Stem cell research on campus grows after $3M boost

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2014

Provided Aparna Mahadevan, left, a graduate student in Natasza Kurpios' lab, discusses a research poster with Vimal Selvaraj, assistant professor in animal science, at the daylong Stem Cell Retreat May 17 on campus. Unlocking knowledge about how organisms develop and repair, stem cell research holds great promise for future therapies for injuries and conditions, from infertility and Alzheimers to heart failure and cancer. As part of its mission to promote cross-campus interactions and enhance training in stem cell biology at Cornell, the Cornell Stem Cell Program (CSCP) held its second Stem Cell Retreat May 17 on campus. About 85 members of the Cornell stem cell research community attended the event, which featured keynote speaker Dr. Lawrence Goldstein, director of the Stem Cell Program at University of California, San Diego, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, speaking on using stem cells to treat Alzheimers disease. Stem cell research involves a wide breadth of disciplines, said Dr. Alexander Nikitin, professor of pathology at Cornells College of Veterinary Medicine and leader of CSCP. This retreat is one example of how weve been able to foster the communications and collaborations across fields necessary to more fully understand and harness the potential of stem cells. … Continue reading

Stem Cell Therapy Provided by Pend Oreille Veterinary Service Helps Local Leonberger Get the Bounce Back in His Step …

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2014

Poway, California (PRWEB) May 22, 2014 Zeke was in pain from arthritis caused by an old injury and was facing possible surgery on both knees. Christine Ponsness-Wetzel, DVM, at Pend Oreille Veterinary Service determined that Zeke was a good candidate for stem cell therapy by Vet-Stem, Inc. as an alternative, and just a few months later, he now has a bounce back in his step. Zeke is a 125-pound Leonberger who lives in Idaho and enjoys going on back country ski trips. Zekes hobbies came to a halt two years ago when he was diagnosed with a partial cruciate ligament tear. He had gone lame and two weeks of rest was recommended, but his owners did not see improvement. After a month of rest, x-rays revealed arthritis had developed in one of Zekes knees. After a year of pain medications to control the discomfort and pain, Zeke started having more difficulties. He had a delayed ability to comfortably bend his leg, often needed help getting up from a laying position, and would whimper in pain. This time, x-rays would reveal arthritis in both knees. After a few months of increased pain medications and only mild improvement, Zekes owners opted for … Continue reading

A family at last thanks to pioneering fertility treatment

Posted: Published on May 22nd, 2014

Innovative fertility treatment using egg yolks has helped a couple become parents after nine years of heartache. Lucy and Liam Phasey, from North Wales, had four rounds of conventional IVF treatment through the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust and suffered the pain of miscarriage. But now, thanks to a pioneering treatment at in Manchester, they are proud parents to 14-week-old Evie. Mrs Phasey, 27, was told in 2007 that she would never conceive naturally because of a rare condition which meant her immune system was fighting the embryo cells. They went through four attempts, between October 2009 and April 2012, on the NHS, but each failed, and despite scrimping and saving they were unable to afford any more. The pair then stumbled across CARE, an infertility treatment centre in Manchester, where a doctor told them Mrs Phaseys immune system was too strong, killing off embryos because it thought they were a foreign body. The 27-year-old was given intravenous intralipid therapy, a treatment administered through an IV drip and made from soya bean oil, egg yolk, glycerin and water. The therapy stimulates the immune system to suppress so-called 'natural killer cells' and allow an embryo to implant in the womb. … Continue reading

Court decision keeps NZ GE-free

Posted: Published on May 22nd, 2014

Court decision keeps NZ GE-free A recent High Court decision is a victory for New Zealand consumers, farmers and foresters, says the Soil & Health Association. The High Court ruled against a decision by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) that two new plant breeding techniques were not genetic engineering techniques. Soil & Health welcomes the court ruling. Without it New Zealand would have lost its status and international reputation as a producer of GE-free food and fibre. If the EPAs decision had not been challenged and found wanting, plants bred using these GE techniques could have been planted in New Zealand without any public consultation or monitoring of their effects, said Marion Thomson, co-chair of Soil & Health. There are other new techniques like this, and they must all be thoroughly and independently scrutinised and the precautionary principle applied. Otherwise, its an uncontrolled experiment that could have adverse effects for people, animals and the environment. The High Court ruled that the EPA had misinterpreted the law and that it had failed to apply the precautionary principle. Soil & Health is concerned about the ability of the EPA to protect our environment, says Thomson. We commend the Sustainability Council for challenging … Continue reading

Gene therapy hits blood cancers hard

Posted: Published on May 22nd, 2014

In one of the biggest advances against leukemia and other blood cancers in many years, doctors are reporting unprecedented success by using gene therapy to transform patients blood cells into soldiers that seek and destroy cancer. A few patients with one type of leukemia were given this one-time, experimental therapy several years ago, and some remain cancer-free today. Now, at least six research groups have treated more than 120 patients with many types of blood and bone marrow cancers, with stunning results. Its really exciting, said Dr. Janis Abkowitz, blood diseases chief at the University of Washington in Seattle and president of the American Society of Hematology. You can take a cell that belongs to a patient and engineer it to be an attack cell. In one study, all five adults and 19 of 22 children with acute lymphocytic leukemia, commonly known as ALL, had a complete remission, meaning no cancer could be found after treatment, although a few have relapsed since then. These were gravely ill patients out of options. Some had tried multiple bone marrow transplants and up to 10 types of chemotherapy or other treatments. Cancer was so advanced in Emily Whitehead, now 8, of Philipsburg, Pa., … Continue reading
