FDA warns vs new stem cell product

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2014

MANILA, PhilippinesStem cells in a bottle? Too good to be true. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned the public not to be taken in by the claims about Inner Power Stem Cells Booster, a purported stem cell product being sold and promoted online. In an advisory dated May 29, FDA acting Director General Kenneth Go said the bottled product being marketed on a classified ads website, http://www.olx.ph, was not registered with the FDA either as a drug or a food supplement or human cells, tissues and cellular and tissue-based product (HCT/P). Go also said the online ad carried deceitful health and therapeutic claims not supported by scientific or clinical studies. According to the ad, seaweeds are the primary ingredient of the product combined with root crops, fruits, vegetables, legumes, honey and fructoligosaccharides (food for good bacteria). The prebiotic mixture had been fermented and had produced a byproduct in the form of a jam, the ad said. The ad further claimed that once taken, the product helped in stem cell production by the process of mitosis that would aid in platelet, red and white blood cells production. Sea turtles The ad also claimed that the product was formulated by … Continue reading

Maritime motorcyclists ride to raise funds for blindness research

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2014

Published on June 01, 2014 TRURO Ride for Sight is once again coming to Truro. The event, en route to Urbania, will depart Truro on June 14 and parade through Colchester and Hants counties in support of vision research. Its the largest motorcycle fundraiser in Canada for vision research. I worry about my eyesight and my future every day, said Maritime Ride for Sight organizing committee chairperson Kelly Rivard, who lives with a medical condition that jeopardizes her sight. The Ride for Sight brings motorcyclists from across our region together to raise funds for researchers who seek to treat blinding diseases, and to inspire hope for me, and for other Canadian families touched by vision loss. In Canada, more than one million people are living with retinal diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and that number is growing. AMD is the leading cause of blindness in Canadians over the age of 50. The parade will depart from the Truro Power Centre at 12 noon on June 14. Registration will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m., with a parade kick off opening ceremonies at 11:30 p.m. Bikes will line up at 11:40 a.m. for parade departure. Motorcyclists … Continue reading

One- & Two-Year Survival Rates of 94% and 88% Announced from Phase 1b Trial of Investigational PD-1 Checkpoint …

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2014

The treatment of advanced melanoma has changed dramatically in the last few years, but there continues to be a need to increase the number of patients who experience a long-term survival benefit, said Dr. Mario Sznol, Yale University School of Medicine and Yale Cancer Center, presenter of the results. While these are Phase 1b data, the duration of response and one- and two-year survival rates observed with the combination regimen of nivolumab and Yervoy are very encouraging and support the rationale for the ongoing, late stage trials of this combination regimen. The science of immuno-oncology harnessing the patients immune system to treat cancer is rapidly evolving, said Michael Giordano, senior vice president, Head of Development, Oncology & Immunology at Bristol-Myers Squibb. These results are the most advanced data set to date evaluating the potential of combining immune checkpoint inhibitors. As leaders in the field, they reinforce our aspiration that combining immunotherapies may be foundational and may have the potential to change the standard of care by transforming survival expectations. Results from Phase 1b Combination Regimen (Study -004) Study 004 is a dose-ranging Phase 1 study (n=127) evaluating the safety, antitumor activity and pharmacokinetics of the combination regimen of nivolumab and … Continue reading
