Conditions in adults thought of as childhood diseases

Posted: Published on June 25th, 2014

There are a number of conditions that are commonly thought of as childhood disorders that can either begin in childhood and extend into adulthood or even start in adolescence or adulthood. These include muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, fragile X syndrome and attention deficit disorders. Fragile X syndrome is typically a condition mostly, but not exclusively, affects young boys with variable symptoms of learning disabilities, intellectual impairment, autism, unsteadiness, tremor and seizures. The problem is with a chromosome that produces abnormal amounts of RNA. Mild cases can be virtually asymptomatic. More severe cases can show some of the above symptoms in addition to seizures, mood instability, aggression, ovarian insufficiency, fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism and neuropathy. In adults there are physical features associated with this including a long face, prominent earlobes, high arched palate, mitral valve prolapse, dilated aortic arch, flat feet, excessively flexible finger joints, soft velvet -like skin and large testicles. There is no specific treatment for fragile X syndrome but a number of medications can help the symptoms including mood stabilizers, medications for memory; hypertension which can be present and can be treated, and educational programs for autism and attention deficit. Muscular dystrophy is typically thought of as a pediatric disorder … Continue reading

Doctors take on 20-year-old woman's parents in CPR debate

Posted: Published on June 25th, 2014

A 20-year-old woman fighting for her life in a Midlands hospital will have her fate decided by the Court of Protection after doctors claimed she should be allowed to die. The woman, who cannot be named, suffers from a host of problems including a severe learning disability, severe cerebral palsy and severe curvature of the spine. Known only as AB, she also has type 2 diabetes, epilepsy and recurrent respiratory tract infections. Currently in a critical care unit run by Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, her doctors believe she should not be given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The woman's parents do not support the withdrawal of treatment, a judge has heard. Medics believe it is not 'in the best interests' of AB to give her invasive ventilation, CPR or inotropes and renal support therapy, should the need arise. Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust have therefore asked the Court of Protection to rule on the matter. Yesterday, Mrs Justice Theis was given an outline of the case at a preliminary hearing at the Court of Protection, where judges analyse cases involving sick and vulnerable people, in London. She ordered the woman to be kept in a critical care … Continue reading

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Announces Fetal Neuroprotection Program

Posted: Published on June 25th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Philadelphia, June 25, 2014 The Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) today launched the Fetal Neuroprotection and Neuroplasticity Program. Building on growing evidence of the interaction of heart disease and brain development in the fetus, this Program will systematically investigate innovative therapies to protect brain development and to prevent brain injury as early as possible before birth. A joint project of the Hospitals Cardiac Center, the Fetal Heart Program, the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment, and the Division of Neurology, it is the first-ever comprehensive program dedicated to prenatal neuroprotection. Unparalleled expertise from many of CHOPs divisions including the Cardiac Center, Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment, Neonatology and Radiology makes this program truly unique. While this program will initially focus on the fetus with congenital heart disease, it will expand in the future to include fetuses with other birth defects, such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and pulmonary hypoplasia. In the U.S., approximately one in every 120 newborns is diagnosed with congenital heart disease (CHD), making it the most common birth defect. Many newborns with CHD require either corrective or palliative open-heart surgery. As recently as the 1960s, only 20 percent … Continue reading

Brain Injury Association of America Applauds Reauthorization of TBI Act

Posted: Published on June 25th, 2014

Vienna, VA (PRWEB) June 25, 2014 The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) today applauded the passage of H.R. 1098, the Traumatic Brain Injury Reauthorization (TBI) Act of 2013, by the United States House of Representatives. The bill was passed unanimously in a voice vote on the evening of June 24, 2014. Approximately 2.5 million Americans experience TBI each year and an estimated 5.3 million Americans are living with long-term, severe disabilities as a result of brain injury. Today is a great day for people with brain injuries, and I applaud the members of the House of Representatives for taking action and reauthorizing this important piece of legislation, said Susan Connors, BIAAs president and CEO. I would also like to thank Representatives Bill Pascrell, Jr. and Tom Rooney for their work through the Congressional Brain Injury Task Force, and to thank all of our grassroots advocates, without whom this would not have been possible. Originally passed in 1996 and reauthorized in 2000 and 2008, the TBI Act represents a foundation for coordinated and balanced public policy in prevention, education, research, and community living for people with TBI. The TBI Act specifically allocates federal funds for programs supporting individuals with brain … Continue reading

Researchers find gene critical for development of brain motor center

Posted: Published on June 25th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 20-Jun-2014 Contact: Paddy Moore padmoore@ohri.ca 613-737-8899 x73687 Ottawa Hospital Research Institute Ottawa June 20, 2014 In a report published today in Nature Communications, an Ottawa-led team of researchers describe the role of a specific gene, called Snf2h, in the development of the cerebellum. Snf2h is required for the proper development of a healthy cerebellum, a master control centre in the brain for balance, fine motor control and complex physical movements. Athletes and artists perform their extraordinary feats relying on the cerebellum. As well, the cerebellum is critical for the everyday tasks and activities that we perform, such as walking, eating and driving a car. By removing Snf2h, researchers found that the cerebellum was smaller than normal, and balance and refined movements were compromised. Led by Dr. David Picketts, a senior scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, the team describes the Snf2h gene, which is found in our brain's neural stem cells and functions as a master regulator. When they removed this gene early on in a mouse's development, its cerebellum only grew to one-third the normal size. It also had difficulty walking, balancing and … Continue reading

Restoring thyroid hormones in heart may prevent heart disease from diabetes

Posted: Published on June 25th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 25-Jun-2014 Contact: Elaine Iandoli eiandoli@nyit.edu 516-686-4013 New York Institute of Technology Old Westbury, N.Y. (June 25, 2014) Administering low doses of a thyroid hormone to rats with diabetes helps restore hormone levels in their hearts and prevented deterioration of heart function and pathology, according to a new study by NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine professor A. Martin Gerdes. The study, published in the online edition of Molecular Medicine provides the first clear indication that low thyroid hormone levels in cardiac tissue of diabetic individuals may be the major cause of their associated heart disease, says Gerdes. The study finds that diabetes triggers low thyroid levels that contribute to heart failure. In animal models, Gerdes and colleagues found that administering low doses of the active form of thyroid hormone, T3, prevented the progression of heart disease. "This treatment prevented the abnormal changes in gene expression, tissue pathology, and heart function," said Gerdes. The most recent study builds on a growing body of research by Gerdes and others that links low thyroid hormone levels in heart tissue to heart failure. The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American Diabetes Association. Previous studies have demonstrated … Continue reading
