What Is DNA? (with pictures) – wiseGEEK

indigomoth Post 37 @Mor - It's important to note that, while Watson and Crick did put the final finishing touches on what scientists believed to be the shape of DNA, they had a lot of help and were only the very last in a chain of discoveries. They came into the game knowing that DNA was probably composed of two strands and what elements made up those strands and that the gene markers made up the DNA, they weren't the DNA itself. In particular Rosalind Franklin did a lot of work on the DNA structure and discovered that it was made up of two strands before the other two basically used all her work to prove their own theory. She hardly ever gets credit, since they won the Nobel prize, but I think that's a shame because our understanding of DNA sequencing owes a lot more to her than to them. They were right on the verge of a breakthrough when one of them had a dream about a pair of snakes, coiled against each other, one with a head pointed down, the other with the head pointed up. The next day, he realized that if DNA models were arranged … Continue reading

How DNA Works – HowStuffWorks ” Science “

Posted: Published on June 28th, 2014

Like the one ring of power in Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings," deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the master molecule of every cell. It contains vital information that gets passed on to each successive generation. It coordinates the making of itself as well as other molecules (proteins). If it is changed slightly, serious consequences may result. If it is destroyed beyond repair, the cell dies. Changes in the DNA of cells in multicellular organisms produce variations in the characteristics of a species. Over long periods of time, natural selection acts on these variations to evolve or change the species. The presence or absence of DNA evidence at a crime scene could mean the difference between a guilty verdict and an acquittal. DNA is so important that the United States government has spent enormous amounts of money to unravel the sequence of DNA in the human genome in hopes of understanding and finding cures for many genetic diseases. Finally, from the DNA of one cell, we can clone an animal, a plant or perhaps even a human being. But what is DNA? Where is it found? What makes it so special? How does it work? In this article, we will look deep … Continue reading

DNA chimeras help assemble protein nanodevices

Posted: Published on June 28th, 2014

Most nanoscale components today are made by top-down processes, like lithography, where smaller structures are created from a larger starting block. Such techniques are routinely employed in the semiconductor industry but the goal of nanotechnology is to build tiny devices from the bottom up, which is much more challenging. Researchers in Germany have now shown that their "single-molecule cut-and-paste" technique can be used to make protein-DNA chimeras for such nano-assembly and to study the fundamental behaviour of biomolecules such as proteins. In 2008, Hermann Gaub and colleagues at the University of Munich developed a single-molecule cut-and-paste (SMC&P) technique that involves using an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip to pick up "sticky" DNA molecules, which bind only selectively to certain other complementary DNA molecules. The AFM works rather like a nanocrane that lifts up biomolecules, just like a normal, everyday crane lifts up life-sized objects. The molecules can then be brought to a target construction site, where they may be arranged at will. In recent years, the researchers have considerably improved their method and can now even use it to transport DNA-coupled proteins, which are complex molecules. Such protein-DNA chimeras, as they are known, are also very useful in immunobiology applications … Continue reading

Sex offender linked by DNA to 1980 slaying pleads guilty

Posted: Published on June 28th, 2014

Originally published June 26, 2014 at 8:43 PM | Page modified June 26, 2014 at 9:12 PM For friends and family of Susan Lowe, Thursdays guilty plea by a violent sex offender finally offered the answer that has eluded them for 34 years. Michael Allan Halgren, 58, who has been committed as a violent sexual predator for the past 12 years, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, admitting he strangled Lowe in her Bellevue apartment in 1980. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison when he is sentenced July 18. Lowes roommate, Diane Dietz, discovered her body on April 24, 1980. She said the slaying was a horrible lightning bolt out of the blue and she has long wondered who would kill her friend. I finally have an idea of what happened. Up until this day it was inexplicable, Dietz said by phone from her office in Eugene, Ore., on Thursday. I had to learn to put one foot in front of another, raise a family and have a career. Although a reward was offered for information on Lowes killer, the case went cold until 2012, when scientists from the Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory matched DNA found in … Continue reading
