KUCHING: The Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM) Sarawak held a talk on Chemist Act 1975 and IKM at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) recently. According to a press statement issued by IKM Sarawak Branch, the talk was attended by the Head of Chemistry Department, Dr Sim Siong Fong and about 100 final year chemistry students, post graduate students and lecturers. The talk was delivered by IKM Sarawak branch chairman Dr Alvin Chai Lian Kuet, who is also the Council Member of IKM Headquarters in KL. The purpose of the talk is to explain the Chemist Act 1975 and function of IKM to the final year students who are the potential IKM members. The talk is one of the 2014 IKM Sarawak activities to reach out to new chemists. The talk covers all aspects of Chemists Act in regulating the chemistry profession, the press release said. Under the Act, all practising chemists must register with IKM to qualify as a registered chemist. Only registered IKM chemist can sign the chemical analysis report. It is also the requirement of Malaysian standard MS ISO/IEC 17025 that only the registered IKM chemist can be qualified as signatory for chemical analysis report. The report highlights inconsistent delivery of science education and calls on government to introduce urgent changes to avert a skills and knowledge shortage in crucial science sectors by 2020. Launching the report, Clare Viney, Royal Society of Chemistry Executive Director of Communications and Campaigns, said: "Cutting edge science remains a central component of a growing and resilient economy. "Our children deserve the best science and chemistry education we can provide to secure their economic futures and to furnish them with the skills, knowledge and vision to meet global challenges head-on." Competitors such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, and Poland currently out-rank the UK in international league tables. If the UK's science and chemistry education provision cannot keep pace, new investment in chemistry-using industries may go elsewhere, removing jobs on a permanent basis.
