SC education board rejects biology standards

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2014

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) The state board of education has rejected a proposal to change how biology is taught in South Carolina schools. The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that the board met Wednesday to discuss a proposal to require biology students to study arguments for and against evolution. Greenville Sen. Mike Fair recommended the new proposal, saying students should learn other theories. Fair is a member of the Education Oversight Committee, which recommended the new proposal. The board's rejection of the new proposal means that South Carolina will keep the biology standards that have been in effect since 2005. The president of South Carolinians for Science Education, College of Charleston biology professor Rob Dillon, said he is pleased with the board's decision, which he called support for "rigorous" science. ___ Information from: The Post and Courier, http://www.postandcourier.com Go here to see the original: SC education board rejects biology standards … Continue reading

The anatomy of a first-round deal

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2014

There's nothing free about free agency in the restrictive salary-cap era, unless you have ample room under the ceiling to absorb fat contracts. NHL general managers must address roster needs with an eye on their bottom lines while building through smart drafting and wise trades. That approach allowed the Anaheim Ducks to capture the Stanley Cup this season. Eight years ago at the entry draft in Boston, former Vancouver Canucks general manager Brian Burke offered a window into today's NHL. He was brash - and also a bully - to fashion a complicated scenario where the Canucks secured the second and third overall picks to land Daniel and Henrik Sedin. "That was the hardest deal I've ever made and the most work I've ever put into a trade," recalled the Ducks GM. "I know they told us they weren't coming unless we got them both and it was a seminal moment in Vancouver. "We had 7,600 season tickets and the media started to take us seriously that these guys [Sedins] can turn it around. Their emergence doesn't surprise me. "They were character kids with a great work ethic and we knew they'd get better because they wanted to get better. … Continue reading

Anatomy classes feature making life-size body parts with clay

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2014

One way to get kids interested in science is to make it fun, like learning anatomy by making life-size body parts from clay muscles, tendons, nerves, and body systems. This innovative way of learning, used in more than 9,000 classrooms, is part of a pilot program between Front Range libraries and Anatomy in Clay, a Denver-based nonprofit. The idea is that as students see, hear and touch as they learn, the knowledge is retained longer than with rote learning. Last month the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library offered free sessions, and libraries in Highlands Ranch, Louisville, Fort Collins and Berthoud are expected to be part of the pilot program in coming months. This month, Anythink Library in Thornton will have two introductory classes for people of all ages on June 14 and 28 from noon to 2 p.m. Classes just for teens, called "What's Inside of You?", will be held on Mondays in July from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. These require registration via Anythink's online calendar at http://www.anythinklibraries.org/calendar-day.
