Dancers dancing to help Sofias sight

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2014

Sofia Lampson image credit: courtesy Annette Lampson Lifes sunny side shines through Sofia Lampson, especially when shes Highland dancing. Whenever I hear the music, my legs want to dance, said the Celtic Rhythm student ready for Saturdays big Cowichan Theatre recital. I like dance because its fast; I like doing fast things, and moving. But seeing motion and more isnt easy for the energetic eight-year-old getting costly treatments for degenerative retinitis pigmentosa often called RP, or tunnel vision. So her family and dance school are asking Cowichanians to help fund Lampsons expensive treatments. A silent-auction Fundraiser For Sofias Sight happens after Saturdays 7 p.m. show. Treatments could cost $15,000 in the next few years. The Lampsons find them effective, but they are not endorsed by the Canadian medical establishment and not covered by B.C.s health care. Mainstream medicine hasnt any possibility of curing it, said Lampsons mom, Annette. The only thing they can do is monitor how its progressing. A specialist in Victoria said they can do something with genetic medicine, but thats years down the road. However, the Lampsons heard of treatments by Chinese-medicine practitioner Dr. Weidong Yu of Vancouvers Wellspring Clinic. He specializes in RP. People come from … Continue reading

Rare stem cell transplant saves life of 59-year-old

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2014

A haploidentical or half-matched stem cell transplantation has succeeded in saving the life of a 59-year-old patient with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) that was resistant to all other treatments. The donor was his 25-year-old son. The procedure was done over a month ago at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences here and the patient has now been stepped down from the intensive care unit. The patient from Thiruvananthapuram had a relapse of myelodysplastic syndrome transformed into AML. As the search for a complete match of stem cell did not yield any results, the patient was ready for the half-match procedure. The haploidentical procedure is more complex and expensive. The procedure is not hi-tech but more care-oriented, said Dr. Neeraj Sidharthan, who led a team of experts from haematology, medical oncology, transfusion medicine and other allied departments. The haploidentical stem cell transplantation is much more expensive and the survival rates are said to be 25-30 per cent compared to the identical stem cell transplantation that has a survival rate of 60-70 per cent. However, the haploidentical cases were likely to grow as the chances of getting an identical match of stem cell were extremely limited, said Dr. Neeraj. China, which has … Continue reading

For the first time in the lab, researchers see stem cells take key step toward development

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 30-May-2014 Contact: Liz Ahlberg eahlberg@illinois.edu 217-244-1073 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign CHAMPAIGN, Ill. The gap between stem cell research and regenerative medicine just became a lot narrower, thanks to a new technique that coaxes stem cells, with potential to become any tissue type, to take the first step to specialization. It is the first time this critical step has been demonstrated in a laboratory. University of Illinois researchers, in collaboration with scientists at Notre Dame University and the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, published their results in the journal Nature Communications. "Everybody knows that for an embryo to form, somehow a single cell has a way to self-organize into multiple cells, but the in vivo microenvironment is not well understood," said study leader Ning Wang, a professor of mechanical science and engineering at the U. of I. "We want to know how they develop into organized structures and organs. It doesn't happen by random chance. There are biological rules that we don't yet understand." During fetal development, all the specialized tissues and organs of the body form out of a small ball of stem cells. First, the ball of generalized cells separates into three … Continue reading

Scientists Stimulate Dental Stem Cells With Laser

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2014

May 29, 2014 Brett Smith for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online Researchers led by a team from Harvard University have successfully used a low-power laser to stimulate stem cell differentiation within the body, according to a study published on Wednesday by Science Translational Medicine. [ Watch the Video: What Are Stem Cells? ] The study team used a laser to stimulate dental stem cells and cause them to form dentin the hard tissue that makes up the majority of a tooth. The study was also able to identify and describe the molecular mechanism behind the growth process. Study author David Mooney noted that the work could eventually lead to testing of a non-invasive dental procedure. Our treatment modality does not introduce anything new to the body, and lasers are routinely used in medicine and dentistry, so the barriers to clinical translation are low, said Mooney, a professor of bioengineering at Harvards School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), in a recent statement. It would be a substantial advance in the field if we can regenerate teeth rather than replace them. The study team began by drilling holes in the molars of rodents. Next, the team treated the tooth pulp containing dental … Continue reading

IVF hope for Ryedale women

Ryedale women given IVF hope 1:29pm Wednesday 28th May 2014 in Ryedale news By Gazette Reporter Local GPs on the NHS Scarborough and Ryedale CCG Governing Body have agreed to reintroduce In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment for women in the area. IVF, which has been a hot topic since the former primary care trust ceased funding it in 2011 due to financial pressures, was discussed at the CCGs Governing Body meeting held in public at Ryedale District Council. The item was presented by Carrie Wollerton, executive nurse on the governing body. Her recommendation to establish a working group to further investigate options for reintroducing IVF received wide support from other governing body members. Mrs Wollerton explained that although the funding of IVF did not feature on the CCGs financial plans for 2014/15, funding should still be considered; particularly in light of moves by neighbouring CCGs to reintroduce some form of IVF treatment. Mrs Wollerton said: Due to the fact the CCG has managed to achieve its target of ending the financial year with a one percent surplus, and in line with our promise to review the commissioning position around IVF after our first year of operation, it is encouraging that … Continue reading
