Trinity institute raises 36 million for research

Posted: Published on June 27th, 2014

More than 500 researchers are based at the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute The Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute (TBSI) has created 119 jobs for researchers over the past two years and partnered with 76 companies to undertake research in a number of areas. The Pearse-Street based institute, which houses a Centre of Cancer Drug Discovery, an Immunology Research Centre and a Centre for Bioengineering and Medical Device Technologies, also said it had raised 36 million for interdisciplinary research. In a progress report issued on Friday, the institute, which employs more than 500 researchers, said three-spin out companies involved in drug discovery and development, and cancer treatment had also been established since it opened in 2011. The institute said researchers had published seven articles about breakthroughs in areas such as inflammatory diseases and membrane proteins in the scientific journal Nature over the past two years. TBSI is an excellent example of the kind of scientific and economic impact that can be achieved when we match great researchers with great facilities, and support them with investment drawn from public and private sources, said Prof Vinny Cahill, Trinitys Dean of Research. Tony Cenicola/The New York Times Some of over one million photographs owned by Dr. Stanley Burns, who collects images of medical history and what he calls "the darker side of life," in New York, June 12, 2014. Burns is a contributor to the first exhibition at the Morbid Anatomy Museum, w There will be a ribbon-cutting on the stylish black facade, a "spirit photo booth" and traditional mourning foods, prepared from a cookbook called "Death Warmed Over." But the museum's broader mission - showcasing aspects of culture we might wish to dismiss as morbid or marginal - is deeply (if not deathly) serious, Joanna Ebenstein, its creative director and animating spirit, said recently. "I want people to walk in and say: 'Wow, this is really interesting. Why don't we know about that? And what does it say about us today that we don't know about it?' " she said. The nonprofit museum grew out of the Morbid Anatomy Library, Ebenstein's private collection of more than 2,000 books on medical history, death rituals, the human body and esoterica that was housed until recently in a tiny room tucked away in an alley. From that modest space, Morbid Anatomy has grown into … Continue reading

The award, established in 2014, is designed to stimulate, strengthen and accelerate research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of retinitis pigmentosa, a group of genetic disorders that affect the retinas ability to respond to light. The inherited disease causes a slow loss of vision that eventually results in blindness. This award will allow one of the top researchers in the country to continue investigating the understanding of retinal diseases that lead to blindness, said Randall J. Olson, M.D., CEO of the University of Utahs John A. Moran Eye Center. Dr.Baehrs work has already had far-reaching impacts for bettering the visual health of people around the world and this generous grant from Research to Prevent Blindness will allow him to continue uncovering important discoveries, said Olson.
