Umbilical cord blood helps to save lives

Posted: Published on June 23rd, 2014

SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- In the 1970's, researchers discovered that a newborn's umbilical cord blood contained special stem cells that could help fight certain diseases. More than 30 years later doctors are still experimenting and learning more about the use of cord blood. Amanda Canale doesn't take time with her daughter and niece for granted. She's just happy to feel good. "I've been in the hospital, and I've been sick my whole life," said Amanda. Amanda was born with a rare blood disorder that required daily shots. "Basically, I have no white blood cells. I have no immune system at all," said Amanda At 23 she developed Leukemia and was given two weeks to live. She desperately needed a Bone Marrow Transplant, but family members weren't matches. Her doctor suggested an Umbilical Cord Blood Transplant. Windows bug-testing software cracks stem cell programs

Posted: Published on June 23rd, 2014

SOFTWARE used to keep bugs out of Microsoft Windows programs has begun shedding light on one of the big questions in modern science: how stem cells decide what type of tissue to become. Not only do the results reveal that cellular decision-making is nowhere near as complicated as expected, they also raise hopes that the software could become a key tool in regenerative medicine. "It is a sign of the convergence between carbon and silicon-based life," says Chris Mason, a regenerative medicine specialist at University College London. "World-class stem cell scientists and a world-class computer company have found common ground. It is work at such interfaces that brings the big breakthroughs." Stem cells are the putty from which all tissues of the body are made. That means they have the potential to repair damaged tissue and even grow into new organs. Embryonic stem cells hold particular promise as they can either renew themselves indefinitely or differentiate into any kind of cell in the body a property known as pluripotency. The process that sets a stem cell on the path to either self-renewal or differentiation was thought to be a highly complex web of genetic and environmental interactions. That web is … Continue reading

IVF treatment to be offered to York couples on NHS

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2014

IVF treatment to be offered to York couples on NHS 11:10am Friday 20th June 2014 in News By Mike Laycock, Chief reporter CAMPAIGNERS have hailed a decision to give York couples one cycle of IVF treatment on the NHS, bringing the area into line with the rest of the UK. The NHS Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) Governing Body said yesterday it had agreed a criteria for treatment for couples. The group was previously the only one in the country not to offer a single cycle of the fertility treatment after Scarborough and Ryedale voted last month to reintroduce it. Karen Boardman, 34, of Heworth, York, who has been trying to conceive since she married her husband Pete three years ago, and has spoken out previously about the issue, said yesterday: Its absolutely excellent news. Its a really positive step forward, although I had hoped they might offer two cycles. She revealed that after undergoing fertility treatment, she had just been told she needed IVF and it was possible the decision might benefit her in time. York Outer MP Julian Sturdy said he was absolutely delighted, adding: Despite inheriting massive debts from the old Primary Care Trust and … Continue reading

Photo - http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20140611/117211 The new service, which originated on the Sunshine Coast, has been expanding and now offers some of the services in Bundaberg. The service has been available since March 2014 and is accessible at Fertility Solutions' Bundaberg clinic located at 89 Woongarra Street. "Affordable IVF on the Sunshine Coast has been a great resource for couples who otherwise would not be able to start their family, due to the high cost of full service fertility treatment," said clinic director Denise Donati. "We've decided to expand the service, so that couples in Maryborough, the Fraser Coast, and the Wide Bay Burnett regions could take advantage of the services." Donati says that having access to affordable IVF and ICSI treatment services can be the deciding factor in whether couples are able to pursue their dream of having a baby. "Demand for low cost fertility treatment is growing," Donati added. "To make it easier, … Continue reading

A father’s gift

Going solo: Katie Elfar with her sons Oscar, 5, and Beau, who was born in February, three years after his father, Karim, died of cancer. Photo: Edwina Pickles When Katie Elfar's partner Karim was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2009, she was devastated. Not only did she have to confront the loss of her partner but the couple's first child, Oscar, was just two weeks old. Her dreams for the future - a large, happy, rowdy family - were shattered. But before doctors began aggressive treatment on Karim's cancer, the couple attended an in-vitro fertilisation clinic in Sydney. The couple had decided to conceive a second baby with Karim's frozen sperm. IVF technology, which was first used successfully in the late 1970s, is not just for couples struggling with infertility. As long as a man consents, Australian law recognises a woman's right to have her dead partner's baby. "I knew with all the treatment he wasn't going to be able to conceive naturally, even if he survived," says Katie. "He was happy because he knew what our plans were. [The first time] I fell pregnant naturally within a minute. So I thought it would be easy." Advertisement It wasn't. Seven … Continue reading

Ancient Human-Chimp Link Pushed Back Millions of Years

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2014

Humanity's genetic split from an ape-like ancestor came about 13 million years ago, far earlier than the long-supposed era of a common ancestor of early humans and apes, suggests a first study of chimp gene mutations. Along with shining a new genetic light on human origins, the findings published on Thursday in the journal Science point to the role that evolution plays in fostering mutations, some linked to inherited diseases, in our genes. On the surface, this and other recent studies contradict the general consensus suggested by the fossil record: that the last common ancestor of the two species, a flat-footed ape, lived some seven million years ago. But both observations could still be true, said paleoanthropologist John Hawks of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, who was not involved in the new study. The ape-like common ancestor species might have endured until 7 to 10 million years ago, long after the genetic split between chimps and humans, he said. That would largely explain the difference seen between gene-based and fossil-based estimates of the date the species diverged. "We also don't know if mutation rates varied widely in the ancient past; maybe they were different than now," says study senior author … Continue reading
