San Jose case casts doubts on DNA evidence

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2014

It looked bad for homeless alcoholic Lukis Anderson when DNA evidence tied him to a Silicon Valley millionaire's 2012 murder. But when Anderson's lawyer proved that paramedics who had treated him on the streets of downtown San Jose inadvertently transferred his DNA to the Monte Sereno murder scene, she didn't just clear him. The case is believed to be the first in California and perhaps the nation in which DNA evidence was shown to have falsely placed an innocent person at the scene of a crime, lending credibility to defense lawyers who struggle to convince jurors to view DNA evidence more skeptically. "Before, we just had hypotheticals, stuff that DAs would say was smoke and mirrors," said Deputy Public Defender Kelley Kulick, who handled the groundbreaking case. "Now, there is a case to support it." The scene of the home invasion . in Monte Sereno, Calif., Nov. 30, 2012. (Patrick Tehan/Staff) Among defendants now pointing to Anderson's case in hope of clearing their own names are former Santa Clara County Supervisor George Shirakawa Jr., whose lawyers are challenging felony criminal charges that he was behind a fraudulent campaign mailer allegedly bearing his DNA on the stamp. While others accused of … Continue reading

DNA gives detectives hope: ‘We’re going to solve this case’

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2014

Photo by: Heather Coit/The News-Gazette Investigator Dwayne Roelfs, left, and Lt. Curt Apperson display the large volume of paperwork pulled from the Holly Cassano case. The men were at the Champaign County sheriff's office in Urbana. The killer's DNA is the Holy Grail of the Holly Cassano case. Semen and the killer's blood were recovered from the crime scene. Champaign County sheriff's detectives believe he was likely cut as his hand slid over the hilt of a kitchen-type knife. DNA was extracted from both samples to develop profiles that are unique only to the contributors of that blood and semen. "It's obviously huge and puts us in a good position," said Lt. Curt Apperson, who is supervising detectives investigating the crime. "We feel every day we're going to solve this case." None of the detectives is prepared to adopt one theory of what happened over another, despite the input of an FBI profiler who suggested the killer may have been a white male, possibly a teenager, who may have expressed sexual interest in Holly Cassano and may have been "acquainted" with the mobile home park. Apperson said it's "dangerous" to stick with a single prevailing theory. "You need to keep … Continue reading

I Put My Marriage to the (Genetic) Test

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2014

Jun 27, 2014 1:59pm Maria Pardalis and her family will be featured in an upcoming Nightline Prime piece about Instant Chemistry, a company founded by a group of scientists that uses DNA testing in an effort to measure a couples compatibility. Here, Pardalis offers a first-person account her experience going through the testing process. Watch the full story on Nightline Prime Saturday at 10 p.m. ET. Taso and Maria Pardalis, shown here with their two kids, have been married for five years andistry's DNA compatibility test. Credit: Courtesy Maria Pardalis I always thought my husband, Taso, and I were a good match. We are both driven individuals who are constantly looking to get ahead in life professionally and personally, while ensuring to find the time to have fun and laugh. Never did I begin to question our compatibility until we were approached by ABCs Nightline Prime to partake in a scientific study conducted by Instant Chemistry to test our overall compatibility. As a strong believer that things are meant to be, I was at first skeptical that science is what brought Taso and I together. How could that be? As the founder and CEO of Eventsy, a social club based … Continue reading

Shebbear College opens revamped biology department with a hamster run on the ceiling

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2014

Comments(0) THE pitter-patter of tiny feet can be heard on the ceiling of a rural schools science lab. Shebbear College has a rather unusual hamster run fixed to the ceiling of its revamped science room. Hamsters scurry about the brightly-coloured run which was installed in the biology lab. The lab is also home to an albino milk snake called Pingu. Andrew Colville has been head of biology at Shebbear College for four years. The 20-year-old science lab was renovated last July and he designed the new layout of the room. He said: I designed everything in the room, from the shape and layout of the desks to the position of sinks and gas taps. It was Andrews idea to install the hamster run. He said: It was a crazy idea that I had when I was designing the lab as I had had hamsters before. I wanted them to have space and allow the pupils to observe them and their behaviour. The lab has a menagerie of animals including 18 roborovski hamsters, one Nelsons milk snake, Indian stick insects and fish, including guppies, neon tetras, corys, red phantom tetras and cardinal tetras. Andrew said: It is a biology lab and … Continue reading
