

Posted: Published on June 30th, 2014

PLEASED: Tom said he hopes a cannabis-based product will be available to people with MS soon THE partner of a right-to-die campaigner says moves to legalise cannabis treatment for MS sufferers will go a long way to improve their quality of life. Tom Curran, who has been outspoken in the past on the pain-relieving effect that cannabis had on his late partner Marie Fleming, said he is delighted the State is to legalise medicinal cannabis next month. During Maries long battle with multiple sclerosis, Tom grew cannabis to help her with her pain. He said not only did it help with her symptoms, but it also helped to counter some of the side effects of MS. Next month, Junior Health Minister Alex White will sign a ministerial order allowing the Irish Medicines Board and the National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics (NCPE) to assess the likely costs and how the medicine might be promoted. Hopefully, with the legal impediments removed, a cannabis-based medicinal product can soon be available to ease the symptoms of spasticity for people with MS, where other conservative treatments have failed, Minister White said. Sativex, an oral spray made by GW Pharmaceuticals, is credited with treating muscle spasticity in … Continue reading

Treatment plants voluntarily test for microcystin

Posted: Published on June 30th, 2014

Published: Monday, 6/30/2014 - Updated: 10 seconds ago LAKE ERIE ALGAE BLOOMS BY STEPHEN GRUBER-MILLER BLADE STAFF WRITER Lake Eries annual algae blooms can carry harmful toxins into public drinking water treatment plants, but facilities arent specifically required to test for the toxins. To combat the toxins, many water treatment facilities along Lake Eries Western Basin, from Lorain, Ohio, to Monroe, are cooperating with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency by testing voluntarily for microcystin, a toxin in microcystis, the lakes most prevalent form of harmful blue-green algae. Algal blooms are a result of high levels of phosphorous in the water attributed to runoff from agricultural fertilizer, manure, sewage overflows, and septic systems. The toxin can cause breathing problems, skin reactions, and liver damage, and large enough quantities can even be deadly. State code requires that public drinking water systems plan for at least 10 of the most likely emergencies and provide descriptions of response procedures and how to maintain service during those emergencies. But many plants do not list algal toxins among those common emergencies. They get to choose what emergencies to plan for, Dina Pierce, an Ohio EPA spokesman, said to explain why some plants have algae plans in … Continue reading

Stem cells may be more widespread and with greater potential than previously believed

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 30-Jun-2014 Contact: Cody Mooneyhan cmooneyhan@faseb.org 301-634-7104 Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology With the plethora of research and published studies on stem cells over the last decade, many would say that the definition of stem cells is well established and commonly agreed upon. However, a new review article appearing in the July 2014 issue of The FASEB Journal , suggests that scientists have only scratched the surface of understanding the nature, physiology and location of these cells. Specifically, the report suggests that embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells may not be the only source from which all three germ layers in the human body (nerves, liver or heart and blood vessels) can develop. The review article suggests that adult pluripotent stem cells are located throughout the body and are able to become every tissue, provided these cells receive the right instructions. "This study highlights the mutual role of stem cells both for regeneration and in tumor growth by featuring two sides of the same coin: stems cells in cancer and regenerative medicine," said Eckhard Alt, M.D., Ph.D., the article's lead author from the Center for Stem Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Texas MD … Continue reading

San Jose, California (PRWEB) June 30, 2014 Follow us on LinkedIn. The cell culture and tissue market has undergone significant changes and developments over the past two decades. Cell and tissue culture has evolved into a specialized field of science that facilitates artificial growth of cells. Advances in biotechnology and life sciences research coupled with expanding application areas are expected to drive growth in the market. Growth will also be fueled by growing interest in biopharmaceutical therapeutics including biosimilars, human and veterinary vaccines. Increased competition, patent expiries, R&D spends, growing interest in regenerative medicine, and increasing number of protein-based drugs in the final phases of testing will help lend traction to market growth. The cell culture market is currently witnessing a shift from conventional serum-supplemented media to serum-free and animal component free media. With demand for biopharmaceuticals, particularly monoclonal antibodies growing rapidly, there exists significant opportunities in store for mammalian cells that are the preferred hosts for production of complex protein therapeutics. In addition, the development of novel technologies such as automated screening methods, enhanced expression systems, and cell line engineering have resulted in more efficient yields by mammalian cell culture. Increasing adoption of revolutionary 3D cell culture technology is … Continue reading
