Further important findings for mountain medicine expected

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2014

29.05.2014 - (idw) Europische Akademie Bozen - European Academy Bozen/Bolzano X. World Congress on High Altitude Medicine and Physiology & Mountain Emergency Medicine, held in Bozen/Bolzano Anyone who spends time at altitude in excess of 2500 metres can have difficulties, sometimes against all expectation, in adapting to these heights. They may subsequently complain either of minor ailments such as headache, dizziness, disturbed sleep, or may experience more serious consequences of altitude sickness, which can be fatal. The first interim findings were presented on 28 May 2014 by the organisers of the congress run by the EURAC Institute of Mountain Emergency Medicine in South Tyrol, together with their research colleagues. Hundreds of millions of people all over the world travel to, work in or live in mountainous regions. The stress caused by high altitudes causes many health problems as their body seems to be incapable of adapting to such conditions. Studies presented at the congress by mountain medicine experts indicate that around 15% of the population living in the South American Andes suffer from chronic altitude sickness with severe effects on their everyday lives. The Sherpas in Nepal as well as the population of Tibet, on the other hand, are largely … Continue reading

UB spinoff Nanobiotix working to bring cancer treatment to market

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2014

Laurent Levy left UB in 1999 with a dream: transforming his recently completed postdoctoral research on nanomedicine into real-world products for patients battling cancer. Today, the scientist-turned-entrepreneur is zeroing in on that goal. In February, Levys drug development company, Nanobiotix, announced that a cancer treatment called NBTXR3, the first product from its NanoXray pipeline, had shown positive intermediate results in a pilot clinical trial on patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma. These results allowed Nanobiotix to finalize and to announce its development plan for the launch of NBTXR3 on the market: With this first indication, advanced soft tissue sarcoma, NBTXR3 could be approved in Europe as early as 2016. The news led to a jump in the companys stock price and new funding for research at UB. Nanobiotix got its start in 2003 by licensing two technologies that Levy developed with colleagues at the university and Roswell Park Cancer Institute: magnetic nanoparticles for cancer treatment and diagnosis (NanoMag), and laser-activated nanoparticles for cancer treatment (NanoPDT). UB received company stock as part of the licensing agreement, and sold the shares in February for $1.35 million. In accordance with university policy, the majority will return to UB, to be reinvested in research. … Continue reading

New grant to help science, tech majors stay the course

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2014

BERKELEY Over the past 22 years, UC Berkeleys Biology Scholars Program has successfully mentored some 2,900 undergraduates mostly low-income, first-generation, women or minority students through tough courses in highly competitive majors. Now, a new five-year, $1.5 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) will help the program share its successful strategies for supporting and retaining undergraduate biology majors throughout the Berkeley campus, in areas ranging from chemical biology to environmental science. Third-year student Jessica Reyes, a pre-med English major, shares her sentiments about the Biology Scholars Program. My goal is to help all students succeed in biology at Berkeley, with a special emphasis on those from underrepresented ethnic minority, first-generation and low-income backgrounds, said John Matsui, co-founder and director of the program. Low-income and first-generation students experience the greatest disparities in performance because they often come from under-resourced high schools and communities, he added. My students have both the motivation and aptitude to do science. Berkeley Scholars Program-style advising, tutoring and instruction within a socially and academically supportive environment have helped students reveal their potential to succeed. The result? The programs students, on average, enter Berkeley with lower SATs and GPAs than their majority peers, yet graduate with … Continue reading

Bioinformatics Market is Expected to Grow at a CAGR of over 23.0% from 2014 to 2020 New Report Published By Grand View …

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2014

San Francisco, California (PRWEB) May 28, 2014 The global market for bioinformatics is expected to reach USD 12.48 billion by 2020, according to a new study by Grand View Research, Inc. Rapidly declining prices of DNA sequencing, growing adoption rates of bioinformatics as a cost effective tool for database management during clinical trials, increasing government initiatives encouraging the use of bioinformatics in drug discovery and the use of bioinformatics tools in emerging fields such as chemogenomics are some of the factors expected to drive market growth over the next six years. In addition, the introduction of advance technologies such as nanopore and cloud computing are expected to serve this market as future growth opportunities. Bioinformatics platform products are expected to dominate the market, along with being the fastest growing segment, at an estimated CAGR of 22.8% from 2014 to 2020. The increasing demand for these platforms in technologically advanced processes such as high throughput screening for combination therapies namely pharmacogenomics and pharmacoproteomics is expected to serve this market as drivers during the forecast period. Global biocontent product demand is expected to reach USD 4.30 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 16.9% from 2014 to 2020. The report Bioinformatics … Continue reading

:: 29, May 2014 :: POCKET SCIENCE: NEW MOBILE APPLICATION ENABLES DNA ANALYSIS ON THE GO

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2014

POCKET SCIENCE: NEW MOBILE APPLICATION ENABLES DNA ANALYSIS ON THE GO Researchers from A*STARs Bioinformatics Institute (BII) have developed the first mobile application for Android phones that analyses ab1[1] DNA sequencing files, which enables science professionals and amateur enthusiasts to engage in scientific analysis on the go, from the convenience of their mobile phones. DNA sequencing is a commonly used technique which has advanced many areas of biological research, from the understanding of genetic information to the causes and treatment of human diseases. However, analysis of DNA sequencing files used to be carried out only on computers. This frustrated Dr Samuel KE Gan, molecular cell biologist and team leader of Antibody & Product Development (APD) Laboratory, when he wanted to work when travelling. He presented the challenge to his computer science research officer Mr Nguyen Phi Vu, to find a better way to read data on the move. What resulted was the DNAApp, developed in just three months, which allowed him to read and analyse DNA sequencing files on his mobile phone. Dr Gans team published the app freely on Google Play store and Apple app store for scientists worldwide so that they too can improve their efficiency and productivity. … Continue reading

DNA sequences on the go, with an app born in a Singapore lab

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2014

SINGAPORE: A mobile app that analyses DNA sequencing files has been developed by researchers from the A*STARs Bioinformatics Institute (BII). DNAApp - available for free on the Android and iOS platforms - will enable science professionals and amateur enthusiasts to engage in scientific analysis while on their phones or tablets. Since its launch in April, it has been downloaded by users in more than 11 countries, said a statement released by A*STARs BII on Thursday (May 29). The app can analyse ab1 DNA sequencing files, which are files in the Applied Biosystems Genetic Analysis data file format, which could previously only be processed by a computer. The app, which took the team three months to develop, allows users to analyse visualisations of DNA sequencing files and carries out commonly used functions of DNA sequencing analysis. It can also complement existing web-based bioinformatics tools for deeper analysis. As the use of mobile devices and their applications becomes increasingly widespread, we hope to continue to be at the forefront of technology creating new bioinformatics tools for the advancement of scientific knowledge and making science accessible, said Dr Samuel K E Gan, molecular cell biologist and team leader of Antibody & Product Development (APD) … Continue reading
