It takes a Village; local brewery hosts swab-a-thon

Posted: Published on June 9th, 2014

Ryan White, CTV Calgary Published Saturday, June 7, 2014 4:38PM MDT Last Updated Saturday, June 7, 2014 6:30PM MDT Dozens of men stepped forward to offer their cheek cells for testing in the hope of assisting patients in need of stem cell or bone marrow transplants. On Saturday, the Village Brewery offered beer tastings and tours to those who took part in the swab-a-thon. The event was created by Steve Carpenter, the operator of a local micro-brewery, whose brother Al was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in November. Al, married and the father of two, was in desperate need of stem cell treatment and Canadian Blood Services was unable to locate a suitable match through its stem cell and bone marrow donor program. Steve and his friends organized a swab-a-thon in the hopes of locating a suitable donor, and Jim Button, a childhood friend of Als and the owner of Village Brewery, offered the use of his brewery. Miraculously, in the days before the swab-a-thon was to be held, a suitable stem cell match was located for Al and he underwent treatment in an Ottawa hospital. Doctors say Al is responding well to the treatment. Despite the fact … Continue reading

Wounded Warriors try out to represent Navy

Posted: Published on June 9th, 2014

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - David Vernaza suffered traumatic brain injury after his convoy was attacked in Iraq in 2004, leaving the former Navy Seabee with a series of crippling physical injuries and others that caused a fun-loving man to live in a dark world within his mind. But after receiving years of treatment at a veterans hospital in Miami, Vernaza started to participate in sports as part of his therapy that he says helped change his life along with the dedicated support of his family. I had a lot of guilt. I had a lot of resentment, said Vernaza, who retired from the Navy in 2007 after 17 years of service and was unable to use his right arm when he returned to the U.S. and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. This past week, he and more than 60 other sailors and Coast Guardsmen who are wounded, ill or injured descended on Naval Station Norfolk to compete for a spot on Team Navy as it prepares to compete in the 2014 Wounded Warrior games in Colorado this fall. It still makes me feel part of the Navy, Vernaza, of Orlando, said about the trials to compete in shot put and … Continue reading

Scholarship to support embryonic stem cell research

Posted: Published on June 9th, 2014

Scholarship to support Waikato students embryonic stem cell research University of Waikato Biological Sciences student Sarah Appleby has won a C. Alma Baker Postgraduate Scholarship for her agriculture-focused masters research project. Bovine embryonic stem cell research The Massey University scholarship, worth $13,000, will go towards Sarahs research into bovine embryonic stem cells. Im working with Dr Bjorn Oback at AgResearch on bovine embryonic stem cells and testing their functional potential. Embryonic stem cells have really only been fully isolated from mice and rats, however the group at AgResearch (Ruakura) have developed a method that isolates cells from cows that have very similar properties to the mice embryonic stem cells. Tests have already shown that the cells perform well in the lab, so my work will be focused on seeing if they improve cloning efficiency, says Sarah. The aim of this work is to improve our understanding of bovine embryonic stem cells for their use in accelerated animal breeding and biomedical applications. If we can effectively capture the best traits using embryonic stem cells we could develop better biotechnology-based breeding systems to have animals that are more efficient and sustainable to farm. Hands-on work placements The former Whangamata Area School student … Continue reading
