New First-in-class Epilepsy Treatment Fycompa (perampanel) Launches in Russia

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2014

HATFIELD, England, June 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Fycompa (perampanel), the first in an entirely new class of treatment for partial onset seizures (the most common form of epilepsy), has today launched in Russia. The therapy is indicated for the adjunctive treatment of partial onset seizures, with or without secondarily generalised seizures, in patients with epilepsy aged 12 years and older.[1] Perampanel is the only licensed anti-epileptic drug (AED) to selectively target AMPA receptors, a protein in the brain which plays a critical role in the spread of seizures.[2] This mechanism of action is different to other, currently available AEDs. In addition, perampanel has the added benefit of convenient, once-daily dosing at bedtime[1] and, significantly, is the only new-generation partial epilepsy treatment approved to treat adolescents with epilepsy from launch. "New treatment options like perampanel are vital for people with partial onset epilepsy in Russia, and particularly those who live with uncontrolled seizures," commented Professor Elena Belousova, Director of Psychoneurology and Epileptology, Moscow Research Institute of Pediatrics. "Epilepsy remains a challenging condition to treat and new options such as this are always welcomed by doctors." Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions in the world.[3] Around 3 out of … Continue reading

Visiting Vet: False alarm

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2014

I watched Anastasia walk. Ears? Fine. Eyes? Normal. Teeth? Perfect. Michelle Gerhard Jasny, V.M.D. has been practicing veterinary medicine on the Vineyard since 1982 and writing the Visiting Vet column for more than 25 years. She lives and works in West Tisbury. She can be reached at drjasny@comcast.net. As usual, I started my morning perusing the days schedule. Although we computerized decades ago, I have never let go of my good old-fashioned, spiral-bound, paper appointment book, where we scrawl in good old-fashioned number two pencil owners name, pets name, species, reason for visit, phone number. The day looked fairly routine. Recheck cat with hyperthyroidism. Lyme booster. Annual physical. House call to cat at assisted living residence. Dog with red eye. Cat with head tilt. I paused. Who had the head tilt? A 13-year-old Russian Blue cross named Anastasia whom I had known since she was a little four-pound kitten. Holding the head angled to one side is referred to by veterinarians as a head tilt. It can be a symptom of a wide range of problems, from the benign to the life-threatening. Head tilts in cats usually fall into three categories. The first group is cats experiencing discomfort around the … Continue reading

'Love' hormone rejuvenates old muscles too

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2014

Home > News > special-features New York, June 11 : The 'love hormone' not only triggers emotions when you see your beloved but also helps old muscles work like new. According to new research, oxytocin - a hormone associated with maternal nurturing, social attachments, childbirth and sex - is indispensable for healthy muscle maintenance and repair. "Our quest was to find a molecule that not only rejuvenates old muscle and other tissue but that can do so sustainably without increasing the risk of cancer," said principal investigator Irina Conboy, an associate professor of bioengineering at University of California, Berkeley. Conboy and her research team found that oxytocin is a good candidate because it is a broad range hormone that reaches every organ and is not known to be associated with tumours or to interfere with the immune system. "This is the hormone that makes your heart melt when you see kittens, puppies and human babies," said Conboy. The new study determined that in mice, blood levels of oxytocin declined with age. To tease out oxytocin's role in muscle repair, the researchers injected the hormone under the skin of old mice for four days, and then for five days more after … Continue reading

Trust hormone helps old muscle work like new

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2014

UC Berkeley researchers have discovered that oxytocin a hormone associated with maternal nurturing, social attachments, childbirth and sex is indispensable for healthy muscle maintenance and repair, and that in mice it declines with age. The new study, published today (June 10) in the journal Nature Communications, presents oxytocin as the latest treatment target for age-related muscle wasting, or sarcopenia. A few other biochemical factors in blood have been connected to aging and disease in recent years, but oxytocin is the first anti-aging molecule identified that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for clinical use in humans, the researchers said. Pitocin, a synthetic form of oxytocin, is already used to help with labor and to control bleeding after childbirth. Clinical trials of an oxytocin nasal spray are also underway to alleviate symptoms associated with mental disorders such as autism, schizophrenia and dementia. Unfortunately, most of the molecules discovered so far to boost tissue regeneration are also associated with cancer, limiting their potential as treatments for humans, said study principal investigator Irina Conboy, associate professor of bioengineering. Our quest is to find a molecule that not only rejuvenates old muscle and other tissue, but that can do so sustainably long-term … Continue reading

No More Eye Drops for Glaucoma

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2014

Scientists from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and the Singapore Eye Research Institute have jointly developed a new nanomedicine, liposomal latanoprost, that will allow glaucoma patients to do away with daily eye drops. The nanomedicine is delivered to the front of the eye via a painless injection and will stay and release the anti-glaucoma drugs slowly over the next six months. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, especially for the elderly. The condition is caused by high intra-ocular pressure in the eye, which then leads to damage to the optic nerve. Conventionally the first line of treatment for glaucoma patients is the daily application of eye drops that can lower the high pressure in their eyes. This treatment is usually required for the rest of the patients' lives because glaucoma is a chronic disease. The sustained-release drug therapy can provide months of control for glaucoma patients with a single application, compared to just hours with eye drops. The new therapy has successfully gone through a pilot study with six patients conducted at the Singapore National Eye Centre. The treatment was shown to be both safe and effective. Co-lead scientist Associate Professor Tina Wong, who is the head of the … Continue reading

Shu Cosmetic Surgery of Twin Cities Now Offers Complimentary Liposuction of Flanks with a Full Tummy Tuck

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2014

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) June 08, 2014 Shu Cosmetic Surgery announces today that they are now offering complimentary liposuction of flanks for each qualifying patient undergoing a full tummy tuck. Dr. Steven Shu has been performing lipoabdominoplasty, an advanced type of tummy tuck, for the last three years. The new style of tummy tuck significantly improves the contour of the tummy with a quick recovery. Some patients request the liposuction on their flanks as an added service and extra cost. Dr. Shu found that liposuction of the flanks significantly improves aesthetic result in the body contouring, so he decided to perform complimentary liposuction at the same time during the tummy tuck surgery at no extra cost to the patient. A traditional tummy tuck is involved in removing excess skin and fat with dissection, as well as tightening the abdominal muscles. However, it involves more traumas with extensive incisions and bleeding, which leads to more complications. The result of a traditional tummy tuck is usually not ideal because of more fat left in the mid-section of upper abdomen and bulkiness in flanks. Lipoabdominoplasty, which has combined liposuction with a new style of abdominoplasty, has allowed surgeons to transform patients' tummies after child … Continue reading
