How the rich try to buy eternal youth

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2014

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) The best kind of anti-aging treatment is inside ones own body, and the rich are taking advantage of it, exploring the latest research in new technologies, genome mapping and stem cell treatments. Among them is Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison, a large investor of the Ellison Medical Foundation, which supports research exploring the biology that underlies aging and age-related diseases. And theres billionaire Peter Nygrd, who says he wants to live forever (or die trying), and has suggested hes found the keys to immortality in stem cell research. Some doctors agree that stem cells are a key part of chasing youth. If youre a wealthy guy and havent stored your stem cells, I think youre a total idiot, said Dr. Lionel Bissoon, a New York City physician who sees a number of stressed out, wealthy patients. They usually come to him with similar problems: Fatigue, belly fat, erectile dysfunction, tiring very quickly all very common with my patients from Wall Street, Bissoon said. The short-term solution to those ailments, he says, is testosterone replacement which is relatively affordable at a few hundred dollars a pop and IV nutrition. Isis testing safety of a new myotonic muscular dystrophy drug that targets toxic RNA

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2014

US Isis Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ISIS) said yesterday it had started a Phase I trial of ISIS-DMPKRx, designed to lower the production of toxic dystrophia myotonica-protein kinase (DMPK) RNA in cells, including muscle cells, as a treatment for myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1). The company will get a milestone payment of USD 14 million (EUR 10.3m) from Biogen Idec for reaching this milestone. C. Frank Bennett, Isis senior vice president of research, said that ISIS-DMPK Rx is the first compound in the company's pipeline designed to target a toxic RNA, the first systemically administered drug to go into development from the partnerships with Biogen Idec and the second generation 2.5 drug to start clinical development. DM1, affecting some 150,000 people in the United States, Europe and Japan, is a rare genetic neuromuscular disease distinguished by progressive muscle atrophy, weakness and muscle spasms. DM1 is the most common form of muscular dystrophy in adults. DM1 patients have a genetic defect in their DMPK gene in which a sequence of three nucleotides repeats extensively, resulting in an abnormally long toxic RNA, which accumulates in the nucleus of cells and prevents the production of proteins necessary for normal cellular function. ISIS-DMPKRx is designed to … Continue reading

LMH receives $282,898 grant for stroke technology

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2014

While several states are in whats called the stroke belt, the Coastal Plain is considered the buckle. Lenoir Memorial Hospital has received a $282,898 grant to take steps to become a designated primary stroke center, complete with robotic technology. The Duke Endowment grant will be used to develop a comprehensive program that will stabilize and treat stroke patients, including initial acute care. The program will include prevention, treatment and post-care follow-up. Time is a crucial factor in being able to treat stroke patients successfully, said Constance Hengel, LMHs director of Community Programming and Development. Death rates from stroke in Eastern North Carolina are among the highest in the state and nation so better stroke outcomes are the goal in this intervention, she said. Rapid recognition of stroke and reduction of time from event to treatment will be a major focus in the project. Time is brain and every minute counts for someone having a stroke. Hengel said the grant will allow the hospital to approach strokes in a different way, work collaboratively with state and community partners and participate in statewide databases to connect with resources and measure success. Funding will also provide the use of a telestroke robot which … Continue reading

Ihor lies on a bed during a therapy session last month in Boston. Ihor Lakatosh struggles to describe his life before the surgeries, when his severe burns went untreated for years in his native Ukraine, leaving him with one arm fused to his body, unable to walk and abandoned by his mother. The 11-year-old boy, however, smiles widely and makes the sign of the cross when he describes how he feels now, after a series of surgeries and physical therapy at a Boston charity hospital. "Thank you, I can walk. Thank you, I can walk. Thank you, Lord, I can walk," he said recently through an interpreter. Ihor returned to Boston this year for a second round of procedures and has been showing off his newfound ability to walk, take off his jacket and climb onto a bed. No one knows the details of the fire that burned 30 percent of Ihor's body when he was about 3. He was severely malnourished and unable to walk or bend his arms when neighbors in Lviv, Ukraine, urged his mother to take him to a hospital in 2011, doctors said. She did, and she never came back. The hospital provided minor care. … Continue reading

Ada When William Duncans youngest son suffered a brain injury in a 1998 training accident, he retreated to his bedroom and lived in the dark for the next two years. Duncan said he walked by his sons room one night, and his son asked to talk to him for a minute. Duncans son said that he couldnt hold down a job, which meant he couldnt find a girlfriend, get married or have children. Duncan said his son had decided to kill himself, but he didnt want his mother to find him. So Duncans son asked his father to take care of him. The sons cry for help prompted Duncan to seek a way to treat the injury, which led him to a doctor who had successfully used hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat people who had suffered strokes or traumatic brain injuries. Based on the doctors track record, Duncan decided that the therapy might help his son. Duncan said he sent his son to a New Orleans hospital for treatment, which lasted for a month. Audit Of Reno VA Paints Critical Picture

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2014

RENO, NV - The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has released an audit of the Reno Veterans Affairs Regional Office (VARO). The OIG team focused on disability evaluations and claims, traumatic brain injury claims, and special monthly benefits among other components. Throughout the inspection, reports were inaccurate, insufficient, incomplete and untimely according to the OIG. The report states VARO did not process 51 percent of disability claims reviewed. Compliance was not met in some instances and because of that the Veterans Business Administration (VBA) may have paid inaccurate financial benefits. VARO staff delayed completion of 50 percent of benefit reduction cases due to management not prioritizing the cases. 22 of 29 temporary 100 percent disability evaluations were inaccurate and VARO staff incorrectly processed a number of traumatic brain injury claims by using insufficient medical reports. VARO management and staff were to blame according to IOG. The VBA policy requires a temporary 100 percent disability following surgery or when treatment is needed. After treatment, VARO staff must request a follow-up examination to determine if the veteran's treatment will continue. Due to management oversight, the VA overpaid 15 veterans with 76 payments totaling $98,133. The payments occurred between December 2012 to … Continue reading
