North East Ambulance Service gets funding boost to help improve care for stroke patients

Posted: Published on June 8th, 2014

A new project to extend the amount of treatments a paramedic can deliver to a suspected stroke patient has been approved Stroke patients in the North East will benefit from a new project to increase on-scene treatment. North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust has been given a financial boost of 72,000 to extend the amount of treatments a paramedic can deliver to a suspected stroke sufferer before arrival at hospital. It is hoped that the 12-month clinical research will improve knowledge about stroke treatments through increasing opportunities for research during paramedic assessment and improving the transfer of information between ambulance and hospital records. Paul Fell, consultant paramedic at NEAS said: This is great news for the patient and the paramedic profession, having access to the data and enhancing the paramedic training not only allows the paramedic to be more involved in the whole patient episode but will without doubt increase the paramedics knowledge around strokes and their evolving treatment of these cases. NHS Medical Director Sir Bruce Keoghs Urgent and Emergency Care Review, published in January 2013, recommended that ambulance crews be supported to make their own independent interventions on stroke patients. The new project is a collaboration between … Continue reading

Health care interpreters becoming vital part of medical team

Posted: Published on June 8th, 2014

As Dr. Deb McLeish prepared to inject Botox into the arms and legs of 10-year-old Jossi Cabello to relieve stiffness from cerebral palsy, McLeish had to make sure Jossis mother understood the risks. Guadalupe Cabello speaks Spanish, so McLeish relied on an interpreter, Guadalupe Mangin. McLeish told Cabello that Botox is related to the toxin that causes botulism, which can result in paralysis. Mangin repeated the words in Spanish. But when Botox is injected into muscles, it stays in the nerves and doesnt go into the bloodstream, McLeish said, pausing as Mangin relayed the message. Thats why we can use it as a therapy, McLeish said, Mangin echoing her again. Cabello consented to the treatment. Mangin, who works for UW Health, isnt just bilingual. Shes trained and certified as a health care interpreter, a job that is becoming more standardized as health care organizations treat an increasingly diverse spectrum of patients. Years ago, hospitals and clinics relied on bilingual employees or patients family members to help if communication wasnt clear. But medicine is technical, with liability on the line. Family members sometimes filter information, thinking theyre protecting loved ones when they could be jeopardizing their care. Today, health systems employ … Continue reading

Stem cells work on MS in mice

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2014

Human embryonic stem cells the bodys powerful master cells might be useful for treating multiple sclerosis, researchers reported Thursday. A team has used cells taken from frozen human embryos and transformed them into a type of cell that scientists have hoped might help treat patients with MS, a debilitating nerve disease. Mice with an induced version of MS that paralyzed them were able to walk freely after the treatment, the teams at Advanced Cell Technology and ImStem Biotechnology in Farmington, Connecticut, reported. The cells appeared to travel to the damaged tissues in the mice, toning down the mistaken immune system response that strips the fatty protective layer off of nerve calls. Its that damage that causes symptoms ranging from tremors and loss of balance to blurry vision and paralysis. These embryonic stem cells were carefully nurtured to make them form a type of immature cell called a mesenchymal stem cell. These cells worked better to treat the mice than naturally developed mesenchymal stem cells taken directly from bone marrow, the team wrote in the journal Stem Cell Reports, published by the International Society for Stem Cell Research. The top mouse is paralyzed, while the mouse on the bottom was treated … Continue reading
