Posted by cpilkinton Published: May 23, 2014 After 43 years of service to the Department of Biology and Eastern Washington University, Flash Gibson, PhD, will be retiring at the end of spring quarter 2014. Gibson earned his undergraduate degree from Eastern in 1966, followed by his masters and doctorate degrees in zoology from Oregon State University in 1969 and 1971. Gibson began teaching at EWU in 1971, and was promoted to full professor in 1985. He has taught a diversity of courses including invertebrate and vertebrate zoology, ecology, entomology, anatomy and physiology, environmental science and general biology. He has advised hundreds of biology students and has been the major professor for several graduate students. Gibson has worn several administrative hats during his years at Eastern. He served as chair of the Department of Biology from 1989 to 1993 and again from 2001 through 2009. He provided leadership to the university as vice provost for Undergraduate Affairs from 1993 to 2000. Posted: Published on May 24th, 2014

The top two Montgomery High School graduates credit a lot of their success to the support and encouragement of their families and teachers at Montgomery High. Valedictorian Catherine A. Dunaway, 18, said her parents, Marcus and Sharon, have encouraged her to achieve her personal best each day, and have been awesome and supportive of all her efforts. From her sister Madeleine, 20, a student at the University of North Texas, Dunaway said shes learned the power of organization and time management and always knows she has a friend to turn to. Salutatorian Vir S. Mehta, 18, has been inspired by his parents, Sanjay and Gurinder Mehta, to pursue a business career in hopes of one day becoming a professor of business just like them. They are both professors in the business school at Sam Houston State University. Mehtas grandfather was also a professor. My parents are probably the two people who have had the biggest impact on my high-school career, Mehta said. Mehtas sister, Tara, a sophomore at Montgomery High, is also at the top of her class. Posted: Published on May 24th, 2014

Editors note: This is the another in a series of profiles highlighting members of the Class of 2014 at area high schools. Eighteen-year-old Samantha Burns is quick to point out that almost no one calls her that she prefers to go by Sam. Im an engineer, I like efficiency, she jokes. Sam, a bioengineering enthusiast, has spent the past two years in a molecular biology lab alongside researchers at Florida Gulf Coast University on an antioxidant gene study. Burns began attending FGCU as a dual-enrollment student starting her junior year at Lely High School. Its been exciting being able to have a foot in both Lely and a foot in FGCU because Ive been able to represent Lely at a lot of FGCU events, she said. While not involved in daily life at Lely for the past two years, Sam was able to serve as a co-captain for the schools mock trial and moot court program, leading Lely to place as the top Collier County school this year. She was recently awarded as Best Witness for the Defense and Best Attorney for the Prosecution in the school district. I really loved Lely, Sam said. You definitely feel like theres this … Continue reading

[Video feature] Enabling India's Disabled

Posted: Published on May 24th, 2014

Disability isnt the problem, the lack of solutions that work for the disabled is, says Shanti Raghavan. Shantis brother, Hari, started losing his eyesight at the age of fifteen due to retinitis pigmentosa, a disease that gradually diminishes eyesight. During Haris visit to the US, where Shanti and her husband lived at the time, they collectively decided that if he couldnt see, that didnt mean he couldnt do. And so, they did: they attempted every kind of adventure sport and every ing, including swimming, kayaking and snorkeling. This is the summer that initiated Shanti and her husband, Dipesh, into the world of empowering people with disabilities. In this inspiring and rather motivating conversation on Chai wtih Lakshmi, Shanti shares about how her non-profit organisation Enable India is enabling thousands of people with disabilities, helping them contribute on par with the abled. The organisation works closely with corporates, the state government and with individuals to train and create employment for differently abled people. Any person with disability actually can do any job, if they have the right solution. I call it the workplace solution. For instance if you or I want to see at night we would use a torch, and … Continue reading
