Stem cell development: Experts offer insight into basic mechanisms of stem cell differentiation

Posted: Published on May 24th, 2014

The world has great expectations that stem cell research one day will revolutionize medicine. But in order to exploit the potential of stem cells, we need to understand how their development is regulated. Now researchers from University of Southern Denmark offer new insight. Stem cells are cells that are able to develop into different specialized cell types with specific functions in the body. In adult humans these cells play an important role in tissue regeneration. The potential to act as repair cells can be exploited for disease control of e.g. Parkinson's or diabetes, which are diseases caused by the death of specialized cells. By manipulating the stem cells, they can be directed to develop into various specialized cell types. This however, requires knowledge of the processes that regulate their development. Now Danish researchers from University of Southern Denmark report a new discovery that provides valuable insight into basic mechanisms of stem cell differentiation. The discovery could lead to new ways of making stem cells develop into exactly the type of cells that a physician may need for treating a disease. "We have discovered that proteins called transcription factors work together in a new and complex way to reprogram the DNA … Continue reading

Women not immune from snoring-stroke connection

Posted: Published on May 24th, 2014

Home > News > health-news New York, May 24 : It is not only men who are at risk of stroke linked to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). A study has found that the link between OSA and stroke may be just as strong among women too. Snoring is a cardinal feature of the OSA syndrome. Previous studies have attributed most significant risks of stroke and OSA links to male patients perhaps because men tend to develop OSA earlier than women. Women are just as susceptible as men when it comes to the vascular effects of OSA, the findings of the study showed. "Our results could have a substantial impact on our thinking of the risks associated with sleep apnea in women," said Suzie Bertisch, research faculty member at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in the US. From a clinical standpoint, the results could help clinicians provide more proactive treatment for reducing cardiovascular risk in their female OSA patients, she noted. For the study, the researchers re-examined the association between OSA and stroke using data from 5,442 participants. The researchers not surprisingly found a significant association between stroke risk and OSA. What was surprising was that they also found that the … Continue reading

Brain injury survivors need more local support

Published on May 23, 2014 Chava Finkler, the coordinator of programs and services for the Newfoundland and Labrador Brain Injury Association, listens to people at the local support group. Star photo by Cory Hurley Published on May 23, 2014 Ron Targett Star photo by Cory Hurley For more than three years, Ron Targett has been in darkness. The Massey Drive man who suffered a brain injury from a fall in December 2010 is far from alone. That darkness in Targetts case is blindness which is very common in people who suffer brain injuries but there is also a lot of unknown and loneliness when it comes to related support and services. That is also something Targett relates to. When a provincial brain injury association and a Corner Brook support group for such people are unaware the other exists, there is an obvious disconnect. The hope of both organizations is that will never be the case again. Continued here: Brain injury survivors need more local support … Continue reading

Complimentary Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Being Offered to Veterans & Active Duty Military with Traumatic Brain Injury …

Posted: Published on May 24th, 2014

Woodbury, NY (PRWEB) May 24, 2014 Hyperbaric Medical Solutions with state-of-the-art facilities in Woodbury and Medford, New York is proud to continue offering complimentary hyperbaric care to brain-injured veterans. The treatment, which involves a patient breathing 100% pure oxygen within a pressurized chamber helps super-oxygenate the plasma, accelerating healing. A growing number of veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are turning to HBOT because the traditional psychiatric medications they are usually given often do not heal the brain, have terrible side effects, and can produce suicidal thoughts. Each day some 22, or more, veterans take their own lives. HBOT has been shown to be so effective that the state of Oklahoma has just passed a law providing free HBOT to vets with TBI statewide. There are grassroots movements in Texas, Kentucky, Indiana and other states to follow Oklahomas lead. Hyperbaric Medical Solutions has been offering free HBOT for injured military veterans since its inception in 2011. Medical Director Dr. Henry Prince reports that nearly all of the brain-injured veterans treated at our facilities have experienced improvement. Dr. Princes own son, Jesse, a West Point grad, returned from Iraq with PTSD and was only able to return to his normal life … Continue reading
