Mature liver cells can turn into stem cells!

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2014

Home > News > health-news New York, June 7 : Liver is known to regenerate itself, but can liver cells be reverted to a stem-cell like state? Yes, researchers say. The finding can pave the way for liver cells transplant to cure genetic liver disorders. Researchers at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, led by Fernando Camargo, stumbled upon this fact while investigating whether a biochemical cascade called "Hippo", which controls how big the liver grows, also affects the cell's fate. "I think this study highlights the tremendous plasticity of mature liver cells," said Camargo, an associate professor at Harvard University's department of stem cell and regenerative biology. The researchers found that switching off the Hippo-signalling pathway in mature liver cells generates very high rates of dedifferentiation. This means the cells turn back the clock to become stem-cell like again, thus allowing them to give rise to functional progenitor cells that can regenerate a diseased liver. Even if three-quarters of a liver is surgically removed, duplication alone could return the organ to its normal functioning mass. This new research indicates that there is a second mode of regeneration that may be repairing constant liver damage. "It is not that you have … Continue reading

N.L. stroke death rate highest in Canada

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2014

A new report from the Heart and Stroke Foundation shows the death rate from strokes is higher in Newfoundland and Labrador than any other Canadian province by a substantial margin. Based on data from 2011-12, there were 29.9 deaths attributed to stroke per 100,000 people in the province. Thats well above the Canadian average of 17.9 deaths. The province with the closest death rate to Newfoundland and Labrador is New Brunswick at 22.4. Lou Ann Kelly, a stroke survivor who is also a nursing educator based in St. Johns, said Newfoundland and Labradors aging population would contribute to that figure, though she notes a stroke can happen at any age. Kelly was 46 when she experienced a stroke in December 2011. It has been a struggle, said Kelly, who only returned to work in March of this year. But Ive had some fantastic doctors and therapists, as well as family and friends to support me through this. According to Kelly, delays in accessing medical treatment upon suffering a stroke may contribute to the higher-than-average death rate in Newfoundland and Labrador. Our population is a lot more rural than it is urban, so theyre away form the bigger centres that would … Continue reading

Soldiers Get Crash Course in Dealing With Traumatic Brain Injury

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2014

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. -- Giving soldiers the best chance of survival and a future after their service is the Army's goal with a program focusing on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Leading neurological experts visited Fort Leonard Wood Thursday to teach those soldiers and their commanders about traumatic brain injuries; how to spot them, and when and where to seek treatment. Those experts say quickly acknowledging the possibility of a traumatic brain injury and getting a screening can change lives. It can mean the difference between a recovery and making matters worse. Many soldiers and every day people receive blows much less severe than the story you are about to read but put them selves in danger by doing nothing. "In October 2006 I was a platoon leader in Iraq with the 5th Engineer Battalion while on patrol looking for IEDs, says Cpt. Joe Bogart. One detonated within five meters of my vehicle." Bogart survived the blast of that improvised explosive device, but not without lasting wounds. "Shrapnel took my right eye, he says. I had a bunch of fractures in my forehead, my nose, my cheeks, blunt trauma to my left eye, which, as an end result, I was … Continue reading

HIV Transmission Networks Mapped to Reduce Infection Rate

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have mapped the transmission network of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in San Diego. The mapping of HIV infections, which used genetic sequencing, allowed researchers to predictively model the likelihood of new HIV transmissions and identify persons at greatest risk for transmitting the virus. The findings are published online in the June 5 issue of the journal PLOS ONE. The more we understand the structure and dynamics of an HIV transmission network, the better we can identify hot spots of transmission, said Susan Little, MD, professor of medicine at the UC San Diego AntiViral Research Center and lead author of the study. Not everyone who is HIV-infected is equally likely to transmit the infection to others. There are clusters of more active disease transmission. We can use this information to target treatment interventions to those most likely to transmit the virus to others and markedly reduce the number of new infections. The researchers analyzed the HIV-1 sequence data from recently HIV-1 infected persons and their sexual and social contacts in San Diego, between 1996 and 2011. Sequence data were collected as part … Continue reading
