Military: Brain implants could fight PTSD

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2014

Listen Story audio 3min 47sec The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, is launching a $70 million program to help military personnel with psychiatric disorders using electronic devices implanted in the brain. The goal of the five-year program is to develop new ways of treating problems including depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, all of which are common among service members who fought in Iraq or Afghanistan. "We've seen far too many times where military personnel have neuropsychiatric disorders and there's very few options," says Justin Sanchez, a program manager at DARPA. DARPA is known for taking on big technological challenges, from missile defense to creating a business plan for interstellar travel. In 2013, the agency announced it would play a big role in President Obama's initiative to explore the human brain. The new program will fund development of high-tech implanted devices able to both monitor and electrically stimulate specific brain circuits. The effort will be led by scientists at the University of California, San Francisco and Massachusetts General Hospital. Simple brain stimulation devices are already used to help patients with problems including Parkinson's disease. But DARPA wants something much more sophisticated, Sanchez says. "While those devices have been … Continue reading

Migrating stem cells possible new focus for stroke treatment

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 27-May-2014 Contact: Gesine Paul-Visse Gesine.Paul-Visse@med.lu.se 46-462-220-525 Lund University Two years ago, a new type of stem cell was discovered in the brain that has the capacity to form new cells. The same research group at Lund University in Sweden has now revealed that these stem cells, which are located in the outer blood vessel wall, appear to be involved in the brain reaction following a stroke. The findings show that the cells, known as pericytes, drop out from the blood vessel, proliferate and migrate to the damaged brain area where they are converted into microglia cells, the brain's inflammatory cells. Pericytes are known to contribute to tissue repair in a number of organs, and the researchers believe that their reparative properties could also apply to the brain. The study shows for the first time that pericytes are directly involved in the reaction of the brain tissue after stroke. "Pericytes are a fascinating cell type with many different properties and found at high density in the brain. It was surprising that a pericyte subtype is so strongly activated after a stroke. The fact that pericytes can be converted into microglia, which have an important function in the brain … Continue reading

Acupuncture: Easing pet pain

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2014

Many pet owners and veterinarians are turning to acupuncture to help heal animals. Gianna Caserta reports. With the growing popularity of alternative medicine, many pet owners are turning to acupuncture needles to relieve their animals' pain. Dr. Timothy Harkness uses acupuncture on animals at the Houston Humane Society and says he sees big improvements after treatment. "If you have a dog with arthritis, we will treat him and let him loose about two hours later and the dog is walking, so I know I have improvement. I haven't used any drugs, all I have used is needles," said Dr. Timothy Harkness, Houston Humane Society's Chief Veterinarian. He says the reason he likes acupuncture is because there are potentially no negative side effects in comparison with pain medications. "Nausea, overdosing, dogs become ataxia, can't walk -- that doesn't take place with the use of acupuncture," said Dr. Harkness. Packaged batches of stem cells for regenerative medicine

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2014

The Spanish start-up Aglaris Cell is close to launching onto the market the world's first bioreactor that cultures cell in a fully automated way, without using toxic additives. The device has attracted interest from the University of Oxford and the pharmaceutical giant, Merk. David Horna, a 33-year-old from Madrid and one of the co-founders of Aglaris Cell, whose offices are located in the Madrid Scientific Park (PCM), is in London this week to meet with investors to secure a second round of funding. Horna, alongside his two partners, Miquel Costa and Manuel A. Gonzlez de la Pea, created the company a little over two years ago with the aim of developing a device that would automate stem cell cultures thereby making advances in the production of 'live' medicines. As David Horna explained, after four years of intensive research and development, the prototype called Aglaris Facer 1.0, patented in 2012 in Spain and in the process of obtaining its international patent, "is practically ready to be sold on the market." The idea of developing this device came about when the partners, who worked in various fields of biotechnology, noticed that more and more industries were using cells and tissues in their … Continue reading

Funding for better understanding of cancer-causing cell defect

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 26-May-2014 Contact: Andrew Gould andrew.gould@plymouth.ac.uk University of Plymouth A research team from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry has received funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council for research to better understand a cell defect that contributes to diseases such as cancer. Their work could directly lead to the development of drug therapies to halt these diseases at the very earliest stages of diagnosis. The team is led by Dr. Bing Hu, Associate Professor in Oral and Dental Health Research at Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. The project will last for three years and has received funding of almost half a million pounds. Planar Cell Polarity (PCP) is a fundamental cellular mechanism that controls growth and development by aligning cells and tissues. Scientists know that a defect in PCP contributes to many human diseases, and that changes in PCP are often the earliest 'cellular events' that lead to conditions such as cancer. Little is understood about the mechanism behind these changes and the role of PCP genes. If scientists can discover how the mechanism works, the way may be open for the development of drug therapies to treat PCP-related diseases. … Continue reading

Grandmother of five from Poynton set to take part in record sky diving attempt A super gran is leaping out of a plane to fund research into a disease that is making her blind. Jean Drinkwater, 67, has retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary and degenerative eye disease for which there is no cure. In the last decade the gradual decline of her eyesight has turned her life upside down. The grandmother of five from Poynton had to retire early and relies on her husband Roger, 70, and guide dog Kit to help her get around. Her only hope is that doctors find a cure to the disease before she shares the same fate as her mother and goes completely blind. In a bid to speed up research, Jean is taking part in a world record sky dive attempt on June 14. Jean, of Charlecote Road, said: At the moment there is no cure to this disease so my only hope is that research speeds up and for that to happen they need money. Even if they cannot help me I hope they can find a cure for future generations. Before her eyesight began to fail Jean set up and managed Macclesfield … Continue reading
