Lee Memorial Health: Recognition swift effective stroke care

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2014

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. Stroke is a serious medical emergency that requires swift and appropriate treatment. In fact, a common phrase regarding stroke is time is brain, meaning that there are specific timeframes to receive treatment in order to speed recovery and reduce death and disability for stroke patients. Each Lee Memorial Health System hospital has worked diligently to incorporate up-to-date, research-based protocols to ensure the fastest and most effective treatment for stroke patients. We are proud that each Lee Memorial Health System hospital was recognized for successfully implementing the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines protocols. Our hospitals also earned the Get With The Guidelines- Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, which is the result of meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. Additionally, Lee Memorial Hospital, Cape Coral Hospital and Gulf Coast Medical Center received the associations Target: Stroke Honor Roll for meeting stroke quality measures that reduce the time between hospital arrival and treatment with the clot-buster tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. This treatment, … Continue reading

Women Must Think FAST To Reduce Unique Stroke Risks

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2014

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The differences between men and women can present some unique health risks, especially when it comes to women and their risk for stroke. Dr. Frisco Morse, DO, medical director of Stormont-Vail's Stroke Program, says 85 percent of strokes are related to a blood clot, where it breaks off, travels to the brain and lodges in an artery to the brain. Any brain tissue beyond the clot, he says, is then deprived of oxygen that's in the blood and is at risk of dying if blood flow is not restored. The risk of stroke increases with age, and women tend to live longer than men. Morse says age also brings a higher incidence of another risk factor for stroke, a disruption of the heart rhythm known as atrial fibrillation. Morse says women also face unique hormone issues. Hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptives can increase stroke risk, especially when combined with smoking. Morse says higher levels of certain hormones can make the blood clot more easily. He says that does not mean women should never be on HRT, but women should weigh the risks and benefits with their doctor, and not begin HRT under the old theory … Continue reading

Biogen Idec Receives Positive CHMP Opinion For Plegridy As Treatment For MS

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2014

By RTT News, May 23, 2014, 08:12:00 AM EDT (RTTNews.com) - Biogen Idec ( BIIB ) said Friday that it received a positive recommendation from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use or CHMP of the European Medicines Agency or EMA for the marketing authorization of Plegridy (peginterferon beta-1a), a pegylated interferon administered subcutaneously for adults with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis or RRMS. The CHMP's positive opinion is now referred to the European Commission (EC), which grants marketing authorization for medicines in the EU. Following the opinion adopted by the CHMP, a decision from the EC is expected within the coming months. Plegridy is an investigational subcutaneous injectable therapy for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, in which interferon beta-1a is pegylated to extend its half-life and prolong its exposure in the body. Plegridy is a member of the interferon class of treatments for MS. Clinical and MRI data from the ADVANCE study of PLEGRIDY demonstrated a reduction in relapses, disability progression and the number of MS lesions when compared to placebo, and further support its clinical efficacy profile. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord and … Continue reading

New insight into stem cell development

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2014

May 22, 2014 The world has great expectations that stem cell research one day will revolutionize medicine. But in order to exploit the potential of stem cells, we need to understand how their development is regulated. Now researchers from University of Southern Denmark offer new insight. Stem cells are cells that are able to develop into different specialized cell types with specific functions in the body. In adult humans these cells play an important role in tissue regeneration. The potential to act as repair cells can be exploited for disease control of e.g. Parkinson's or diabetes, which are diseases caused by the death of specialized cells. By manipulating the stem cells, they can be directed to develop into various specialized cell types. This however, requires knowledge of the processes that regulate their development. Now Danish researchers from University of Southern Denmark report a new discovery that provides valuable insight into basic mechanisms of stem cell differentiation. The discovery could lead to new ways of making stem cells develop into exactly the type of cells that a physician may need for treating a disease. "We have discovered that proteins called transcription factors work together in a new and complex way to … Continue reading

Cholesterol plays key role in cell migration, study shows

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2014

University of Barcelona's researchers led by Professor Carles Enrich, from the Department of Cell Biology, Immunology and Neurosciences of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Barcelona (UB) and CELLEX Biomedical Research Centre of IDIBAPS, have found that cholesterol plays a key role in cell mobility and tissue invasion. The results of the study prove that the accumulation of LDL cholesterol cells -- the one carried by low-density lipoproteins -- may play a crucial role in promoting cell mobility. On the contrary, high levels of HDL cholesterol -- the one carried by high-density lipoproteins -- may avoid cell propagation. This is a key study to better understand cancer metastasis, the process in which cancer cells invade healthy tissues, and foster the discussion on the relationship between cholesterol levels and cancer incidence. Daniel Grinberg and Llusa Vilageliu, from the Department of Genetics of the Faculty of Biology, and Joan Blasi, from the Department of Pathology and Experimental Therapy of the Faculty of Medicine, participated in the paper, published on the journal Cell Reports. Researchers from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, the University of Sidney (Australia), Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane, Australia) and the University of Hamburg (Germany) also collaborated … Continue reading
