Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Research to Prevent Blindness, a New York-based foundation, has announced that University of Utah researcher Wolfgang Baehr, Ph.D., will receive the Nelson Trust Award for Retinitis Pigmentosaand an accompanying $100,000 to pursue new scientific leads to understand contributors to blindness. The award, established in 2014, is designed to stimulate, strengthen and accelerate research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of retinitis pigmentosa, a group of genetic disorders that affect the retinas ability to respond to light. The inherited disease causes a slow loss of vision that eventually results in blindness. This award will allow one of the top researchers in the country to continue investigating the understanding of retinal diseases that lead to blindness, said Randall J. Olson, M.D., CEO of the University of Utahs John A. Moran Eye Center. Dr.Baehrs work has already had far-reaching impacts for bettering the visual health of people around the world and this generous grant from Research to Prevent Blindness will allow him to continue uncovering important discoveries, said Olson. Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campell getting stem-cell transplant

Posted: Published on June 26th, 2014

Vivian Campbell, the guitarist for Def Leppard and former guitarist for Ronnie James Dio and Whitesnake, was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma. He plans on receiving a stem-cell transplant after a summer tour with Kiss. In an interview with the Daily Herald Campbell said that he has been battling the disease since last year with a high-tech chemo treatment. At least I have health insurance, he joked with the Herald. He also stated his best form of therapy has been playing on stage every night. According to Cancer Center, Campbells high-dose chemotherapy is the first step. Stem-cells are taken from the patients body blood, harvested, frozen and then stored until the chemotherapy is finished. The stem-cells are then given back to the patient intravenously, to travel to the bone marrow and produce healthy new blood cells. Def Leppard will be out on tour with Kiss all summer long. The 42-date outing began on Monday in Utah, and will make its way through the West coast, mid-west, then East coast. The tour will conclude in Texas on Aug. 31. Researchers Find Link To Failing Heart In Muscular Dystrophy

Posted: Published on June 26th, 2014

In a world first, researchers at The University of Western Australia have discovered a communication breakdown may be responsible for causing heart failure in people with muscular dystrophy. According to a study, mice that lacked the protein dystrophin had impaired functional communication between a calcium channel in the muscle cell membrane and the mitochondria that are responsible for producing the energy. Its understood that the hearts of muscular dystrophy patients fail but the mechanisms are unknown. It has also been previously reported that a lack of the protein dystrophin (responsible for muscular dystrophy) alters calcium channel function. In the latest study the researchers have identified a link between the channel and the mitochondria that involves dystrophin. In muscular dystrophy the functional communication between the channel and the mitochondria is impaired. We had previously shown that the L-type calcium channel could alter metabolic activity in the heart, Lead author Professor Livia Hool, explained. The L-type calcium channel is widely recognised as being important for regulating the heart beat and contraction. We had demonstrated an additional role for the channel in regulating metabolic activity. This involved altered calcium influx but part of the response also involved proteins that maintain cell structure. This … Continue reading

4.8m settlement for girl with cerebal palsy

Posted: Published on June 26th, 2014

Thursday 26 June 2014 23.45 An eight-year-old girl with cerebral palsy has settled for 4.85m in her action for damages over injuries sustained at her birth. The latest and final settlement in the case of Kate Murphy from Co Tipperary brings to a total of 6.5m paid out to the little girl who suffered brain injuries. Three years ago South Tipperary General Hospital apologised before the High Court over failings resulting in serious brain injuries to Kate when she was born in 2005. Approving the latest settlement Mr Justice Kevin Cross yesterday said to bring finality to the situation was in his personal opinion preferable to numerous applications in stages to the court. The judge said it was a very good thing for Kate and her family that the matter has been settled. "It is a prudent and wise settlement of the matter," Mr Justice Cross said. The court previously heard the Murphy family wanted to finalise the legal action with a lump sum payment rather than return to court for interim payments every few years. In 2011 Kate received a 1.3m interim payment and another 400,000 at a later stage. Through her mother Sarah Murphy, The Valley, Fethard, Co … Continue reading
