Posted: Published on June 13th, 2014

(Toledo News Now) - Two brothers are back home after their grueling, yet amazing 40-mile walk to raise awareness of cerebral palsy. It took two days, but the benefits could last for years. 14 year-old Hunter said it was so tough, he didn't think he could carry his 7-year-old brother on his back the entire way. But they got through it with support and prayers and continue to inspire people all over the country. Hunter carried Braden on his back as they began their journey Saturday May 7 morning, leaving from Hunter's school at Bedford Junior High. Braden was born with cerebral palsy, leaving him unable to walk on his own. Big brother carried him about 26 miles. By Sunday, the physical demands really started taking their toll on the boys. Braden was suffering from chaffing on his legs but a physical therapist was with them and helped them through. They finished the last 14-miles and had a big final moment when the boys reached the end at the University of Michigan's wrestling center. Braden reached up and touched the banner welcoming them in. "When it was hard, I'm like, we're going to do this but it's sore. We kept … Continue reading

Stemcell doctor facing possible disciplinary action

Posted: Published on June 13th, 2014

Suspicions of fraud for offering Stamina, a 'dangerous drug' (ANSA) - Rome, June 12 - A Brescia-area physician helming a controversial stem-cell treatment faces possible disciplinary action for suspicions of fraud, the supreme Cassation Court said Thursday. Prosecutors in Turin are investigating Mario Andolina, vice-president of the Stamina Foundation, for fraud and issuing a dangerous drug, following a complaint by Lombardy region Health chief Mario Mantovani. The action taken Thursday by Cassation prosecutor Gianfranco Ciani should verify whether or not disciplinary action is warranted. Andolina and the Stamina Foundation have long been front and center in Italian news for their alternative medical therapy for neurodegenerative diseases. Stamina's credibility is considered suspect, and last fall the health ministry ruled that the Stamina Foundation would no longer be allowed to test the treatment on humans. The foundation was also stripped of its non-profit status after a study found its treatment was "ignorant of stem-cell biology". Recent investigations have shown risks of the treatment range from nausea to cancer, and as many as one quarter of all patients treated have experienced "adverse effects". Foundation head Davide Vannoni, may also face indictment. But support from some patients who have used or requested the treatment … Continue reading

Military Families Press For Increased Coverage Of Autism Treatment

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2014

As an infant, Cody Kapacziewski hit all his developmental milestones except those relating to language. "He didn't babble much,'' recalled his mother, Kimberly Kapacziewski. "He was walking on time, standing on time, but the language was never there." Cody was diagnosed with autism at 20 months and soon after, his parents started him in an intensive and expensive therapy program called applied behavioral analysis, or ABA. Cody, now 3, responds to his name and has made many other strides. Yet he is only receiving 12 hours of ABA therapy a week, not the 25 hours a week that his developmental pediatrician recommends. That's because Tricare, the military insurance provider that the family relies on, does not cover any more than that. Cody's father, Army Ranger and Connecticut native Joe Kapacziewski, has been deployed 11 times since he joined the Army on Sept. 13, 2011. After his right leg was shattered by an enemy grenade in 2005, he chose to have it amputated to improve his mobility and remain a Ranger. (He is due back at Fort Benning, Georgia, this week from his latest deployment in Afghanistan.) The Kapacziewskis and other military families whose children have autism are pressing for Congress … Continue reading

Stroke victims are left moderately to severely impaired following an occurrence, including affecting speech, motor functions and the ability to drive a car. While the average age for most people to have a stroke is 55, Shain stressed age alone shouldn't be a driving factor. Women are twice as likely to obtain "We are seeing younger stroke victims all the time," Shain said. "At (Bakersfield) Memorial we see stroke victims come in on a weekly basis who are in their 40s." Signs of a stroke include sudden weakness, partial paralysis in one side of the body or numbness in the face, vision problems, trouble speaking or … Continue reading
